Balladeer’s Blog continues its coverage of the world’s OLDEST team sport – Polo. The 2016 Monty Waterbury Cup has wrapped up at the Greenwich Polo Club.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The storied WHITE BIRCH Polo Team took on GOOSE CREEK – Official Balladeer’s Blog Name – the VIRGINIANS – for the 2016 title. In the First Chukker White Birch started the scoring with a goal from Hilario Ulloa but Goose Creek came charging from behind to take a 3-1 lead.
Chukker Number Two saw the Virginians outscore the team from Connecticut 2 goals to 1 for a 5-2 advantage. In the Third Chukker White Birch exploded for 4 goals – 3 from Ulloa and 1 from Mariano Aguerre – while Goose Creek could muster just 1. Both teams went into Halftime tied up 6-6.
After the Halftime break Chukker Number Four got rolling and became a masterpiece of defensive play with neither team able to notch a goal. In the Fifth Chukker White Birch and the Virginians exchanged a pair of goals each to end the period with an 8-8 tie.
The Sixth and final Chukker started with Goose Creek taking a 9-8 edge with a goal from Mariano Gonzalez. Ulloa managed to swat in a goal for a 9-9 tie then put White Birch on top 10-9 with less than two minutes left to play! Santino Magrini snuck in another score for the pride of the Hamptons before time expired.
The 11-9 triumph marked the third Waterbury Cup Championship in a row for White Birch. Combined with their crowns in 2003 and 2011 they have now notched FIVE Monty Waterbury Cups. This ties them with the Gone-Away Farms Smallwooders. Hilario Ulloa led all scorers in the game with 8 goals.
