On August 23rd the divisions of college football covered here at Balladeer’s Blog will kick off. To help all of us endure the time until the season starts I’ve been presenting looks at the coolest football helmets from each of the divisions covered here. Now it’s Division Two’s turn.
20. SOUTHERN ARKANSAS UNIVERSITY MULERIDERS
Location: Magnolia, AR
Conference: Great American Conference
Comment: Coach Tommy Tuberville played his college ball for the Muleriders, a team with acatchy nickname, cool helmets and a quintessentially southern sounding home city.
19. DELTA STATE STATESMEN
Location: Cleveland, MS
Conference: Gulf South Conference
Comment: Okay, so it’s just the Greek letter Delta and the word State. I still think it’s a clever and concise helmet logo that’s very eye-catching.
18. NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY TIMBERWOLVES
Location: Midland, MI
Conference: Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Comment: Carolina-blue shells with a big, bold Timberwolf pawprint on the side. How can you not love great helmets like this.
17. UNC-PEMBROKE BRAVES
Location: Pembroke, NC
Conference: Independent
Comment: The Braves are known for their gridiron toughness and they’re helping to keep independent play alive in this conference- crazed time period we live in.
16. UPPER IOWA PEACOCKS
Location: Fayette, IA
Conference: Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
Comment: The conjoined “U” and “I” on this helmet look incredibly stylish and the name Peacocks is almost unique in the various divisions of college sports.
15. CALIFORNIA (PA) VULCANS
Location: California, PA
Conference: Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Comment: Direct from the Keystone State, it’s the Vulcans! That’s the Roman fire and forge god Vulcan swinging his hammer in the helmet pic.
14. HUMBOLDT STATE LUMBERJACKS
Location: Arcata, CA
Conference: Great Northwest Athletic Conference
Comment: The Humboldt State University Lumberjacks have completed the Balladeer’s Blog Hat Trick: they have a cool nickname, cool helmets AND they play in the infinitely cool stadium the Redwood Bowl.
13. WEST LIBERTY HILLTOPPERS
Location: West Liberty, WV
Conference: West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Comment: This team from West Liberty boasts the coolest helmets out of all the college teams that go by the name Hilltoppers.
12. SAINT ANSELM HAWKS
Location: Manchester, NH
Conference: Northeast Ten Conference
Comment: Saint Anselm is famous not only for its impressive academic reputation but also for this avant garde football helmet design.
11. ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS
Location: Russellville, AR
Conference: Great American Conference
Comment: Wonderboys radio broadcasts are great to listen to via internet on Saturday nights in the fall for some real Old School southern football charm.
