FEBRUARY FRENZY: COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM FEBRUARY 26TH

The Monroe College Tribunes (logo at left) won the 2012 NJCAA College Hockey Championship by defeating the equally cool-named Williston State Tetons 4-2 in the title game yesterday.

The Tetons (as in the mountains of that name) started off the scoring with a power play goal just a few minutes into the game, but the Tribunes came back to lead the game 2-1 by the end of the First Period. Both goaltenders shut the opposition out in the Second Period but early in the Third Period Monroe made it 3-1. Williston made it 3-2 before much longer but by game’s end the Tribunes had added another goal for the 4-2 victory.

Both teams made it to the title game with convincing wins in the semifinals. The Tetons took down the Erie Paws 6-3 and Monroe slapped down the College of Morris Mustangs 9-2.

In college basketball:

The ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT INSTITUTIONS played their  conference championship yesterday. The top-seeded Jamestown College Jimmies showed their struggle with the 4th-seeded Dickinson State Blue Hawks the other day was a sign of things to come. The Dakota State Trojans, the 3 seed in the tournament, upset the Jimmies 80-71 to advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since 1992!

MIDWEST COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE – The (1) St Ambrose University Fighting Bees buzzed their way to an 84-55 victory over the (7) Grand View Vikings. The Fighting Bees earned the MCC’s automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament beginning next Wednesday.

THE YANKEE CONFERENCE – The (4) Vermont Tech Green Knights defeated the (6) New Hampshire Technical Institute Lynx 60-52 in a battle of Cinderellas. The Green Knights now have the YSCC title and move on to the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) National Tournament.
