URSINUS RULES THE WORLD … KIND OF – The URSINUS COLLEGE BEARS from D3 were on the road against D2’s MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY MARAUDERS. After 4 embarrassing Quarters of football Regulation ended in a ZERO to ZERO tie. Multiple Field Goals and Overtime sessions later things stood at 9-9. At long last the Bears got a Touchdown and followed up with the 2-point conversion while shutting out the Marauders. Ursinus won this very odd game by a score of 17-9.
CUMBERLANDS COMES CLOSE – The NAIA’s UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS came close to toppling D2’s CARSON-NEWMAN UNIVERSITY EAGLES. These two teams engaged in a textbook case of a shootout, with the homestanding Eagles holding on in the end for a tight three-point victory. The final score in this gridiron clash was Eagles 59 Patriots 56.
BATTLE IN THE TOP TEN – In Division Two the top ranked MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS hosted the number 7 UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AT DULUTH BULLDOGS on Thursday night. This game lived up to all the hype, thankfully, and was an undeniable Instant Classic. After 4 spellbinding Quarters of football the Mavericks wound up notching the win by a final tally of 20-17.
* NCAA DIVISION TWO *
UPSET IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – Thursday’s and Friday’s games saw just one upset of a ranked team in D2. The number 24 WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS were on the road against the unranked UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT PEMBROKE BRAVES. The Braves showed they were more than up to the challenge and, with their fans cheering them on, they brought down the Rams 17-7.
WHEN TOP TWENTY-FIVE TEAMS CLASH – Thursday night saw the number 9 team in the nation – the LENOIR-RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS – traveled to face the 22nd ranked WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY GOLDEN RAMS. The Bears had control of the game most of the way and compiled a 41-7 lead after 3 Quarters of play. The Golden Rams came alive in the 4th Quarter but it was too little too late and Lenoir-Rhyne University went back home boasting a 41-28 triumph.
RANKED TEAMS ROLLING – The (5) OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY PANTHERS crushed the MALONE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS 59-21 in their own house ### Meanwhile the (6) PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS took it on the road and tore apart the NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS to the tune of 38-14 ### And the (11) DELTA STATE STATESMEN clobbered the visiting FORT VALLEY STATE WILDCATS 46-7.
ONE POINT WONDERS – The SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE MUSTANGS eked out a 21-20 road win at the MINOT STATE BEAVERS ### The LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY AT CW POST PIONEERS snuck past the homestanding EAST STROUDSBURG WARRIORS by a score of 41-40 ### And the FORT HAYS STATE TIGERS won a 30-29 affair while visiting the UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (their spelling).
ROAD ROUTS – The SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE PUMAS traveled to face the EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FIGHTING SCOTS and tripled-up on them 30-10 ### Meanwhile the WEST VIRGINIA STATE YELLOW JACKETS clobbered the homestanding FAIRMONT STATE FALCONS ### And the ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES clawed apart the LAKE ERIE COLLEGE STORM by a final tally of 56-22.
SHOW-ME STATE SHOWDOWN – The 20th ranked UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES played host to the MISSOURI- WESTERN GRIFFONS. As usual when these two MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association teams get together the hits were hard and the margin of victory was razor-thin. In the end the Mules emerged with a 20-19 victory.
DRAGONS TRIUMPHANT – The MINNESOTA STATE AT MOORHEAD DRAGONS battled the visiting WINONA STATE WARRIORS. The Dragons dominated the Warriors for a win by the authoritative margin of 42-17 ### And the TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGONS smacked around their guests the WALSH UNIVERSITY CAVALIERS by a score of 34-13.
ALL-NAME GAMES – The HENDERSON STATE REDDIES found themselves on the road against the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM, whom they defeated in a 23-16 Instant Classic. ### And the ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS absolutely eviscerated the SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM to the tune of 62-14.
SHUTOUTS – D2 saw only one instance of defensive perfection Thursday evening. The number 8 team in the nation – the storied NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS – were on the road against the UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT KEARNEY LOPERS. The Bearcats kept the Lopers scoreless and won the game THIRTY-ONE to NOTHING.
GO GREYHOUNDS – The UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS welcomed the SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS and sent them home nursing a 27-17 loss. ### And the EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS won a home stand of their own against the NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS. The final score in this manhandling was Greyhounds 40 Cowboys 10.
ROAD WARRIORS – The NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE RANGERS took a trip to do battle with the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS. The Rangers won by 21, downing the Boll Weevils 52-31. ### The (23) AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS meanwhile won a much closer 27-24 encounter with the WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES ### And the CHADRON STATE EAGLES defeated the MISSOURI S&T MINERS 40-27 in their own house.
LION-HEARTED – The LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY LIONS hosted the WASHBURN UNIVERSITY ICHABODS in a game for the ages. The Lions won this gridiron Armageddon by a score of 20-14. ### And another leonine team – the 21st- ranked TEXAS A&M AT COMMERCE LIONS – absolutely eviscerated their guests the ADAMS STATE GRIZZLIES to the tune of FORTY- EIGHT to SEVENTEEN!
INSTANT CLASSICS – The MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES wound up winning a 20-15 thriller against the visiting WAYNE STATE (MI) WARRIORS. ### Meanwhile the (18) OUACHITA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY TIGERS won a 31-24 road game against their namesake team the EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY TIGERS. ### And the (25) GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS survived a 36-28 visit from the SOUTHWEST BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BEARCATS.
* NCAA DIVISION THREE *
ROYALS ON THE ROAD – The 20th ranked BETHEL (MN) ROYALS were in Menomonie, WI to do battle with the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT STOUT BLUE DEVILS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 14-7 lead for the Royals by Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended with the Blue Devils having pulled to within 14-13 but in the 4th Bethel exploded for 21 more points to the 7 put up by UW-Stout. The Royals won by a count of 35-20. Bethel QB Andrew Dzurik went 21 of 27 for 270 yards and 4 Touchdowns.
KICKING LIKE A MULE – At number 25 the MUHLENBERG COLLEGE MULES made the visiting WILKES UNIVERSITY COLONELS their prison brides on Friday night. The Mules built on a 6-0 1st Quarter lead, making it 12-7 by the Half. Muhlenberg shut out the Colonels in the 2nd Half while adding 23 more points of their own in this 35-7 spanking. Mules Quarterback Nick Palladino showed his versatility, throwing for 189 yards and 2 TD’s while running for 109 yards and another TD.
NIGHTTIME IN NEW LONDON – The UNITED STATES COAST GUARD ACADEMY BEARS welcomed the ANNA MARIA COLLEGE AMCATS to New London, CT for this gridiron encounter. The Amcats were never truly in this game and trailed the Bears 20-3 by Halftime. The Coast Guard Academy added 14 in the 3rd Quarter while Anna Maria College could only muster another Field Goal in the 4th. The final score was Bears 34 Amcats 6. Coast Guard Running Back Mike Clancy rushed for 106 yards and 2 Touchdowns.
INSTANT CLASSICS – The FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE DIPLOMATS logged a thrilling 42-35 road victory at the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN. QB Matt Magarity had 4 Touchdowns through the air. ### Meanwhile the ALBRIGHT COLLEGE LIONS eked out a 24-23 win against the SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEA GULLS ### And the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT LACROSSE EAGLES defeated the LUTHER COLLEGE NORSE in a 26-19 nailbiter.
ENGINEER ON ENGINEER VIOLENCE – The MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERS were on the road against the WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS. Worcester led 14-0 to end the opening Quarter but by Halftime MIT had fought back to trail by just 28-21. The score stood at 28-28 to start the 4th Quarter before WPI won the game 31-28. Worcester Quarterback Dan Eckler passed for 197 yards and 2 Touchdowns.
BUTTKICKINGS – The MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS played host to the BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY BLAZERS and lambasted them to the tune of 52-23. Quarterback Ty Proctor threw for 3 TD’s. ### Meanwhile the BRIDGEWATER STATE BEARS smacked around the CURRY COLLEGE COLONELS 44-21 ### And the UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AT DARTMOUTH CORSAIRS keelhauled the MOUNT IDA COLLEGE MUSTANGS by a score of FORTY-ONE to SIX!
ROAD WARRIORS – The GETTYSBURG COLLEGE BULLETS perforated the BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE EAGLES by a score of FORTY-NINE to TEN in their own house. Bullets QB had 3 Touchdowns on 104 yds by air and 183 yds on the ground. ### The WESTFIELD STATE OWLS won a 44-21 beatdown at the NICHOLS COLLEGE BISON ### And the STEVENSON UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS defeated the homestanding NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN BATTLING BISHOPS in a 20-9 affair.
A GENERAL BLOWOUT – The WASHINGTON & LEE UNIVERSITY GENERALS welcomed the AVERETT UNIVERSITY COUGARS on Friday night. The game was all-Generals all the time as Washington & Lee led 35-14 by Halftime on their way to a 63-35 triumph. Every Touchdown for the Generals came on the ground as SEVEN different players combined for those 9 scores.
