NUMBER ONE GETS KNOCKED OFF – Division Two’s PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS hosted the top ranked team in the nation – the defending National Champion NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS. Not only did the Gorillas defeat the Bearcats 20-10, but this loss ended NW Missouri State’s THIRTY-EIGHT game winning streak. Pitt State led 17-7 at Halftime and stayed on top from there to the delight of the crowd at The Jungle.
EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE – Meanwhile in the NAIA the Top Three teams rolled to victory: The (1) UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS dismembered the LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY AT BELLEVILLE LYNX 70-0 ### The (2) BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS handed a 49-0 loss to the CENTRAL METHODIST EAGLES ### And the (3) REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES (Should be the Rottweilers) hammered the homestanding PIKEVILLE BEARS 44-21.
HILLSDALE STRONG – The storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS (whose own THIRTY-FOUR game winning streak was just recently topped by NW Missouri) took it on the road yesterday to Philippi, WV to take on the ALDERSON BROADDUS UNIVERSITY BATTLERS. The spectators got treated to an Instant Classic, with the Chargers prevailing by a final score of 37-31.
HAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The (23) ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM notched a FIFTY-SIX to NOTHING victory over the TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS ### Meanwhile the SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS clobbered the BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS 35-7 ### And the (21) MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS won a 27-21 thriller against the SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY SAINTS.
THE BATTLE OF SIOUX FALLS – A terrific battle between cross-city rivals was on the slate in this game. The 13th ranked UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS welcomed the AUGUSTANA COLLEGE VIKINGS to see who owned their fair city in 2017. When all the dust had settled the Cougars emerged with a 21-14 triumph after a true Game for the Ages.
WHEN RANKED TEAMS CLASH – The (15) DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS crashed Senior Day for the (25) DAKOTA STATE TROJANS, slipping past them in a 28-25 epic ### And the (9) GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS traveled to face the (20) CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS for a true catfight. It took DOUBLE OVERTIME, but Georgetown College returned home with a 31-24 win.
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – As it happened to turn out this week there was only one upset in the NAIA rankings. That upset happened in the game between the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS and the home-standing MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS, the number 11 team in the nation. This nailbiter ended in a 30-27 road win for the Battlin’ Bears.
HOW ‘BOUT THEM JIMMIES? – The UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES have been suffering through a very disappointing season so far in 2017. Yesterday provided another rare victory this year as the Jimmies found themselves on the road against their conference rivals the MAYVILLE STATE COMETS. The University of Jamestown went back home with a 27-14 victory.
RANKED TEAMS IN CLOSE CALLS – The (10) SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS visited the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS and snuck past them by a final score of 30-28 ### And the (24) DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS logged a 13-7 road victory over the HASTINGS COLLEGE BRONCOS on Military Appreciation Day.
TRUNK OR TREAT – This was the name of a fun Youth Sports Day program run by the SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES. Yesterday the Fighting Bees (love that name) tangled with the visiting ROBERT MORRIS (IL) UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Wind Eagles). Saint Ambrose University won the game by a final tally of 35-29.
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTH MEETING – Yesterday marked the 107th – yes, the one hundred and seventh – gridiron clash between the KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES and their hosts, the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES. The Coyotes marked the occasion by doubling up on the Swedes for a 56-28 victory.
HEART OF AMERICA ATHLETIC CONFERENCE GAME OF THE WEEK – This time around the HAAC’s Game of the Week aka Heart Game of the Week pitted the number 12 BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS against the home-standing WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN. The Ravens won this battle in front of a nationwide audience. The final score was Benedictine College 42 Statesmen 29.
