Balladeer’s Blog is always on top of the whole cool-named college sports teams situation. In the tradition of my previous lists of cool-named teams in various divisions of college sports comes this latest effort. This list will showcase the 8 Coolest Named College Sports Teams From All-Female Institutions. The list is in alphabetical order.

 AGNES SCOTT COLLEGE SCOTTIES

Comment: If you liked Agnes Moorhead you’ll love Agnes Scott! Okay, maybe that’s not the greatest recruiting slogan, but it’s better than anything Penn State has to offer right now! And since I’m a self- proclaimed dog lover the Scotties is my kind of nickname!

 ALVERNO INFERNO        

Location: Milwaukee, WI

Comment: Burn, baby, burn, Disco Inferno!  If Alverno changed their teams’  nickname to the Disco Inferno they could use someone in a Disco Stu outfit as a mascot! Or if other teams imitated Alverno’s way of having a rhyming nickname we’d have the Embry Riddle Fiddles, the Sioux Falls Screw Balls and the Mid- Continent Incontinents. Sweet!

 

 COLUMBIA COLLEGE FIGHTING KOALAS

Location: Columbia, SC

Comment: Regular Koalas are deadly enough, but the lesser- known Fighting Koalas have  been known to maul over 300 people every single year. Did I look that up at Wikipedia or did I just make it up? Hey, six of one, half a dozen of the other!

 CONVERSE COLLEGE VALKYRIES

Location: Spartanburg, SC

Comment: Any nickname that combines college sports with mythology is bound to be a winner in my book! The Amazons from Graeco- Roman myths get the lion’s share of the attention, but I’ve always preferred the Valkyries from Norse myths.

 MARY BALDWIN SQUIRRELS

Location: Staunton, VA

Comment: Go Squirrels! Not even HannaBarberra’s  Secret  Squirrel  is cooler than the Mary  Baldwin College Squirrels!  And not even  Troma’s Toxie the radioactive squirrel is deadlier! In a college sports world littered with teams called Eagles, Tigers Bulldogs and Wildcats you have got to love MBC’s unique name. 

 MT MARY BLUE ANGELS

Location: Milwaukee, WI

Comment: If you don’t think the nickname Blue Angels is an appealing one there is something seriously wrong with you!  Any name shared by an airborne unit and a Marlena Dietrich film has cultural cache coming out the wazoo! 

 SAINT MARY’S BELLES

Location: Notre Dame, IN

Comment: Even if you don’t like the movie The Bells of Saint Mary’s that’s no reason not to like the Belles of Saint Mary’s! Or The Bells of St Berwyn for that matter! And when your teams play in a city called Notre Dame what more can you ask for?  

 SWEET BRIAR VIXENS

Location: Sweet Briar, VA

Comment: Vixens are what you call female foxes  and that nickname combined with that killer logo  makes Sweet Briar College one of the coolest teams around! Remember this list was in alphabetical order, so the Vixens may be last but by no means least!
