COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 23rd

*** HEADLINES ***

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – In NCAA Division Two the number 15 ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES hosted the 2nd ranked FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS. The defense for the Eagles was nearly perfect in this game which sent a rupture through the D2 rankings. When all was said and done Ashland University had defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 20-3.

CUMBERLAND NEARLY CONQUERS DIVISION ONE – Yesterday the NAIA’s CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY PHOENIX came tantalizingly close to being the latest NAIA team to topple an NCAA Division ONE program. The Phoenix were on the road against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose and saw a 7-7 1st Quarter tie become a 17-7 Halftime lead for the Blue Hose. The 3rd Quarter ended in a 20-20 deadlock but Presbyterian College slipped by Cumberland U in the 4th, 27-20.  

TOP TEN TANGLE – In NCAA Division Three the number 10 team in the nation – the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS TOMMIES – did battle with the 6th ranked SAINT JOHN’S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES. The largest crowd in D3 history watched as the Tommies led the Johnnies 7-3 in the 1st Quarter and 17-10 at the Half. From there the University of Saint Thomas held on for a thrilling 20-17 victory.NAIA VS NCAA DIVISION THREE – Balladeer’s Blog chronicles the gridiron rivalry between the NCAA D3 and the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Yesterday was all NAIA as the ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM logged a 56-38 road win over D3’s WHITTIER COLLEGE POETS   ###    And the NAIA’s VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS picked up a Forfeit W from the FINLANDIA UNIVERSITY LIONS.  *** The NAIA has won 2 weeks, D3 has won 1 and 2 have been ties. 

NCCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – In the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) the WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS welcomed the CINCINATTI CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EAGLES. The Royals were on top 14-7 to end the 1st Quarter and made that a 21-7 advantage by the midpoint. From there Warner University shut out the Eagles while adding 7 points for a 28-7 rout.

EIGHTY-THREE – In D2 football the AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS crossed over into Canada to play the SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN (as in Scottish Clan). The Cougars thoroughly dominated the Clan on both sides of the ball as they showed them how it’s done AND showed them no mercy. Azusa Pacific won th game EIGHTY-THREE to SEVEN. 

USCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – The defending National Champions of USCAA football – the DEAN COLLEGE BULLDOGS – took the field against NCAA Division Three’s BECKER COLLEGE HAWKS. A pair of Safeties in the 2nd Quarter gave the Bulldogs an odd 11-3 lead at the break. In the 2nd Half Dean College outscored the Hawks 14-7 for a 25-10 triumph.  

*** MORE NAIA ***

DOWN GOES NUMBER SEVEN – The CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS played host to the number 7 team in the nation – the DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS. The Bulldogs started out trailing the Tigers 13-0 in the 1st Quarter but by the break that deficit was cut to 16-14. Concordia U added 15 more points from there while giving up nothing but a Safety to Doan College. The final score was Bulldogs 29  Tigers 18.

OTHER UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The only other Top 25 upset in the NAIA yesterday came in the game between the PERU STATE BOBCATS and their guests the (22) MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS. The Bobcats held a 10-3 Halftime lead and that became a 24-10 advantage in the 3rd and ultimately a 31-24 victory for Peru State.

WHEN RANKED TEAMS CLASH – The (5) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS crushed the (23) EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS 62-14    ###    Meanwhile the (6) LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS defeated the visiting (10) SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FIRE   ###    And the (18) STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS edged the (24) KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES 26-23 in their own house.  

YOUTH DAY IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG – The (17) TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS took it on the road against the OTTAWA UNIVERSITY BRAVES, who were celebrating Youth Day. The Blue Jays marked the occasion by delivering an old-fashioned spanking to the Braves to the tune of 41-10.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES won a 26-19 Battle Royal against their guests the WALDORF COLLEGE WARRIORS   ###    Meanwhile the GRACELAND UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS defeated the CENTRAL METHODIST UNIVERSITY EAGLES 39-32   ###    And the MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS eked out a 33-28 road win over the DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS.  

HAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES (formerly the Avalanche) welcomed the CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS and defeated them in a 31-23 thriller    ###    And the (8) GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS marked Homecoming with a 37-24 win over the MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS.

ROAD CLASSIC – The BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES traveled to face the BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS in this game. The Threshers charged out to a 13-2 lead which the Swedes countered with a 16-13 advantage of their own. Bethel College went back on top 20-16 as the drama continued. By Halftime Bethany College had retaken the lead 30-20. From there the Threshers were chasing the Swedes the rest of the way as the visitors won it 37-33.

BLOWOUTS – The SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS hosted the MCPHERSON COLLEGE BULLDOGS (should be the Mastiffs) and proceeded to dismember them by a score of 45-17   ###    The (20) DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS slapped down the home-standing MAYVILLE STATE COMETS 52-7   ###    And the (19) NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS dealt a 63-26 body-slam to their hosts the BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS.

MORE UPSETS IN THE TOP FIFTEEN – The UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS visited the (7) UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA LIONS and shocked them 38-17   ###    The (25) UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES likewise pulled off a road upset, in their case a 37-31 thriller over the (10) EMPORIA STATE HORNETS   ###    And the BENTLEY UNIVERSITY FALCONS toppled the (13) LONG ISLAND-POST PIONEERS 40-21.

OIL TOPS GOLD – The UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY OILERS were less than gracious hosts to the TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY GOLDEN TIGERS. The Oilers shoved and kicked the hapless – and forever overrated – Golden Tigers all over the field. When all of the dust had finally settled the University of Findlay emerged with a SIXTY-ONE to NOTHING victory.

WORKIN’ OVERTIME – The FORT VALLEY STATE WILDCATS needed an OT session to defeat the BENEDICT COLLEGE TIGERS by a count of 31-28   ###    Overtime saw the VIRGINIA STATE TROJANS overcome the visiting WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS 33-27   ###    And the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AT DULUTH BULLDOGS logged a 34-31 OT road win over the WAYNE STATE WARRIORS.  

CIRCLE CITY CLASSIC – This game pitted the KENTUCKY STATE THOROBREDS against the home-standing CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS in a battle of cool-named teams. A 6-0 1st Quarter lead for the Thorobreds turned into a 20-10 advantage by Halftime. After the break Kentucky State kept the hard-fighting Marauders at arm’s length for a 34-22 victory.  

ONE POINT WONDERS – The BLACK HILLS STATE YELLOW JACKETS clashed with the visiting SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS and beat them 25-24   ###    And the UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN CHARGERS eked out a 21-20 triumph over their guests the PACE UNIVERSITY SETTERS (as in Irish Setters).
