MORNINGSIDE CONQUERS THE NCAA – Each week of college football season often sees various NAIA college teams upsetting NCAA Division Two teams. This is like when 1AA teams upset 1A teams. Yesterday the NAIA’s MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS faced the NCAA’s Division Two team the TRUMAN STATE BULLDOGS. The Mustangs held a commanding 28-10 Halftime lead but needed to hold on for a 35-30 victory.
NUMBER FOUR TAKES A FALL – Meanwhile in NCAA Division Three the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT STOUT BLUE DEVILS welcomed the number 4 team in the nation – the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS TOMMIES. A 7-6 1st Quarter lead for the Tommies became a 14-14 tie at the Half. After the break the Blue Devils outscored UST 11-8 for an earth-shaking 25-22 upset.
NUMBER SEVEN GOES DOWN – In NCAA Division Two the WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES played host to the nation’s 7th ranked COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES. The Buffaloes were trailing the Thunder Wolves 7-3 in the 1st Quarter and 21-11 at the midpoint. Neither team scored in the 3rd Quarter, with the Buffaloes notching 13 points in the 4th to win the game 24-21.
KNEWBIE KNIGHTS WITH A WIN – The brand-new NAIA football team the SAINT ANDREWS UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS were on the road the first two games of the season. Yesterday was their first-ever home game and the Knights made history against the CINCINNATI CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EAGLES. Saint Andrews University was all over the Eagles, routing them by an impressive score of FORTY-EIGHT to TWENTY-FIVE!
CATAWBA CONQUERS DIVISION ONE – D2’s CATAWBA COLLEGE INDIANS visited the NCAA Division One VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE KEYDETS. The Indians had fallen behind by a score of 10-0 come Halftime but made it a 10-7 game by the end of the 3rd Quarter. Next Catawba exploded for 20 points in the 4th for a 27-20 upset of the Keydets.

NAIA OVER NCAA D3 – Balladeer’s Blog always chronicles the gridiron rivalry between the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and NCAA Division Three. This week the only NAIA win came from the MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS, who defeated their guests the NORTH PARK UNIVERSITY VIKINGS by a count of 24-14.
D3 OVER NAIA – The MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS won at the 1st Year TEXAS WESLEYAN RAMS by a score of 29-13 ### The (8) ST JOHN’S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES demolished the visiting PRESENTATION COLLEGE SAINTS 49-14 ### The (10) HARDIN SIMMONS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS annihilated the hapless TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS in a 74-0 laugher ### And the EAST TEXAS BAPTIST TIGERS trounced the SAGU LIONS 59-17.

EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE – The top 3 teams in the rankings all won yesterday. The top-ranked Defending National Champions – the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS logged a 68-23 beatdown of the ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS ### Meanwhile the number 2 BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS logged a 67-7 road blowout of the CULVER-STOCKTON WILDCATS ### And the 3rd ranked REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES defeated their hosts the FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES 54-31.
GETTING A JUMP ON THE WEEKEND – Friday night the CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY PHOENIX welcomed the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WARRIORS. The Phoenix were firing on all cylinders for the first time this season and it showed. By the time all was said and done they had notched a 38-24 triumph over the Warriors.
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The only upset in the NAIA rankings this week came in the game pitting the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS against the number 23 WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN. The Pioneers laid a hurting on the Statesmen in their own house, clobbering them by a final tally of 31-12.
MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT – The BLUEFIELD COLLEGE RAMBLING RAMS honored the United States Military at last night’s game against the visiting EDWARD WATERS COLLEGE TIGERS. The Rambling Rams won it 19-0. ### Meanwhile the HASTINGS COLLEGE BRONCOS, alma mater of THE Tom Osborne, likewise held Military Appreciation Night and crushed the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS 47-9.
FARMER’S BOWL – The 14th ranked STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS traveled to face the MAYVILLE STATE COMETS in the 2017 Farmer’s Bowl. The Warriors were on top of the Comets 9-6 to end the 1st Quarter, then grabbed a 23-12 advantage by Halftime. In the 4th Quarter Sterling College had to withstand a furious rally by Mayville State to emerge with a tight 44-40 triumph.
BLOWOUTS – The UNION (KY) BULLDOGS took it on the road against the KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS and tore them apart to the tune of 43-14 ### The (12) MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS hosted the GRACELAND UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS and sent them home reeling from a 45-13 beatdown ### And the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS smacked the DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS 37-3 in their own house.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS battled the visiting PERU STATE BOBCATS and defeated them in a 21-19 nailbiter ### Meanwhile the UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS eked out a 20-19 win over the home-standing BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS ### And the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS notched a 20-11 road win over the SIENNA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY SAINTS.
ROAD WARRIORS – The ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS found themselves in Helena facing the CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS. The Battlin’ Bears obliterated CC 40-14. ### And the BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS ruined the home opener for the AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES (formerly the Avalanche) with a 72-14 ravishing.

UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY – The HUMBOLDT STATE LUMBERJACKS stunned the (13) AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS 30-19 in their own house ### The BOWIE STATE BULLDOGS logged a 31-13 road upset of the (18) WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS ### And the SLIPPERY ROCK ROCKETS toppled the (20) WEST CHESTER GOLDEN RAMS 49-42.
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS (love that name) took it on the road against the (23) HENDERSON STATE REDDIES and crushed them by a score of 26-3 ### And the ALBANY (GA) STATE GOLDEN RAMS handed their hosts the (25) TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY GOLDEN TIGERS a 20-7 loss.
STORM FRONT – The SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM got off the schneid for 2017 yesterday by winning a 33-30 Instant Classic against the home-standing EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY TIGERS. ### And the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM edged the visiting OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON by a score of 21-17.
WORKIN’ OVERTIME – The LIMESTONE COLLEGE SAINTS were at home against the BENEDICT COLLEGE TIGERS. After a scoreless opening Quarter the two teams were knotted up at 7-7 by Halftime. Neither team scored in the 3rd Quarter but were deadlocked again 14-14 to end the 4th. The Saints shut out the Tigers in the Overtime session then scored a Touchdown to win the game 20-14.
ALL-NAME GAMES – The UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS traveled to take on the NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE RANGERS. The Boll Weevils prevailed in a 37-35 game for the ages. ### And the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS routed the DIXIE STATE RED STORM by a score of 35-14.
BATTLE OF THE LINCOLNS – This game pitted the LINCOLN (MO) UNIVERSITY BLUE TIGERS against the LINCOLN (PA) UNIVERSITY LIONS. The Blue Tigers charged out to a 14-0 lead in the 1st Quarter but the Lions fought back to make it a 21-13 game by the Half. That became a 26-13 advantage for Lincoln (MO) to end the 3rd Quarter. A 23 point 4th Quarter sealed a 49-19 triumph for the Blue Tigers.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS took the field against the visiting UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (sic). The Gorillas emerged with a nailbiting 31-28 victory. ### And the SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE OWLS managed a 31-27 road win over the STONEHILL COLLEGE SKYHAWKS.
EAST MEETS WEST – The EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS visited the WESTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS in this game. The Greyhounds held a 14-7 lead in the 1st Quarter but the Mustangs pulled to within 17-14 by the break. From there Western New Mexico went on top 27-24 to end the 3rd Quarter but Eastern New Mexico came from behind in the 4th for a 37-34 victory.
