March 28th, 1643 – The Earl of Derby leads his Royalist army in another attempt to drive the Parliamentarians out of Bolton. This attack was repulsed like the first one. The city of Bolton remained a Parliamentarian island in mostly-Royalist Lancashire until May of 1644 when Prince Rupert succeeded in taking it, but he and the Earl of Derby blackened the accomplishment by slaughtering 1,600 people of Bolton after the city was taken. After the Royalists lost the war the Earl of Derby was beheaded in 1649 in Bolton, the site of his war crimes.
