February 10th, 1646 – With the object of relieving Exeter and of propping up the crumbling Royalist forces in the west country, Ralph Hopton, the First Baron Hopton, occupies Torrington with an army of some 5,000. He begins readying the town for the inevitable attack from the Parliamentarian Army under Sir Thomas Fairfax. First, however, the Ralphmeister had to deal with dissent in his own troops. Sir Richard Grenville resented Hopton being appointed commander of the Royalist forces in the Western Theater (or what was left of it for the Royalists) and refused to recognize his authority. Ralphie-boy (Honeymooners fans will get it) responded by having Grenville arrested and imprisoned on St Michael’s Mount.

Hello! Really interesting look at this war. Too many people slurp royal butt when they write about this war even though the royalists lost.
I know what you mean! Especially that otherwise good series By The Sword Divided. Thanks for commenting.
