NAIA COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS SIGNED IN THE NFL

Recently I looked at NCAA Division 3 players signed to NFL teams. Now let’s take a look at the NAIA football players signed by NFL teams in this year’s odd, frenzied period of free agent signings.

The Chargers took Patrick Crayton from the NWOSU Rangers, the Bills took Michael Jasper from the Continue reading

LINDENWOOD NEWS NETWORK: WITH GUEST COMMENTATOR TIBBS

This time my guest commentator is Tibbs, a cat who belongs to one of my other sisters – Debbie. Tibbs wants equal time for cats after my sister Rosemary’s dog Bogie (named after Humphrey Bogart, not a golfing term) acted as a Guest Commentator a few weeks ago. Tibbs thinks she would make a great mascot for a feline-named sports team so to underline that fact she wanted to do her guest stint for the Lindenwood Lions. Tibbs’ comments do not necessarily reflect the views of Balladeer’s Blog.

Tibbs: In women’s ACHA ice hockey, Lindenwood will host the Robert Morris (IL) Eagles this weekend. The Eagles and the Lady Lions have won the last 6 ACHA Hockey Championships.  Personally I like to hunt Eagles down and then deposit them on my Mommy Debbie’s front doorstep, but she’s too uncivilized to appreciate this gesture.

Tibbs: The 6th-ranked Lions football team will be hosting the Culver-Stockton Wildcats this Saturday afternoon for Lindenwood’s Homecoming Game. Since both teams are named after cats I’m torn on this game and will probably just root for individual stats like I did last week when the Lions played Baker. Speaking of last week’s game, Lindenwood’s QB “Phootball” Philip Stabek (My uncle, the guy who usually writes this blog, is forcing me to use that lame nickname) set a school record with 6 touchdown passes in that 48-14 win. Since Culver-Stockton is winless at this point, the 5-1 Lions should have another huge win to please the Homecoming crowd.

Tibbs: The Lady Lions volleyball team is ranked #21, sports an 18-11 record and this weekend hosts the Lindenwood Invitational. Before that event they face the MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers and then in the Invitational will face the Avila Eagles, the Oklahoma City Stars and the Olivet Nazarene Tigers among others. I’m really going to “dig” this tournament! Get it? I “kill” me! Volleyball term jokes: I’ve never met anyone who DOESN’T love them!

TIBBS: The Lindenwood men’s soccer team is also ranked #21 and is off to a 9-3 start. This coming Saturday they play at the #14 Benedictine Ravens. Insert your own “Cat mascot devouring a bird mascot” joke here since I already used one above.

TIBBS: The men’s ice hockey team is still ranked #1 and is 5-1 so far in its non-conference slate. This week they travel to Indiana, whose team is currently 3-3. Last year the Lions crushed Indiana by scores of 12-0 and 9-1 so Lindenwood can definitely say “Hoosier” Daddy? to Indiana.

Well, that wraps up my turn as a guest commentator for my uncle. To tell the people at Lindenwood to just photoshop a lion’s mane on to my picture and use me as their new mascot click here: http://www.lindenwoodlions.com/

SOCCER POTPOURI

The Lindenwood Lions men’s soccer team upset the Top-ranked Lindsey-Wilson Blue Raiders by a score of 2-1. The Lions led 1-nil at half-time off a goal by Hannes Backstrom. Two minutes in to the 2nd half Blue Raiders player Carnell Learmond tied the game up but in the 74th minute Simon Harrsen scored the game-winner for Lindenwood.

The 8th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays women’s soccer team went into Wednesday night’s game against the top-ranked Messiah Falcons undefeated at 2-0, but unfortunately came out with a 2-1 loss. Messiah (Insert your own “Where’s your Messiah now?” joke here) scored their 1st goal agains the Blue Jays in the 38th minute when Lisa Wingard one-timed a goal past JHU‘s goaltender Kristen Redsun. That was the first goal the Blue Jays gave up this season after 3-nil and 5-nil victories in their 1st 2 games of the year.  Just 80 seconds into the 2nd half the Falcons made it a 2-nil game off a goal by Amanda Naeher.Just over 2 minutes later Sara Tankard cut the Falcons’ lead in half but it wasn’t quite enough.

In a week in which Saint Xavier Cougars goalie “Wild” Kyle Held was named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player Of The Week it seems appropriate that he should register his 2nd shutout of this young season. The Cougars won 2-nil against the Goshen Maple Leafs (You’re dying for a “Land’O’Goshen” joke but I’m not playing that game). Both goalies had rejected all shots on goal until the 80th minute when SXU’s Al Palar provided the 1st goal of the game. “Mighty” Matt Klancic provided an insurance goal 4 minutes later to improve the Cougars to 3-2 on the season.

Reece Harris, freshman goalie for the Park University Pirates men’s soccer team, notched his 2nd career win Wednesday night against the Lindenwood Lions by a score of 2-1. Harris blocked 7 shots and both Pirate goals were scored by striker Ramone Palmer, 1 of them off a pass from midfielder Simon Senfuka. LNN: LINDENWOOD NEWS NETWORK

"This is LNN"

When you’re a big-time, world-renowned blogger like myself, you get sports news releases in your e-mail in-box, along with the usual pro bono notifications that a bank in Nigeria needs your help in disbursing large amounts of money (easiest 2 million bucks I ever made!). Anyway, one of those releases included a veritable bonanza of information about the sports programs at Lindenwood University. Since at first glance it seemed like enough material to launch a sports network about the Lions I used that as my lame premise for this post.

*ITEM: LION-HEARTED  BILL BRITTON: HERO AT LARGE – July 26th – Bill Britton, an incoming football player for the Lions, along with his cousin Jeff, came across an overturned vehicle on Highway 100 in Missouri. Not only did they call 911 but when the vehicle burst into flames Britton, Jeff and 2 other people dragged the driver out of the vehicle to safety.  “I still do not know what to think about it,” said Britton, “…The flames were five foot high and you could hear the tires popping. It is cool though that we were in the right place to be able to help somebody out.”   In the tradition of Buford Pusser and Serpico some enterprising producer needs to turn this into a television series. Jeff would have his own spin-off series, so the show about Bill would have TV Guide entries like this: “Bill’s attempt to finish his term paper is interrupted when he is called upon to save the elderly patients at the nearby hospital from a dangerous gas leak.” or maybe “On his way to practice Bill becomes caught up in a Tri-State search for a missing toddler.” For the big season-ending clifff-hanger it could read “Bill’s budding romance with an exchange student involves him in a desperate attempt to save the staff at the International Space Station from certain doom.” I think we’ve got another Frank Merriwell on our hands here!

*ITEM: LINDENWOOD ATHLETICS TO BEGIN 2010-2011 SEASON – Following a hotly-contested vote the students and administration of Lindenwood University moved that it was, indeed, the 2010-2011 sports season.

*ITEM:  MORE THAN 10 LIONS INDICTED – July 30th – Okay, that was just my teaser headline to get attention. In reality this story is about former Lindenwood Lions individuals and teams being inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame. (Who doesn’t love play-on-word headlines? Well, besides the people who overreacted when I ran the headline “4 Dead In Local Pre-School” instead of “4 Deer In Local Preschool”. Some people just can’t take a joke!) Inductees will be: student athletes Dawn Cameron “Swayze”, softball; Jenifer “Leave off the second N for ‘Nice'” Dykes, women’s soccer; Matt “Johns” Hopkins, men’s golf; Debbie Johnson “Is Right!”, women’s soccer; Jason “Your-cek” Micek, men’s golf;  “Dangerous” Daniel Odom, men’s basketball; “Mighty”, Michelle Patrico, softball; and Katie “Killer K.P.” Pizzardi, women’s basketball.  Also being inducted are Fern Bittner, former Director of Horsemanship; Dr Harlen C Hunter, Meritorious Service; the 1977-78 Men’s Basketball Team; the 1999-2000 women’s basketball team; the 2004 men’s soccer team and oddly enough the 1988 Notre Dame football team. Weird. The 2010 Induction Ceremony will take place Homecoming Weekend Oct 15th-16th.

* ITEM: THURSDAY NIGHT MILESTONE – The first ever Thursday night game in Lindenwood Lions football history will take place September 2nd as the Lions welcome the Evangel University Crusaders.

*ITEM: BEDTIME FOR ZOMBO – July 14th -Former NHL Player Rick Zombo has taken over as Head Coach for the Lindenwood men’s ice hockey team. For the past 2 years Zombo has been the team’s  Top Assistant Coach and helped the Lions capture 2 straight National Championships for ice hockey. “With the increase in responsibility as head coach,” Zombo observed, ” my ambition is to make the program even stronger. We have a tremendous core of returning players that understand the difficulty of winning a title, but will cherish the process of continued success.”

To read the coach’s annoyed reply when I asked if he was related to the Zombo character that Louis Nye portrayed on an old episode of The Munsters click here: http://www.lindenwoodlions.com/
