The 2012 college football season in the divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog kicks off on August 22nd! To keep us all sane until then I’ve been showcasing the coolest football helmets in those divisions.
This week it’s the NCFA’s turn. The Chabot College Gladiators (logo at left), who are ranked at number 10 in Balladeer’s Blog’s preseason rankings, would have made this list, too, if not for one thing.
The Gladiators used to wear cool black helmets with two gold C’s interlinked but have switched to helmets with just one C on it, knocking them off this list. But still, the name Gladiators stands out tall and proud in a college sports landscape overflowing with teams called Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs and Wildcats.
6. COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO BULLDOGS
Location: San Mateo, CA
Conference: NorCal Conference
Comment: If you’re going to use just letters on your football helmet do it the right way like the Bulldogs have and use a unique and eye-catching font. Their team also made my preseason rankings.
5. MERCED BLUE DEVILS
Location: Merced, CA
Conference: Golden Gate Conference
Comment: Not the Blue Devils of Coach K and Sonny Jurgensen fame, but instead the Blue Devil team that makes a lot of noise on the west coast. The Merced River was where the famous outlaw Tom Bell was hanged in the 1850’s.
4. SHASTA COLLEGE KNIGHTS
Location: Redding, CA
Conference: Bay Valley Conference
Comment: There’s something about the stark simplicity of these helmets that strikes a chord with me. They’re sort of old school but defiantly so and that quality is what put them on this list.
3. SANTA ROSA BEAR CUBS
Location: Santa Rosa, CA
Conference: NorCal Conference
Comment: If that’s just a bear cub I sure don’t want to meet its mother! In a state noted for its bear population as much as for its Gold Rush past Santa Rosa’s teams have both the perfect name and the perfect helmet logo.
2. MONTEREY PENINSULA LOBOS
Location: Monterey, CA
Conference: Coast Conference
Comment: Not Lobos, but “LOBOOOOOS”. NBA fans will get it. A team with a next-level cool name like Lobos needs butt-kicking helmets to go with it and these terrific helmets fill the bill nicely.

Location: Sacramento, CA
Conference: Mid Empire Conference
Comment: How can you not love our number one entry? These helmets are so cool they give new meaning to the old cliche about just rolling your helmets out on the field and watching the other team give up.
