KADLU- The goddess who makes lightning by rubbing pieces of dry seal skin together. She dwells in Sedna’s subaquatic realm along with her sisters, Ignirtoq and Kweetoo. Inuit women would make offerings of white-tanned sealskin to her. Kadlu and her sisters were too much of a handful for their parents to handle and they eventually locked them out of their home. The three then went to live in the sea with Sedna (who no doubt saw in them kindred spirits), starting storms at her command. Kadlu and her two sisters are sometimes collectively referred to as “the Kadlu.”
IGNIRTOQ – Kadlu’s sister who makes her lightning by striking two stones together and who makes rain by urinating. (No, really.)
KWEETOO – Kadlu’s sister who makes the sound of thunder by jumping up and down on ice floes.
