COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH

This is my usual Saturday post where I provide links to updating scoreboards for the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers. First, though, my quick takes on some of last night’s games:

The Maritime College Privateers, one of the coolest-named teams in sports, carved up the Western Connecticut Colonials last night. Maritime won by a score of 48-0, setting up this season’s first post-victory ritual of breaking a two-by four. Hey, it’s odd but memorable!

The Catholic Cardinals at the Gallaudet Bison wound up being the game of the night, with the Continue reading

PULP HEROES: THE MOON MAN – STORIES 7-9

I’m continuing my look at Frederick C Davis’ pulp hero the Moon Man. In reality police detective Stephen Thatcher, the Moon Man stalked the night-darkened streets of fictional Great City (“Great City ya got here … it’d be a shame if something happened to it …”) clad in his black costume and his helmet made of one-way Argus glass. Armed with an automatic plus limitless courage and ingenuity the Moon Man captured or killed Great City’s most dangerous criminals (white collar and blue collar) and robbed them of their ill-gotten booty. He would then distribute that money to the city’s Great Depression-ravaged poor. ( “Great Depression ya got here … it’d be a shame if – ” oh, forget it!) All this made him hunted by both the crooks AND the cops. 7. MURDER MOON – A pack of crooks pulls off a daring robbery, stealing twelve thousand dollars (in 1930’s money) from Great City’s ritzy Continental Theater, only to have the loot stolen in turn from them by the Moon Man. Our hero wants his assistant Angel to relay the money to a ghetto clinic in order to keep it from folding. Rav Corsi, the boss of the gangsters who had their booty stolen by the Moon Man, feels the law closing in on him for related crimes and hatches a bold scheme to get the cops off his back. He and his henchmen plan to capture the Moon Man and turn him over to the police in exchange for immunity. To that end they stalk and capture Angel, torture him with a soldering iron and Continue reading

A LOOK AT SOME RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 8TH’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES

THEY’RE LUMBERJACKS AND THEY’RE OKAY – D2’s Humboldt State Lumberjacks played in the game of the night last night, emerging with a 38-36 victory. The ‘Jacks brought down the Central Washington Wildcats, the reigning champs of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the past five years in a row. This was the kind of game football fans live for, and it was televised nationwide on the cable outlet called CBS College Sports. Viewers not only got to see a terrific game but also got to see Humboldt State’s  fantastic stadium, the Redwood Bowl, which was featured during the summer as one of  Balladeer’s Blog’s Top 6 College Football Stadiums in Division 2.

BLAZING A BIZARRE TRAIL – The Valdosta State Blazers suffered through a very strange game from their offense but the defense and special teams picked up the slack, enabling VSU to defeat the Newberry Wolves 24-17. The Blazers’ first 14 points came from a  Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES THURSDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 8TH

Tonight there are not as many games in the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers as there were last Thursday, but there’s still quite a sampling. The NAIA has the night off and D3 has just one game going, but the NJCAA and D2 pick up the slack, especially the former. Two of D2’s games are being televised nationwide however, so we’ll start with those:

CENTRAL WASHINGTON WILDCATS  at the HUMBOLDT STATE LUMBERJACKS  – Airing on the cable channel called CBS College Sports at 8PM ET

NEWBERRY WOLVES  at the VALDOSTA STATE BLAZERS  – Airing on Cox SportsNet  at 7PM ET

D3’s sole game tonight features the MARYVILLE FIGHTING SCOTS at the Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 3RD: NAIA, NJCAA, D3 AND D2

The Langston Lions Rule The World – The NAIA’s Langston Lions ( who I always say should change their name to the Langston Hugheses … my fellow poetry geeks will get it) upset a team from TWO divisions higher. The Lions took down Division 1AA’s Arkansas- Pine Bluff Golden Lions in a 19-12 game for the ages … Honorable mention goes to the NAIA’s Azusa Pacific Cougars who took 1AA’s San Diego Toreros down to the wire (after defeating them last season) in a heartbreaking 42-40 outcome.

The Franklin Grizzlies Also Rule The World – D3’s Franklin Grizzlies also brought down a team two divisions higher. The Grizzlies beat the 1AA Valaparaiso Crusaders 49-35 on Valpo’s own field.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 3 – There were no upsets in the NAIA’s or D2’s Top 25 so we’ll jump straight to D3. The 4th ranked North Central Cardinals fell to the unranked Redlands Bulldogs in a 35-29 nailbiter … At number 10, the Coe Kohawks were defeated by the Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPTEMBER 3RD

Here is my weekly Saturday post providing links to updating scoreboards in the divisions of college football that Balladeer’s Blog covers. First, though, some quick comments about a few of last night’s games:

D2’s 6th- ranked  TAMK  Javelinas (the team that Hall of Famer Darrell Green played his college ball for)  picked up a road win last night with an authoritative 21-10 victory over the  Central Washington Wildcats.

The NAIA’s Mayville State Comets nearly pulled off an upset of a higher division team last night, but ultimately fell to the D2 Minnesota- Crookston Golden Eagles by a score of 31-29. With the loss the Comets are now 1-1 for the season.

In D3 football the Dartmouth Corsairs took down the Mt Ida Mustangs in a 24-21 Instant Classic of a game.

And now, links to each division’s scoreboards –

PULP HEROES: THE MOON MAN – STORIES 4-6

For more on the Moon Man and other neglected pulp heroes click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

4. THE SILVER SECRET – While distributing money from our hero’s latest theft from a wealthy crime figure, the Moon Man’s assistant Ned “Angel” Dargan discovers a man killed by the mob running Great City’s rackets and political circles. The brutal means of execution was a bear trap planted in the man’s bed- pillows (that’s gotta hurt). Angel is knocked unconscious and left to take the rap and the victim turns out to be a former District Attorney destroyed by the criminal powers-that- be in Great City.  The victim had compiled incriminating evidence on the big names in the city’s corrupt machine, including the Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 1ST’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES: NAIA, D2, D3 AND NJCAA

Last night started the second week of college football action (no matter what ESPN wants to pretend) and here is my latest take on some outcomes of note.

The Malone Pioneers Rule The World – The NAIA’s Malone Pioneers took down NCAA Division 2’s Tiffin Dragons 40-34 in Double Overtime, earning my usual headline when a team defeats a team from a higher division. To put this in context for newbies to lower division football this is like when a 1AA (FCS if you’re gutless) team upsets a 1A (FBS if you’re gutless) team … Honorable mention goes to D2’s 2nd ranked team, the Delta State Statesmen, who came within one point of toppling the 1AA Northwestern State Demons in a 24-23 nailbiter.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 2 – D2 was the only division in which ranked teams were upset last night. The 11th ranked California (PA) Vulcans fell at home to the 13th ranked St Cloud State Huskies in a 26-3 spanking … The unranked Pueblo Thunderwolves upset the Continue reading
