Yesterday Balladeer’s Blog presented the 16 team playoff field and First Round matchups for the NAIA’s College Football Playoffs. Today I’ll let the D2 field soak in. Since my blog is all about bringing fresh eyes to the divisions of college sports that I cover, many of my readers are newbies to sports at this level. Or for that matter, to playoffs in ANY format for college football. D2 has a 24 team playoff field and the Top 2 seeds in each of the 4 regions get a bye in the first round.
ONE SEEDS – (In order of nickname coolness) PUEBLO THUNDERWOLVES, DELTA STATE STATESMEN, MIDWESTERN STATE MUSTANGS, WINSTON- SALEM STATE RAMS
TWO SEEDS – (In order of nickname coolness) PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS, NEBRASKA- KEARNEY LOPERS, NEW HAVEN CHARGERS, MARS HILL LIONS
AND NOW THE FIRST ROUND MATCHUPS FOR NOVEMBER 19TH –
Super Region 1 – 6) CONCORD MOUNTAIN LIONS @ 3) KUTZTOWN GOLDEN BEARS / 5) CALIFORNIA (PA) VULCANS @ 4) ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY VIKINGS
Super Region 2 – 6) ALBANY (GA) STATE GOLDEN RAMS @ 3) NORTH GREENVILLE CRUSADERS / 5) NORTH ALABAMA LIONS @ 4) WEST ALABAMA TIGERS
Super Region 3 – 6) WAYNE STATE WARRIORS @ 3) ST CLOUD HUSKIES / 5) SAGINAW VALLEY CARDINALS @ 4) MINNESOTA- DULUTH BULLDOGS (reigning champions)
Super Region 4 – 6) ABILENE CHRISTIAN WILDCATS @ 3) WASHBURN ICHABODS / 5) NORTHWEST MISSOURI BEARCATS @ 4) MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS
The Gorillas and the Ichabods are no doubt glad to be in the playoffs instead of a Bowl Game this year. But on a nostalgic note, it seems odd not having Coach Mel Tjeerdsma leading the Bearcats any more.
At any rate, I’ll offer the D3 playoff field and matchups tomorrow, then the Bowl matchups for the various divisions that Balladeer’s Blog covers.
