NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 10TH

THE MCMURRY WAR HAWKS RULE THE WORLD – NCAA Division 3’s MCMURRY WAR HAWKS defeated a team from two divisions higher yesterday, toppling 1AA’s UT-SAN ANTONIO ROADRUNNERS in a 24-21 Instant Classic. Now, it’s true that the Roadrunners are in their very first year of intercollegiate football, but they are still Division 1 with all the advantages that implies in the way of facilities and recruiting.

THE LANGSTON LIONS ALSO RULE THE WORLD … AGAIN – For the second week in a row the LANGSTON LIONS, from the NAIA, have taken down an upper division team. As with McMurry, they took down a 1AA team but did it in a rout. Langston (insert my usual joke that they should change their name to the Langston Hugheses here) handily defeated the TUSKEGEE GOLDEN TIGERS by a score of 33-19.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD – For the first time this season we have three teams from the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers playing giant-killer and defeating a team from a higher division. Add the NAIA’s PIKEVILLE BEARS to the mix. The Bears won a Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH

This is my usual Saturday post where I provide links to updating scoreboards for the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers. First, though, my quick takes on some of last night’s games:

The Maritime College Privateers, one of the coolest-named teams in sports, carved up the Western Connecticut Colonials last night. Maritime won by a score of 48-0, setting up this season’s first post-victory ritual of breaking a two-by four. Hey, it’s odd but memorable!

The Catholic Cardinals at the Gallaudet Bison wound up being the game of the night, with the Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 3RD: NAIA, NJCAA, D3 AND D2

The Langston Lions Rule The World – The NAIA’s Langston Lions ( who I always say should change their name to the Langston Hugheses … my fellow poetry geeks will get it) upset a team from TWO divisions higher. The Lions took down Division 1AA’s Arkansas- Pine Bluff Golden Lions in a 19-12 game for the ages … Honorable mention goes to the NAIA’s Azusa Pacific Cougars who took 1AA’s San Diego Toreros down to the wire (after defeating them last season) in a heartbreaking 42-40 outcome.

The Franklin Grizzlies Also Rule The World – D3’s Franklin Grizzlies also brought down a team two divisions higher. The Grizzlies beat the 1AA Valaparaiso Crusaders 49-35 on Valpo’s own field.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 3 – There were no upsets in the NAIA’s or D2’s Top 25 so we’ll jump straight to D3. The 4th ranked North Central Cardinals fell to the unranked Redlands Bulldogs in a 35-29 nailbiter … At number 10, the Coe Kohawks were defeated by the Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPTEMBER 3RD

Here is my weekly Saturday post providing links to updating scoreboards in the divisions of college football that Balladeer’s Blog covers. First, though, some quick comments about a few of last night’s games:

D2’s 6th- ranked  TAMK  Javelinas (the team that Hall of Famer Darrell Green played his college ball for)  picked up a road win last night with an authoritative 21-10 victory over the  Central Washington Wildcats.

The NAIA’s Mayville State Comets nearly pulled off an upset of a higher division team last night, but ultimately fell to the D2 Minnesota- Crookston Golden Eagles by a score of 31-29. With the loss the Comets are now 1-1 for the season.

In D3 football the Dartmouth Corsairs took down the Mt Ida Mustangs in a 24-21 Instant Classic of a game.

And now, links to each division’s scoreboards –

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 1ST’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES: NAIA, D2, D3 AND NJCAA

Last night started the second week of college football action (no matter what ESPN wants to pretend) and here is my latest take on some outcomes of note.

The Malone Pioneers Rule The World – The NAIA’s Malone Pioneers took down NCAA Division 2’s Tiffin Dragons 40-34 in Double Overtime, earning my usual headline when a team defeats a team from a higher division. To put this in context for newbies to lower division football this is like when a 1AA (FCS if you’re gutless) team upsets a 1A (FBS if you’re gutless) team … Honorable mention goes to D2’s 2nd ranked team, the Delta State Statesmen, who came within one point of toppling the 1AA Northwestern State Demons in a 24-23 nailbiter.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 2 – D2 was the only division in which ranked teams were upset last night. The 11th ranked California (PA) Vulcans fell at home to the 13th ranked St Cloud State Huskies in a 26-3 spanking … The unranked Pueblo Thunderwolves upset the Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPT 1ST – NAIA, NJCAA, D3 AND D2

Tonight all four of the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers will be playing games. Last Thursday through Saturday everybody but NCAA Division 3 started their football season (so ignore what ESPN says about tonight being the start of  the 2011 college football season. They always ignore the divisions they don’t have the television contracts for.) Here are links for updated scoreboards for tonight’s games by division:

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM AUGUST 27TH: NAIA, NJCAA AND D2

Sorry for the delay in getting this up but I was without internet access for awhile. But I know that’s a petty complaint considering how hard some places got hit by the hurricane. Anyway, D3 football doesn’t get started til next week so that’s why no D3 scores are mentioned this time.

Scares For Some Top-Ranked Teams – Thursday night the NJCAA’s number one team, Navarro College, needed overtime to defeat the third-ranked Butler (KS) Grizzlies and yesterday D2’s second-ranked team, the Delta State Statesmen, had to struggle to get past the ECSU Vikings in a 28-21 game that was sloppy but fun.

…And Don’t Let The Door Hit Your Butt On The Way Out – The Jamestown College Jimmies opened their 2011 season with an emotion-charged game against the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Hardrockers, who left the Dakota Athletic Conference after last year. The Jimmies already defended the DAC’s honor in last year’s season-ending Dac Bowl Event and didn’t miss a beat resuming their “who needs ya” lesson for the Hardrockers. This was a very tight game but Jamestown College won in overtime 23-20 on the Hardrockers’ own field.

Apache Dance – The Tyler Apaches and the Coffeyville Red Ravens played one of the Continue reading

VICTORY SPORTS NETWORK’S PRESEASON NAIA COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP 25 IS OUT!

The Saint Xavier Cougars are listed at Number 2 in this year’s VSN Preseason Top 25, but I have their logo pictured here because not only do these Cougars hail from Chicago, the land of Rich Koz (AKA Son of Svengoolie AKA just plain Svengoolie) but their head coach, Mike Feminis, makes a habit of showing odd B-movies on the team bus on road trips! That little nugget came out in Balladeer’s Blog’s interview with three Cougar stars last football season. Anyway, Continue reading

A QUICK Q and A WITH 3 SIOUX FALLS FOOTBALL STARS

Over the past few years in NAIA football it’s been the Sioux Falls Cougars’ world and everyone else is just part of their “win” column. They’ve won 3 of the last 4 National Championships and the 1 year they didn’t win they still made it all the way to the title game before falling. Not only that but they’re still ranked #1 in the nation and have got an NAIA record winning streak still going, a streak that now stands at 37 games in a row. The Cougars had their bye this week so it seemed a good time to subject a few of their star players to some of my probing, yet inane, questions. Not all of the players chose to answer every one of my eccentric queries, hence the differing number of replies.

POTENTIAL NAIA FOOTBALL HISTORY IN THE MAKING TODAY!

In a gridiron matchup that cannot be called anything but serendipitous, the 11th-ranked Missouri Valley College Vikings play the unranked William Jewell Cardinals today. The Vikings currently have 559 football wins, 2nd all-time in the NAIA. The team in the #1 spot has 560 wins. Guess who that team is. Yep, as proof that the football gods must love stat geeks the Vikings are playing the team whose record they are attempting to tie! YOU DON’T DARE MISS THIS GAME!

And here are the links to scoreboards for October 9th’s games in the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers:
