TAMPA, Fla. – For the sixth consecutive year, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team will be playing in a holiday classic to prep for the upcoming Jayhawk West season.

The 23rd-ranked Lady Dragons make their first-ever trip to the state of Florida when Hutchinson plays Hillsborough Community College on Wednesday and St. Petersburg College on Thursday.

Both games will tip off at 1 p.m. (CT) each day. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide live video/audio streams each game with 12:45 p.m. airtimes each day.

This will be the seventh time in team history that the Lady Dragons will play over the Christmas/New Year’s break. Last season, HCC was the runner-up in the Peoria Holiday Classic, falling to eventual NJCAA Division II national champion Kirkwood. HCC is 11-3 all-time in holiday break games.

The Lady Dragons are 11-1 entering the final two non-conference games of the 2010-11 season. Hutchinson has won 10 or more non-conference games for the eighth-straight time and for the 27th time in program history.

On Wednesday, Hutchinson will take on a Hillsborough Hawks team that is 5-7. St. Petersburg is 10-4. The Titans will play Seward County on Wednesday and Hillsborough on Thursday.

The Lady Dragons bring in the 11th-ranked scoring offense in the country (84.4 points per game) and the third-ranked scoring defense in the NJCAA (47.8 points per game). Hutchinson is ranked eighth in 3-point percentage (38.5 percent) and has the sixth-most 3-point goals (99) in the nation this season. HCC is showing 47.8 percent overall from the field.

Hutchinson has four players averaging in double figures led by freshman point guard Alysse Barlow at 15.3 points per game. Freshman Chelsea Small is averaging 12.6 points, freshman Jackie Patterson is averaging 12.5 points and sophomore Britney Nuzum is averaging 11.8 points per game.

Hillsborough is scoring 66.8 points per game and is allowing 68.6 points. No individual stats were available. Hillsborough lost to St. Petersburg 78-74 on Dec. 17.

St. Petersburg is averaging 70.0 points per game offensively and 56.6 points per game defensively. The Titans shoot 40.4 percent overall and 31.0 percent from 3-point range.

The Titans have a balanced scoring attack with only one player averaging in double figures. Sophomore guard Kelsey Weynand is averaging 13.8 points per game and has a team-high 30 3-point field goals, shooting 34.5 percent from long range. Guard LaToya Marshall is averaging 8.1 points and guard Monique Grant is averaging 7.2 points per game.
