*** CCCAA CHAMPIONSHIP ***
THE STREETS OF BAKERSFIELD – The BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES completed their fairytale postseason run today in the CCCAA championship game. Compared to last year’s CCCAA title game the 2012 edition lacked a certain amount of drama with the Renegades dominating from start to finish. Bakersfield dethroned the reigning champs, the CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO RAMS, in a 35-14 spanking. After compiling a 28-14 lead by halftime the Renegades coasted through the rest of the game to become the 2012 CCCAA champions!
*** NCAA D2 PLAYOFFS ***
BLAZING A TRAIL TO THE TITLE GAME – The first semifinal in Division 2 today was played between the VALDOSTA STATE UNIVERSITY BLAZERS and the homestanding MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS. The first half was a tightly contested affair with the Blazers leading at half-time 14-10. The second half saw the Mavericks fall further and further behind, 21-10, then 21-13 and then 28-13. The Mavs scored for the last time headed into the 4th quarter, making the score 28-19 after a failed 2-point conversion attempt. Valdosta State notched another score to give us a final score of 35-19 and send them to next week’s championship game.
RAM TOUGH – The darlings of the HBCU, the WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY RAMS, trailed 7-6 at one point to the Cinderella WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES before taking it up a notch. By halftime the Rams led 20-7 and when the dust settled at the end of the 4th quarter WSSU had won by an authoritative score of 34-10. The Buffaloes fall one game short of being this year’s Wayne State while WSSU advances to the D2 championship game to face the Blazers.
*** NCAA D3 PLAYOFFS ***
TYPICAL MT UNION FOOTBALL – In the first D3 semifinal of the day the MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS spotted the UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN BAYLOR CRUSADERS a lead, just to toy with them. The Crusaders held a 28-14 advantage late in the 3rd quarter, but by the time there was 3:42 left in the 4th quarter everything was knotted up at 35-35. The Purple Raiders scored a go-ahead touchdown with 5 seconds left, making the score 42-35. A desperation blunder by UMHB in the final seconds allowed Mt Union to score AGAIN, making the final tally 48-35. The Purple Raiders return to the D3 championship game yet again after losing the last 3 title bouts in a row to Whitewater.
TOMMY CAN YOU HEAR ME? – D3’s second semifinal held a lot less drama than the opening game of the day. The UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS TOMMIES dominated this game with the OSHKOSH TITANS and held a comfortable 21-7 lead at halftime. Both teams scored again in the 3rd quarter making the score 28-14 headed into the 4th. That final quarter was a bruising defensive duel with no more points yielded by either side, making 28-14 the final score. For the first time in 8 years Mt Union will be facing an opponent OTHER than Whitewater in the Stagg Bowl.
