February 2nd, 1643 – Prince Rupert of the Rhine, one of the most colorful figures in the Civil War, took Cirencester for the Royalists and prepared to advance on the key port city of Bristol. My view of Rupert is kind of like the view many people have of Rommel in World War II – I think he was on the wrong side but he has a certain panache that makes him stand out from his repulsive fellow officers.
February 2nd, 1645 – At the Battle of Inverlochy in the Scottish theater of the war James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose, led his Royalist forces in a victory over the Earl of Argyll. Despite Montrose’s stellar service in the cause of King Charles I he would later be sold out by the Royalists for political expediency and delivered into the hands of his enemies.
