COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RESULTS FROM FEBRUARY 26th

Cardinal Stritch Wolves logoCHICAGOLAND COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – The CARDINAL STRITCH UNIVERSITY WOLVES, the defending national champions of NAIA2 basketball, had a bye in the 1st Round of the CCAC tournament. Last night they took the floor for the first time this postseason against the CALUMET COLLEGE CRIMSON WAVE and used a 20-2 run to help convert a 42-39 Halftime lead into a 76-59 victory.   ###   The ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS got off to a 16-0 start enroute to an 84-61 win over the ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS   ###   Meanwhile the ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES used an 11-3 run in the final minutes to defeat the HOLY CROSS COLLEGE SAINTS 78-70   ###   And the ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS and the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS were tied up at 72-72 when Regulation ended. In Overtime the Lakers pulled off the upset by a final score of 88-84.

grace college USECROSSROADS LEAGUE – The GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS pulled off one of the big upsets of the opening night for the Crossroads League Tournament. The Lancers – Rachel Laird’s favorite team in the Crossroads League – were the 6 seeds but toppled the 3rd seeded HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY FORESTERS in a 56-54 defensive epic.   ###   For their part the SPRING ARBOR UNIVERSITY COUGARS were the stars of the other shocker from this conference last night. The 7th seeded Cougars dispatched the 2nd seeded ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS in a 63-55 affair.   ###   The 4th seeded BETHEL COLLEGE (IN) PILOTS (riverboat pilots) had no problem taking care of business and defeated the visiting 5 seeds, the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS by a score of 67-52   ###   And in the top spot the INDIANA WESLEYAN WILDCATS sent the TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS home with a 79-68 loss.  

Dordt College LARGEGREAT PLAINS ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – Nothing but classics in GPAC play last night! The top seeded DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS got a scare from the 8th seeded NORTHWESTERN (IA) RED RAIDERS last night and needed Overtime to advance to the semifinals. The Defenders moved on with a 105-100 win in the extra session.   ###   The 6 seeds, the DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS, didn’t just threaten an upset, they carried through on it, bringing down the 3rd seeded MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS in an 83-80 Instant Classic   ###   In a 4 seed over 5 seed win the HASTINGS COLLEGE BRONCOS edged the NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRAIRIE WOLVES 73-69   ###   And in the 2 spot the MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS had to go all out to sneak past the 7th seeded BRIAR CLIFF CHARGERS in an 87-84 wakeup call.  

Northwest Christian University BeaconsCASCADE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE – Continuing the theme of 6 seeds upsetting 3 seeds the (6) NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY BEACONS got up early on the (3) SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS and never looked back, springboarding off a 14-3 run in the 1st Half to sprint for an 86-74 victory   ###   The COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES came into the tournament as the top seed but with a 9-game postseason losing streak hanging over their heads. A 21-3 run in the 2nd Half propelled the Coyotes to a 92-65 manhandling of the 8th seeded EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS.   ###   Meanwhile the OREGON TECH HUSTLIN’ OWLS proved once again that they know how to play when it matters, as the 7th seeded OIT toppled the 2 seeds, the CONCORDIA (OR) CAVALIERS by a final score of 76-61   ###   And the 4th seeded NORTHWEST UNIVERSITY EAGLES converted a 34-24 Halftime lead into a 70-55 defeat of the 5th seeded WARNER PACIFIC COLLEGE KNIGHTS.   

williampennStatesmenMIDWEST COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE – The 2nd seeded WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN scored a Century Club- level 106 points compared to the 96 put up by their First Round opponents, the AIB COLLEGE OF BUSINESS EAGLES   ###   Meanwhile the 6th seeded MOUNT MERCY UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS lived up to all the other 6 seed over 3 seed upsets last night by shocking the CLARKE UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS by a score of 79-73   ###   And in the 5 spot the GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS (the reigning champs of NAIA football) upset the 4th seeded VITERBO UNIVERSITY V-HAWKS in a 73-63 battle. The conference’s top seeds, the SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES, had a bye in the FIrst Round.  

Northwestern Ohio RacersWOLVERINE-HOOSIER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – The 3rd seeded UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN OHIO RACERS were determined not to join their fellow 3 seeds in suffering First Round upsets. The Racers led the 6th seeded LOURDES UNIVERSITY GRAY WOLVES 37-32 at the Half and then accelerated to an 83-69 win in the 2nd Half.   ###   The  4th seeded MADONNA UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS went on a 20-6 run midway through the 2nd Half to pull away from the 5th seeded AQUINAS SAINTS for a 76-66 win   ###   In the meantime the 2nd seeds, the DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS, mauled the 7th seeded INDIANA TECH WARRIORS by a score of 72-51   ###   And the top seeded CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY GOLDEN EAGLES kept the WHAC’s opening round all chalk as they routed the 8th seeded CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS to the tune of 83-57.  

pointuniversiyskyhawksAPPALACHIAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – Last night’s opening round in this league’s tournament saw the 8th seeded POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS crushing the 9th seeded TRUETT- MCCONNELL COLLEGE BEARS at the break by a score of 49-28, then squelching a TMC comeback attempt to win by a final score of 81-71.   ###   The 10th seeded SAINT ANDREWS (NC) UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS held a tight 40-39 Halftime advantage over the 7th seeded MONTREAT COLLEGE CAVALIERS, then maintained their intensity after the break to upset the Cavaliers by a score of 77-71. There were just these two games in the opening round of the AAC Tournament.  

presentation college saints logo smallerNORTH STAR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION – There was just one game being played last night in the FIRST EVER North Star Athletic Association conference Tournament. The 4th seeded PRESENTATION COLLEGE SAINTS and the 5th seeded MAYVILLE STATE COMETS faced each other in this inaugural game. This was a defensive masterpiece from start to finish and at the break the Comets led by a score of just 24-21. The Saints mounted a comeback in the 2nd Half to advance by a final score of 56-49. Presentation College will face the league’s top seeded JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES next.

Southeastern (IA) College BlackhawksREGION 111 – Yesterday the semifinals were played in Division One, Region Eleven. The 2nd seeded SOUTHEASTERN (IA) COLLEGE BLACKHAWKS and the 3rd seeded IOWA WESTERN REIVERS squared off in a rematch of last year’s Region 111 Championship Game. This time the Blackhawks prevailed, clubbing the Reivers by a score of 88-71.   ###   And speaking of clubbing, the top seeds, the INDIAN HILLS COLLEGE WARRIORS, made the proverbial mincemeat out of the 4th seeded MARSHALLTOWN COLLEGE TIGERS to the tune of ONE HUNDRED THIRTY- THREE to EIGHTY!
