The Cardinals played like that other team from Ann Arbor and dismantled the River Hawks by a final score of FIFTY-EIGHT to NOTHING!

The SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS welcomed NCAA Division TWO’s PANHANDLE STATE AGGIES and defeated them in a 42-35 Instant Classic that the SAGU faithful will be talking about for years.   

Robert Morris (IL)NUMBER FOUR TAKES A FALL – The fourth-ranked team in the nation, the UNIVERSITY OF ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS, welcomed the NAIA’s unranked but 6-3 ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES yesterday. Despite being in their first few years of playing intercollegiate football the Eagles have performed very solidly year in and year out and yesterday saw another signature win for Robert Morris. The Eagles toppled the Cougars in a 28-24 game for the ages.

Pittsburg State GorillasAND ANOTHER NUMBER FOUR TAKES A FALL – Meanwhile over in the NCAA Division Two rankings, another number four team found themselves upset, and this one also fell in their own house. The 10th-ranked PITTSBURG (KS) STATE UNIVERSITY GORILLAS were taking on the number 4 MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS in a clash between MIAA rivals. The Gorillas asserted their authority with a 34-14 road win.    

Baker U Wildcats helmetTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The 9th-ranked BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS traveled to take on the number 6 MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS and stunned their higher-ranked opponents in a 13-10 Overtime nailbiter   ###   And the unranked DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS likewise played road warriors. In the case of the Tigers they were playing the 16th-ranked CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS and punched them in the face with a 28-7 upset victory.  

North_AlabamaTOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION TWO – The UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA LIONS were guests of the number 8 defending champions of D2 football, the VALDOSTA STATE UNIVERSITY BLAZERS and shocked the nation with a masterful 57-7 dismantling of their Gulf South Conference rivals   ###   The NEWBERRY WOLVES hosted the 12th-ranked UNC-PEMBROKE BRAVES and toppled them 24-21   ###   And the TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE LIONS brought down the homestanding number 24 team the TARLETON STATE TEXANS  22-20.   

Illinois Wesleyan Titans helmetTOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION THREE – The 20th-ranked ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TITANS welcomed the number 10 WHEATON COLLEGE THUNDER and sent them home nursing a 30-19 defeat   ###   Meanwhile the unranked ITHACA COLLEGE BOMBERS trailed the visiting 25th-ranked SAINT JOHN FISHER CARDINALS 7-6 at Halftime but came alive in the 2nd Half for a 25-22 upset win.  

Cumberlands_KYTHESE GAMES WERE ANYTHING BUT RANK – The number 2 team in the nation, the UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS, traveled to battle the 19th-ranked REINHARDT EAGLES, who are having an amazing debut year for their football program. The Patriots barely survived the upstart Eagles, eking out a 28-24 win   ###   And the number 3 GRAND VIEW VIKINGS defeated the visiting 8th-ranked ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES 35-21.

Christopher Newport CaptainsA DIFFERENT CATEGORY OF RANKED TEAMS – The CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS clobbered the homestanding GREENSBORO PRIDE by a score of 42-13   ###   Meanwhile the MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS won a 21-14 affair at the SEWANEE TIGERS   ###   The WILKES UNIVERSITY COLONELS came out on top in a 21-17 Instant Classic against the STEVENSON MUSTANGS   ###   And the WASHINGTON & LEE UNIVERSITY GENERALS dismembered the visiting BRIDGEWATER (VA) EAGLES 42-13.  

Maritime College PrivateersWHAT A RUSH – The MARITIME COLLEGE PRIVATEERS got to break another two-by-four in half and set a new program record as well. The Privateers’ unique post-victory ritual was observed after defeating the visiting CASTLETON STATE SPARTANS 38-6. As a bonus Maritime College amassed 550 rushing yards for a new single-game record for the team. The Privateers are now 3-1 in conference play, 3-4 overall.   

Coffeyville Red Ravens helmetA DOUBLE SHOT OF THAT OT LOVE – Yesterday the game between the COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS and the visiting GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS was a game for the memory books. The two Jayhawk Conference rivals wound up battling through regulation and TWO Overtime periods before a winner was determined. In the end the Red Ravens won by a score of 37-34.  

Concord UniversityDOUBLE STRANGE DOUBLE OVERTIME – This week also saw a very strange Double Overtime affair between the CONCORD UNIVERSITY MOUNTAIN LIONS and the CHARLESTON GOLDEN EAGLES. The Mountain Lions and the homestanding Golden Eagles proved incredibly reluctant to score any points and regulation ended in a 3-3 tie. In the 2nd OT Concord at last won 9-3.

Butler (KS) GrizzliesTHEY SHOOT FOOTBALL PLAYERS, DON’T THEY? – The Marathon Game of the Day for this time around goes to the gridiron clash between those two perennial rivals the BUTLER (KS) GRIZZLIES and the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS. Hutch presumably felt Butler was vulnerable after their loss to Highland College earlier this season but both teams’ offenses took the day off. This turned out to be a game for the ages, going back and forth and turning the hair of the spectators grey before the Indians at last emerged with a 39-36 victory.

ECSU VikingsWORKING OVERTIME – The ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY VIKINGS went into Overtime at the CHOWAN UNIVERSITY HAWKS and went home with a 37-31 win   ###   And the BENEDICTINE (IL) EAGLES welcomed the WISCONSIN LUTHERAN COLLEGE WARRIORS in a game that likewise needed an extra session. The Eagles won this game by a final score of 34-28.

MidAmerica_Nazarene_KSROAD WARRIORS FLEXING THEIR MUSCLES – The MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS traveled to face the AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES (formerly the Avalanche) and walked away with a 44-30 triumph   ###   And the (20) LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS were on the road against the BELHAVEN COLLEGE BLAZERS and clobbered them to the tune of 49-15. 

West Virginia Wesleyan helmetWHERE IS THE LOVE? – It’s past time for Balladeer’s Blog to show some love to a few teams that have been unjustly neglected by my 2013 football coverage. The WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN BOBCATS mauled the visiting WEST LIBERTY HILLTOPPERS 38-21 yesterday   ###   Meanwhile the EAST STROUDSBURG WARRIORS notched a 43-26 road win over the KUTZTOWN GOLDEN BEARS   ###   And the COLORADO MINES OREDIGGERS handed a 27-10 defeat to the homestanding COLORADO MESA MAVERICKS.   

Saint Francis Fighting SaintsPILING ON – The (24) SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS added to the misery of the 2013 season for the defending champions of NAIA football, the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS. The Fighting Saints beat the homestanding Knights 20-6, improving to 5-3 while Marian falls to 4-4   ###   And the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS kept the visiting GRACELAND YELLOW JACKETS stuck with 1 win for the year, defeating them 38-24.  

Erie KatsVARYING DEGREES OF VICTORY – The ERIE COLLEGE KATS dismembered the visiting ONANDOGA COLLEGE OGRES by a score of 35-7   ###   The NASSAU COLLEGE LIONS devoured the LOUISBURG COLLEGE HURRICANES 48-6 in their own house   ###   The HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES routed the INDEPENDENCE PIRATES  56-30   ###   And the TYLER APACHES displayed defensive perfection in a 42-0 bashing of the KILGORE COLLEGE RANGERS.

Sioux FallsKEY TO THE CITY GAME – The Key to the City Game is played each year between the UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS and the AUGUSTANA COLLEGE (SD) VIKINGS. This is one of those rivalries that is played between two teams that are not just from the same state but the same CITY! The Cougars took Sioux Falls bragging rights for the next 365 days by racking up an impressive 27-10 win over the visiting Vikings.

Nebraska-KearneyDOUBLING UP – The UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-KEARNEY LOPERS took it on the road against the SOUTHWEST BAPTIST BEARCATS and doubled up on them 28-14   ###   The CATAWBA COLLEGE INDIANS likewise notched an impressive road win, beating the BREVARD TORNADOES 34-17   ###   And the ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUE BOYS clobbered the visiting KNOX PRAIRIE FIRE 48-24.

Central MissouriKICKS LIKE A MULE – The UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES crushed the visiting NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS to the tune of 51-7   ###   Meanwhile the MUHLENBERG COLLEGE MULES logged a 27-7 road win over the JUNIATA EAGLES   ###   And the COLBY COLLEGE WHITE MULES sent the BATES BOBCATS home nursing a 21-3 thumping.  

Peru_St_NE_OLD3A VERY MEMORABLE 2013 –  A few teams are having their greatest football season in years, or ever for that matter. The PERU STATE BOBCATS are 7-1 and ranked number 12 in the nation. Yesterday the Bobcats notched a 51-24 road beatdown of the CENTRAL METHODIST EAGLES   ###   And the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES are having the best season their young football program has ever seen. The Gyrenes are 4-2 after a 28-13 win over the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL WARRIORS.

Jamestown College JimmiesUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NAIA – The JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES took it on the road against the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS and came away with an edge-of-your- seat 16-13 victory   ###   Meanwhile the KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES won a tight 38-34 home stand against the BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS   ###   And the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS defeated the visiting CUMBERLAND BULLDOGS in a 24-19 nailbiter.

Minot State Beavers helmetUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – D2 – The MINOT STATE BEAVERS won at the MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON GOLDEN EAGLES in a 20-19 nailbiter   ###   The SHAW BEARS squeezed out a 39-33 win over the homestanding JOHNSON C SMITH GOLDEN BULLS   ###   The VIRGINIA-WISE HIGHLAND CAVALIERS won an 18-10 affair against the WEST VIRGINIA STATE YELLOW JACKETS   ###   The traveling FORT LEWIS SKYHAWKS snuck past the WESTERN STATE MOUNTAINEERS 10-9   ###   And the EASTERN NEW MEXICO GREYHOUNDS won a 13-10 clash with the KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS.

Northeast Mississippi Tigers helmetTHURSDAY NIGHT THRASHINGS – Thursday night saw the usual blowouts down in the NJCAA – the NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE TIGERS won a 30-9 home stand over the MISSISSIPPI DELTA TROJANS   ###   The top-ranked GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS annihilated the visiting GEORGIA PREP SPORTS ACADEMY LIONS by a score of 67-16   ###   And the COPIAH-LINCOLN WOLFPACK tripled up on the SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI BEARS 42-14.
