February 28th, 1644 – Latham House, one of the few Royalist strongholds left in Lancaster by 1644, came under siege by Parliamentarian forces under Sir Thomas Fairfax. A unique aspect to this siege was the fact that the Latham House troops were led by the Countess of Derby since her husband was away on the Isle of Man. Fairfax offered the Countess the opportunity to leave under a truce and be escorted to safety but, to her credit, she was determined to command the siege and remained in Latham House.
February 29th, 1644 – A rare “February 29th” bit of action so I’m throwing it in here. On this date the Parliamentarians began another siege of the crucial Royalist stronghold of Newark, this one led by Sir John Meldrum.
