HAMPTON’S HEROES: AN INTERVIEW WITH 3 USAO SOCCER STARS

Jimmy Hampton, Head Men’s Soccer Coach for the University Of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers, currently has his team at 12-2 (6-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference Play) and ranked 15th in the country. With the end of the regular season fast approaching, it seemed a good time to get together with some of the stars of the Drover soccer team and find out more about them.

RYAN MCENTEE

Position: GK

Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: “Force Field” McEntee

Major: Physical Education

Most Memorable Moment From Career At USAO: “Winning the conference tournament against Oklahoma City University and qualifying for Nationals.”

Favorite Soccer Player: “Henrik Larson. Although he is a striker and I am a goalkeeper, he is the greatest player to play in Scotland and a model professional.”

One Thing Opponents Should Fear The Most From Him: “The backup I receive from my defense. They don’t receive enough credit in my opinion and make my job a lot easier.”

Favorite Book: “The Body, written by Stephen King.”

Greatest Non-Sports Passion: “This may be the hardest question of all because when it comes to soccer, nothing even compares. It would have to be my family that goes along with soccer.”

Best Part Of Life In The USA: “The fact that you are immediately interesting to other Americans as you have an accent (Scottish) and are different in a good way.”

Ways Chickasha, OK Is Just Like Home: “Because there are seven other boys that live in the town that are from Scotland, making it more of a home than I ever thought it could be. “

Most Annoying Part Of Practice: “Waking up early, but nobody likes early rises I suppose. However, there is no aspect of training that I hate because I get to do what I love every day.”

Most Underrated Aspect Of Soccer: ” The Preparation that goes into every game. The hours and effort that go into training sessions every day is very important not only from the players but coaches also.”

Actor Who Should Play Coach Hampton In A Movie About Drovers Soccer: “Ed Harris.”

NIALL CRICK

Position: MF

Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: “NC Hammer”

Major: Communication

Most Memorable Moment From Career At USAO: “When we beat Oklahoma City at their place in my freshman year. They were ranked #2 in the nation and no one expected us to win.”

Favorite Soccer Player: “Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal.”

One Thing Opponents Should Fear The Most From Him: “My surprising aerial ability for only being 5 foot 7.”

Favorite Book: “Harry Potter – the whole series.”

Greatest Non-Sports Passion: “There isn’t much. To be honest my whole life revolves around sport but I would say I have a keen passion for history; learning and talking about it.”

Best Part Of Life In The USA: “I feel like life is more relaxed and day to day stuff gets done at a slower pace. That might just be because I’m a college student, though.”

Ways Chickasha, OK Is Just Like Home: “Because there are so many Scottish people here.”

Most Annoying Part Of Practice: “Have to be careful here. (Laughs) I would say wearing t-shirts that are XL all the time.”

Most Underrated Aspect Of Soccer: ” In the U.S. it’s definitely the technical skill level required to play the game. It’s so much harder to do something in a controlled fashion with your feet than it is with your hands. I don’t feel like many Americans realize that and they just want to see more points being scored.”

Actor Who Should Play Coach Hampton In A Movie About Drovers Soccer: ” A young Jack Nicholson maybe or Bruce Willis.”

NIKOLA CAKAREVIC

Position: F

Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: “Niiiiiiiiikolaaaaaaa”

Major: Business

Most Memorable Moment From Career At USAO: “Semifinal game against OCU in 2008! That was an unforgettable game … We won at OCU 2-1.”

Favorite Soccer Player: “Foreign player Zinedine Zidane and Serbian player Dejan Savicevic.”

One Thing Opponents Should Fear The Most From Him: “I am an unpredictable player. I can play great (for) 10 minutes then be quiet for the next 20 so they always have to watch me. Also I can score from any distance.”

Favorite Book: “Angels And Demons by Dan Brown.”

Greatest Non-Sports Passion: “I enjoy traveling the world! I have already visited 10 European countries and the USA, but I would like to visit more countries.”

Best Part Of Life In The USA: “This is a land of opportunities and you cannot find that anywhere else!”

Ways Chickasha, OK Is Just Like Home: “It is quiet and people are nice.”

Most Annoying Part Of Practice: “Extra fitness on the end of practice.”

Most Underrated Aspect Of Soccer: “People in the USA don’t have the history of soccer because you pay more attention to baseball and football. In Europe and the rest of the world soccer is the #1 sport!”

Actor Who Should Play Coach Hampton In A Movie About Drovers Soccer: “Christian Bale because he is impulsive and hungry for success!”

Well ,that about wraps it up. I hope my readers enjoyed getting acquainted with these 3 young men who have the college soccer world sitting up and taking notice. We’ll keep up with the Drovers as the post-season approaches.

Things I learned From This Interview: Chickasha, OK should be called “Scotland West”, Coach Hampton is impulsive and hungry for success, and defeating the Oklahoma City Stars in 2008 was the ultimate high for Drover soccer players.
