NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM FEBRUARY 16TH

Loyola_WolfpackTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA DIVISION ONE – The LOYOLA WOLFPACK hosted the number 9 FAULKNER EAGLES and handled them pretty impressively. They sent the Eagles home with a 61-43 loss. The Wolfpack improved to 15-11 with two more games left in their regular season. Faulkner is now 23-5, likewise with two regular season games left.   ###   The UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS toppled the visiting 23rd ranked MIDAMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EVANGELS in a 74-69 Instant Classic   ###   … And the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS went into overtime with the (T23) CULVER- STOCKTON WILDCATS before eking out a 79-78 home victory.

Embry-Riddle EaglesTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA DIVISION TWO – The 14th ranked AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES fell on the road to the number 16 EMBRY- RIDDLE EAGLES by a score of 71-58. With the win ERAU moves to 22-7 on the season with the Gyrenes falling to 21-7.   ###   In another clash of ranked teams the (23) BELLEVUE BRUINS toppled the visiting 15th ranked YORK PANTHERS  80-67   ###   … And the GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS handed the number 25 TAYLOR TROJANS a road loss in a 69-63 game for the ages.

West Virginia Tech logoWEST VIRGINIA TECH RULES THE WORLD – The WEST VIRGINIA TECH GOLDEN BEARS were this week’s NAIA team to upset an NCAA Division TWO team. For newbies to these divisions that’s like a Division 2 team toppling a Division 1 team. The Golden Bears welcomed the CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS on Senior Day and smacked them around for an 89-69 victory. Tech improved to 18-10 on the season.

depauw tigers logoTOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA D3 – The WOOSTER SCOTS, the number 9 team in the nation, suffered a 68-52 upset at the hands of the homestanding DEPAUW TIGERS. DePauw is now 16-9 and the Scots are at 21-4.   ###   … And the unranked SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEA GULLS took it on the road and brought down the 25th ranked WESLEY WOLVERINES in an exhausting 83-78 Double Overtime epic that will have the Sea Gull faithful talking for years to come.

virginia intermontCENTURY CLUB – The NAIA’s VIRGINIA INTERMONT COLLEGE COBRAS lead off this category for the week. The Cobras were on the road against the MONTREAT CAVALIERS and handed them a 102-89 loss   ###   The (13) DORDT DEFENDERS defeated the visiting DOANE TIGERS by a score of 104-73   ###   The GEORGETOWN (KY) TIGERS and the BLUEFIELD COLLEGE RAMBLIN’ RAMS both notched Century Club numbers yesterday, but the Tigers came out on top 104-100   ###   The (20) LSU- SHREVEPORT PILOTS eviscerated the UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTHWEST MUSTANGS in a 117-73 laugher   ###   … And the MITCHELL MARINERS sent the WHEELOCK WILDCATS packing with a 100-81 loss.

First the JOHN BROWN GOLDEN EAGLES defeated the LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS in an 84-78 grudge match   ###   The SAGE GATORS and the OLD WESTBURY PANTHERS also needed two Overtimes, with the Gators at last emerging with a 98-96 victory   ###   The LYCOMING WARRIORS used the extra sessions to notch a 97-95 road win over the HOOD CHARGERS   ###   The LAWRENCE VIKINGS topped the GRINNELL PIONEERS 114-106 in a Single Overtime scoring orgy   ###   … And the HILBERT HAWKS took down the LA ROCHE RED HAWKS by a score of 79-75, also in Single Overtime.

Plattsburgh_250x250TOP 15 UPSETS – D3 COLLEGE HOCKEY – The number 4 team in the nation, the OSWEGO STATE LAKERS, were on the road against the 10th ranked PLATTSBURGH STATE CARDINALS. The Cardinals pulled off a 4-3 upset to improve to 18-6-1. The Lakers close out their regular season at 21-4.   ###   … And at number 15 the STEVENS POINT POINTERS fell on their own ice to the unranked RIVER FALLS FALCONS in a 4-1 butt- kicking. River Falls moved to 13-10-4 while the Pointers are 15-11-1.

Manhattanville ValiantsOVERTIME ON ICE – The unranked MANHATTANVILLE VALIANTS hosted the number 2 UTICA PIONEERS and fought them to a 4-4 tie in Overtime. With this result the Valiants (love that name) are 13-9-3 and the Pioneers are now 20-4-1.   ###   The (7) BOWDOIN POLAR BEARS topped the CONNECTICUT COLLEGE CAMELS 2-1 in the extra session   ###   The (14) WILLIAMS EPHS notched a 4-3 OT road win over the Hamilton Continentals   ###   The traveling CONCORDIA- MOORHEAD COBBERS edged the ST MARY’S MINN CARDINALS by a similar 4-3 score   ###   … And the UMASS- DARTMOUTH CORSAIRS managed a 4-4 Overtime tie with the visiting PLYMOUTH STATE PANTHERS.

The STONEHILL SKYHAWKS skated onto the home ice of the ASSUMPTION GREYHOUNDS and obliterated them to the tune of 6-0   ###   The GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS GUSTIES logged a 2-0 road win over the ST OLAF OLES   ###   … And the ST THOMAS TOMMIES likewise notched a road shutout, blanking the AUGSBURG AUGGIES by a score of 3-0.

monroe tribunesNJCAA FROZEN FOUR ALL SET – The semi-final teams in the NJCAA are all set for next weekend’s conclusion to the hockey season for that division of college play. The defending champion MONROE TRIBUNES are the 1 seed, the WILLISTON STATE TETONS, last year’s runners- up, are the 2 seed, the HUDSON VALLEY VIKINGS are at 3 and the ERIE COLLEGE KATS round out the field in the 4 spot. On the 23rd the Tribunes battle the Kats and the Tetons take on the Vikings with the winners facing each other for the title on Sunday the 24th.
