NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASEBALL RESULTS FROM APRIL 14TH

The GALVESTON COLLEGE WHITECAPS (logo at left) took on the ANGELINA COLLEGE ROADRUNNERS (not the Joelies) and  crushed them in an 8-2 affair that saw the Whitecaps machine firing on all pistons. Galveston’s Kyle Giusti was among the offensive leaders in the rout.

DIAMOND DAN-O-URA – In a college baseball equivalent of the Battle of Dan-O- Ura (I love pompous and thoroughly inappropriate sports analogies) the NAIA’s top-ranked LSU- SHREVEPORT PILOTS (as in riverboat pilots) clashed with fellow baseball power the UT-BROWNSVILLE SCORPIONS. The Pilots emerged with a 10-9 road victory in one of the weekend’s best games.

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – TWICE – At number 2, the LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES were upset on Friday the 13th by the BRYAN LIONS in a 9-8 Instant Classic. The score was 9-5 going into the 9th inning when the Flames bats got hot (sorry) but wound up one run short of sending the game into extra innings. Yesterday the Flames fell at home to the 16th- ranked AUBURN- MONTGOMERY SENATORS by a score of 8-7. Those one- run losses can really sting!

EAGLES OUTRUN THE HORNETS – The (4) FAULKNER EAGLES came out two runs better than the homestanding SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC RUNNING HORNETS in a 3-1 game that started out as a classic pitcher’s duel.

TWELVE OVER SIX – Ranked at number 12, the ST THOMAS (FL) BOBCATS upset the number 6 team in the nation, the EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY EAGLES, who I still say should change their name to the Aeronauts. The final score was 5-4.

BISON OVER CHAPS – The 7th- ranked OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON survived a tough home game against the number 14 LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS by a score of 4-3. The (8) TN WESLEYAN BULLDOGS, meanwhile, handed the Bryan Lions a 4-2 loss in a neutral site matchup at the Chattanooga Lookouts stadium.

NOT SO BLUE RAIDERS – The (13) LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS took it on the road and snatched a doubleheader from the ST CATHARINE PATRIOTS.  A 6-1 manhandling was followed by a tighter 8-5 affair.

BLUE JAY SPLIT – The 14th- ranked TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS, meanwhile, split their doubleheader with the KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES by scores of 5-2 in the win and 8-0. The slaughter-rule loss to the homestanding Coyotes was called after 5 innings.

INSTANT CLASSIC – The crowd attending yesterday’s diamond duel between the (18) GEORGETOWN (KY) TIGERS and the RIO GRANDE (OH) RED STORM saw a game for the ages. In the end the visiting Tigers emerged with a 4-3 victory.

THAT’S NOT A FOOTBALL SCORE – The (21) FREED HARDEMAN LIONS dismembered the CROWLEY’S RIDGE PIONEERS and then burned their remains in an unbelievable 16-0 game. Maybe Crowley’s Ridge should change their name to the Aleisters to try to change their luck. I’m kidding!

SAND SHARKS, NOT LAND SHARKS – The 22nd- ranked SOUTH CAROLINA- BEAUFORT SAND SHARKS (love that name) won a 2-0 pitcher’s duel with the WARNER ROYALS yesterday. Believe it or not there really is a college sports team called the Land Sharks. They play for Landmark College and they were one of my Cool-Named Teams of the Day last year.

HAWKS TRIUMPHANT – The (24) SHORTER HAWKS defeated the BELHAVEN BLAZERS 5-1 in a game that proved the Hawks still have a lot of fuel in the tank. Their detractors write off their chances at their own peril.

… AND SOMETIMES IT RAINS – The UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS’ scheduled game against the SW OKLAHOMA STATE BULLDOGS was called on account of rain.

A FIRESTORM OF RUNS – The ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM (how can you not love that name) defeated the LA SIERRA GOLDEN EAGLES 7-3. The neutral- site game was played in the stadium of the GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY ANTELOPES.

WORKIN’ NINE TO FIVE – The ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES defeated the GRAND VIEW VIKINGS by a score of 9-5 yesterday.

HANGOVER? – The LOURDES UNIVERSITY GRAY WOLVES, just one week after their astonishing 17 inning game, got slapped around by the visiting CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS in a doubleheader. The Gray Wolves lost by scores of 6-1 and 11-3.

ELEVEN IS ENOUGH – Yesterday’s first game between the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS and the BENEDICTINE RAVENS went 11 innings, with the Crusaders pulling out a 7-6 win. Game 2 of the doubleheader was anticlimactic, with Evangel defeating the homestanding Ravens 6-3.

DOUBLE-HEADED VICTORIES – The VITERBO V-HAWKS won both games against the MT MERCY MUSTANGS by scores of 3-2 and 4-1 *** The MENLO OAKS took two from the SIMPSON (CA) REDHAWKS yesterday, the first game a 10 inning 5-4 victory followed by a 7-2 blowout *** The ILLINOIS TECH SCARLET HAWKS fell to the ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES by scores of 9-3 and 6-3 *** The JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES went on the road and snatched a pair from the VCS VIKINGS 5-3 and 4-2.

HOW ‘BOUT THEM … TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS, who annihilated the HUSTON- TILLOTSON RAMS 14-3 *** TRINITY CHRISTIAN TROLLS, who defeated the HOLY CROSS (IN) SAINTS in a much tighter 5-2 outcome *** UVA-WISE HIGHLAND CAVALIERS, who squeaked out an 8-7 win over the PIKEVILLE BEARS
