THE COOLEST HELMETS IN NCCAA COLLEGE FOOTBALL

As a public service to all of us college football fans eagerly awaiting the start of the 2012 season Balladeer’s Blog presents another look at some of the coolest helmets in the divisions covered here.

Last week I covered the coolest helmets in NAIA  college football. This time around I’ll feature the coolest helmets in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association). Each year the NCCAA’s premier gridiron event is the Victory Bowl and Balladeer’s Blog brings you coverage right here.

 6. SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM

Location: Bethany, OK

Comment: Southern Nazarene University just moved back to the NCCAA after years in the NAIA. The name Crimson Storm sounds like a rock band and this team definitely rocks the field. They ended last season in style with a conference title.

5. TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS

Location: Upland, IN

Comment: The conference affiliation for these Trojans is the Mid- States Football Association. Taylor University football has a name for pulling off at least one giant-killing upset every season in recent years.

 4. CHOWAN UNIVERSITY HAWKS

Location: Murfreesboro, NC

Comment: Originally founded as Chowan Baptist Female Institute in 1848 this university became co-ed in 1931. Their official colors are Chowan Blue and White, with their mascot being the famous and revered Murf the Hawk.

 3. MALONE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS

Location: Canton, OH

Comment: Quakers Walter and Emma Malone founded this institution in 1892. The university’s football team is made of hardy stock like Pioneers are supposed to be and you can’t help but feel Walter and Emma are somewhere cheering them on in the fall.

 2. NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS

Location: Tigerville, SC

Comment: Now here’s a helmet that makes you want to don a suit of armor and grab a sword! For all kinds of reasons Crusaders is a butt-kicking name and getting to strap on a helmet like that would get you ready to kick some actual butt!

 1. AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS

Location: Azusa, CA

Comment: The Cougars have long worn this terrific helmet that can’t help but remind you of Wolverine’s claws. If Taylor dabbles in giant-killing APU specializes in it with multiple upsets a year, sometimes even of NCAA Division 1 teams.

Ok. I am being sassy here. But does the NCCAA have any teams named like “God’s Warriors” or anything like that?

    • Crusaders might count. Other cool names are the Ozark Christian College Ambassadors, the Johnson University Preachers and the Nebraska Christian College Parsons but none of them have football teams yet.

  5. I want my sons to play in this league!! Fantastic to see something like the NCCAA exists!

  6. I’m telling my brother about these teams! He could play for these teams and not get made fun of because of his religion!

  7. Surprised to see I never heard of any of these teams. Azusa Pacific has a great campus! I went to their site!
