WICHITA – For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team was tapped to win the Jayhawk West championship, according to the conference coaches at the league’s annual media day on Monday at the Wichita Boathouse.

During the press conference, the NJCAA released its preseason Division I women’s basketball poll and the Lady Dragons were ranked No. 17.

The Lady Dragons have two starters and six returning players from last season’s 29-4 team that advanced to the Region VI semifinals, where they were defeated by eventual regional champion Labette.

Despite a couple of injuries in the preseason, the Lady Dragons look to have more depth and more scoring punch, according to fourth-year head coach John Ontjes.

Hutchinson’s preseason national ranking is its second-straight. Last season, the Lady Dragons were No. 10 in the preseason poll.

Lady Dragon fans can get a preseason look at the 2010-11 Lady Dragons with their final home scrimmage this Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson will open the season on Nov. 5-6 with the annual Quarterback Classic.
