TODAY’S MARQUIS MATCHUP AND SCOREBOARDS

The NAIA‘s Top-Ranked team, the University of Sioux Falls Cougars, host the fourth-ranked Morningside Mustangs in the Marquis Matchup of this Saturday. Both teams come into today’s game sporting 6-0 records, so the old cliche that “Someone’s 0 Will Go” certainly applies. Cougars stars like QB Jon “Jonny East” Eastman, RB Chevon “Fire” Walker, WR Jon “Mountain Lion” Ryan and K “Brassy” Braden Wieking will be in action as USF continues its quest to threepeat as National Champions. Kickoff is 6PM local time.

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 9TH’S GAMES

MVC VIKINGS TIE NAIA RECORD – As hyped here yesterday the 11th-ranked Missouri Valley College Vikings had a chance to tie the NAIA record for total football victories at 560 and, as luck would have it, were playing against the team that had a 1-win edge over them: the William Jewell Cardinals! As this “What are the chances?” game unfolded, the Vikings actually trailed at half-time 13-10 but went on to win by a score of 40-23. Congratulations to MVC and it will be interesting to watch the Vikings and Cardinals jockey to see who gets to hold the new record week by week.

Hurlin’ Hewitt Enters The Record Books – In a game played Friday night, Johns Hopkins Blue Jays QB Hurlin’ Hewitt Tomlin became the all-time wins leader for Blue Jays quarterbacks as JHU crushed the Dickinson Red Devils 44-10. Tomlin also had a personal best 4 td passes in the game  and threw for 271 yards. Next week the Blue Jays take it on the road against the 5-0 Ursinus Bears, who currently sit at the top of the Centennial Conference standings.

Top 25 Upsets – NAIA – Thursday night the unranked Georgetown (KY) Tigers pulled off an upset over the 25th-ranked Campbellsville Tigers 52-21 … In a minor upset the #9 St Francis (IN) Cougars defeated the 8th-ranked Walsh Cavaliers 20-14 … The 12th-ranked McKendree Bearcats were also upset, losing to the unranked St Francis (IL) Fighting Saints 28-24 in the final seconds, with last-second upsets being a Fighting Saints specialty of late … Both the other teams tied for 25th lost to unranked opponents: the Hastings Broncos fell to the Midland Lutheran Warriors 35-23, Midland’s 2nd straight win over a ranked team and the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves upset the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers for the Tigers’ 2nd straight loss to an unranked foe.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 3 – The #17 Eau Claire Blugolds got pummeled on the road by the unranked Platteville Pioneers 35-14 … The 19th-ranked Wabash Little Giants (Am I the only one who thinks they should be called the Wabash Cannonballs instead?) also lost on the road, to the Washington (MO) Bears 24-20 … Completing our Trifecta of ranked teams losing on the road to unranked foes are the St John’s Johnnies, who fell to the Bethel (MN) Royals in a 17-14 Instant Classic.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 2 – The 22nd ranked Winston-Salem State Rams, in their 1st year back in D2 after moving down from Division 1, suffered their 1st loss of the year to the St Augustine’s Falcons 40-35 … The #23 Tusculum Pioneers also fell at home to the Newberry Wolves in a 63-56 Mega-Shootout … As proof that “Rock beats Fighting Scots”, the 24th-ranked Edinboro Fighting Scots lost at The Rock of Slippery Rock 28-14 and the #25 CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves fell to the Colorado Mines Orediggers by a score of 19-16.

Webber International and Concordia (AL) Rule The World – Two NAIA teams logged wins over Division 2 opponents yesterday. The Webber International Warriors, 1 week after handing the Azusa Pacific Cougars their 1st loss of the year, brought down the UNC-Pembroke Braves, who were ranked #17 in the D2 Poll, by a score of 26-13. Meanwhile, the Concordia (AL) Hornets won on the road against D2’s Stillman (Yawn) Tigers in an 18-17 Instant Classic. Congratulations to the Warriors and the Hornets and here’s wishing that half the college teams called Tigers would be required to change  their names to something less over-used.

“At Least Put A Color In Front Of Tigers” Dept – D2’s 18th-ranked Tuskegee Golden Tigers were road warriors yesterday, traveling to take on the 20th-ranked Morehouse Maroon Tigers and pulling off a 31-15 win.

It’s A Cliche, But Someone’s “0” Will Go – The NAIA’s Top-Ranked Sioux Falls Cougars (raise your hand if you’re sick of me mentioning that they’re trying to Threepeat as National Champs) won handily yesterday, mauling the Briar Cliff Chargers 66-21. Meanwhile, 1 of the few teams to play USF tough in recent years, the 4th-ranked Morningside Mustangs, obliterated the Dordt Defenders by a score of 71-0. This means both teams go in to next week’s meeting at USF with 6-0 records, adding even extra spice to the matchup in what is sure to be a memorable Victory Sports Network Game Of The Week. “Getcher popcorn ready” as a certain locker-room wrecking wide receiver once said.

We Went To A Football Game And A Baseball Game Broke Out- This week’s entry for this category would be the game between the Shenandoah Hornets and the Maryville Scots, both from D3. The Hornets won 7-6 in a game where Bud Selig for once didn’t have to worry about bad umpiring.

Lindsey Wilson College Wins Again – Like the Notre Dame College Falcons, the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders are in their 1st year of intercollegiate football. Yesterday the Blue Raiders got their 2nd win  by defeating the Pikeville Bears in an offensive supernova, 59-52.

Bearcats Tie Their Own Record – The Northwest Missouri Bearcats, ranked #6 in the D2 Polls, tied their own record for consecutive conference wins at 41 by defeating the Missouri Southern Lions 49-21. Coach Tjeerdsma’s boys try to set a new record next week against the Emporia State Hornets.

“Our Division Can Beat Up Your Division” Dept – In this week’s round in the rivalry between the NAIA and NCAA Division 3 things ended in a stalemate. The NAIA’s Southern Virginia Knights kicked around D3’s Guilford Quakers 36-21 but then the Lewis And Clark Pioneers from D3 evened things up by defeating  the NAIA’s Menlo Oaks 31-10.

How Long, Oh Lord, How Long? – The Marathon Game Of The Week Award goes to the matchup between the Methodist Monarchs and the Ferrum Panthers. The game wound up as a 51-45 win for the Panthers in Triple Overtime.

Generals Exterminate The Wasps – Insert your own Dalek joke here following that title. The Washington and Lee Generals defeated 1 of the teams that has given them the most trouble over the years, the Emory and Henry Wasps, 45-24. The Generals had 2 backs run for over 100 yds, Luke “The Lambaster” Heinsohn (130 yds; 1 TD) and “Bullet” Brett Murray (121 yds; 2 TD) and a 3rd, Harrison Hudson, “The Hawk” himself, had 95 yds. QB Charlie Westfal, Official Balladeer’s Blog nickname, “The New Canaan Nuke”, was 6 of 9 for 66 yds and 2 TD and added 65 yds and another TD with his legs. (His kidneys had just 11 yds rushing) Washington and Lee is 2-0 in conference play and still hoping to win their 1st Old Dominion Athletic Conference title since 2006. The Generals get to try exterminating another insect team next week as they face the RandolphMacon Yellow Jackets.

We Went To A Football Game And A Basketball Game Broke Out – With Midnight Madness just around the corner, this category doesn’t seem as unusual as in past weeks. This week’s entry is the 84-55 win the Union Bulldogs had over the Bethel (TN) Wildcats.

COLLEGE GRIDIRON PREVIEW FOR THIS WEEKEND

The NAIA’s Top-Ranked Sioux Falls Cougars are 5-0 and going on the road to take on the Briar Cliff Chargers.  The Chargers are coming off their 17-7 win over the Dordt Defenders but are 2-3 overall. Cougars receiver Jon “Mountain Lion” Ryan was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Player Of The Week on offense and must be champing at the bit to get his hands on the ball again this week, considering the fact that last year USF beat the Chargers 41-8. Will the Cougars move to 6-0, or will Briar Cliff catch them looking ahead to next  Saturday’s game  against the Morningside Mustangs, one of USF’s toughest foes of late? Plus there’s the continuing drama of the Cougars trying to threepeat as NAIA football champs!

The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays take the field Friday night, October 8th, hosting the Dickinson Red Devils. The Blue Jays will be trying to put last week’s game, in which their gutsy comeback attempt versus the Muhlenberg Mules fell short, 30-27, behind them. Some individual Blue Jays will also be playing for the record books. QB “Hurlin'” Hewitt Tomlin will have his 2nd try at becoming the all-time wins leader for a Johns Hopkins starter. Meanwhile, WR Tucker “The Trapster” Michels needs 114 more receiving yards to become the 7th Blue Jay to reach 2,000.

And speaking of records and the like, the 6th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats can match their 41-game conference winning streak with a win Saturday evening against the Missouri Southern Lions. The Bearcats have won 15 straight against the Lions and lead the overall series 17-4. Northwest comes in with a 3-1 record, Southern with a 2-3 record. The conference the 2 play in is the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

A week after making Head Coach Frank Miriello the winningest coach in program history, the Washington and Lee Generals take on the Emory and Henry Wasps. The Generals are hoping to improve to 3-2, but the Wasps have been a tough hive to crack for the Washington and Lee football team. Emory and Henry leads the all-time series 28-11 and have won the last 2 in a row including last year’s 23-16 Instant Classic in Emory. Just as Rutgers is remembered as the site of the 1st ever college football game in 1869,  Washington and Lee is remembered for playing the Virginia Military Institute in the 1st college football game played in the south, way back in 1873.

The 2-2 Wingate Bulldogs take on the 3-2 Carson-Newman (Insert your own “Hello Newman” joke here) Eagles tomorrow. Bulldogs Head Coach Joe Reich (Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: “Joe”) will be playing gridiron chess against the Dean of South Atlantic Conference coaches, Ken Sparks. Look for incumbent SAC Special Teams Player Of The Week Timmy Rogers (Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: “Tigershark”) to have another big game.

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 2ND’S ACTION

Top 25 Upsets – NAIA – The 14th-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars suffered their 1st loss of the season on the road against the Webber International Warriors 13-10. The Cougars are now 4-1 and the Warriors are hoping to be ranked in the next poll…The #21 Dakota Wesleyan Tigers were upset by the unranked Midland Lutheran Warriors 21-19. All in all it was a good day to be an unranked team called the Warriors taking on a ranked foe with a feline mascot.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 3 – Just one very minor upset in the rankings on Saturday as the #16 Linfield Wildcats defeated the #15 Willamette Bearcats in a 35-7 beatdown.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 2 – The 16th-ranked Edinboro Scots were hammered at home 18-0 by the unranked IUP Crimson Hawks…The #13 Tusculum Pioneers fell on the road to the unranked Mars Hill Lions 45-39 and completing our hat-trick of unranked D2 teams beating ranked opponents are the Humboldt State Lumberjacks who hosted the 12th-ranked Central Washington Wildcats in a 25-24 upset.

The Notre Dame Falcons And NWOSU Rangers Rule The World – The NAIA’s Notre Dame College Falcons are only in their 1st year of intercollegiate football and this week logged their 1st upset of a higher-division team, and a road upset at that! They beat NCAA Division 2’s Central State Marauders 16-13 in an Instant Classic. The NW Oklahoma State Rangers meanwhile had a much easier win in another NAIA upset of a D2 team. The Rangers crushed the Missouri S&T Miners 43-14 in their own house.

“It’s Not News If A House Isn’t On Fire” Dept – The Top-ranked teams in the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers all won big yesterday. In the NAIA the Sioux Falls Cougars had their 1st shutout of the year as they rolled over the NWU  Prairie Wolves by a score of 44-0. The Cougars are 5-0 and continuing their quest to threepeat as National Champs in football…In D3 the Whitewater Warhawks crushed the Platteville Pioneers 49-17. D3’s 2nd-ranked Mt Union Purple Raiders also won big over the 8th-ranked Ohio Northern Polar Bears 27-0.The possibility for a 6th straight Warhawks vs Purple Raiders clash for the D3 title is still very much alive…D 2’s MN-Duluth Bulldogs rolled on the road, eviscerating the MSU-Moorhead Dragons by a score of 56-7.

Reach For The Brass Lantern – The Cumberlands Patriots get to keep the Brass Lantern for the 5th straight year following a win over the Union Bulldogs (Somewhere the spirit of Joe Hill is weeping) The Brass Lantern is the trophy those 2 intense rivals play for, and this game will be examined more closely in my next Nuggets entry.

Whose Turn Was It To Beat The Clan? – The Dixie State Red Storm became the latest American team to defeat the Simon Fraser Clan. The Red Storm won in a 28-21 Instant Classic in the Clan’s back yard. Simon Fraser is 1 of the Canadian schools that play in the USA‘s lower divisions.

Bear Market – The Ursinus Bears are off to the quietest 5-0 start I’ve ever seen. Yesterday they stayed perfect by winning at the Gettysburg Bullets 49-39. Their combination of a perfectly apt nickname and really cool helmets have always made them a Balladeer’s Blog favorite!

We Went To A Football Game And A Baseball Game Broke Out –  This week’s entry is the Muskingum Muskies’ 3-0 win over the Wilmington Quakers. If this season provides us with a 2-nothing game I plan to do a feature article on it! I’m kidding.

They Shoot Football Players, Don’t They? – This week’s Marathon Game Award goes to the Triple Overtime Instant Classic between the CW Post Pioneers and the West Chester Golden Rams. The Pioneers won by a score of 39-37.

“Our Division Can Beat Up Your Division” Dept – In the ongoing rivalry between the NAIA and NCAA Division 3 there was only 1 game yesterday. D3’s Whitworth Pirates defeated the Menlo Oaks 20-7.

THE COOLEST HELMET IN THE ATLANTIC CENTRAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE

Team: NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS

Location: Newport News, VA

Division: NCAA Division 3

Site: http://www.gobuilders.com/landing/index

Comment: It’s the return of the Coolest Helmet feature! NNAS has one of the most eye-catching helmets in D3. In fact when they wear their maroon jerseys and the gold pants their entire uniform looks 1A-caliber! The Builders’ motto is “We build great ships: Craftmanship … Scholarship … Leadership” If you’re wondering why, if they build great ships, they’re not called the Shipbuilders instead, well, just say it out loud a few times and you’ll see the potential minefield they’re avoiding.

THE LEADER BOARD

As we rapidly approach the end of September let’s take a look at the Top 3 teams in the polls.

FOOTBALL

NAIA

1. SIOUX FALLS COUGARS – (4-0)  As they prepare to leave the NAIA the Cougars are hoping to go out in style – as Threepeat Champions in football. All eyes are on the Cougars and sports historians are waiting to see how this season ends.

2. CARROLL (MT) FIGHTING SAINTS – (4-0) The Halos move up to the # 2 spot vacated by the Lindenwood Lions, who were upset by the MNU Pioneers. Having beaten their arch-rivals the Montana Tech Orediggers for the move up must be especially sweet.

3. SAINT XAVIER COUGARS – (5-0) Fun fact: In all sports in the NAIA approximately 19 teams in the Top 25 are called the Cougars! (I’m kidding!) SXU has reached the 3-spot for the 1st time since 2007 led by the superheroics of QB Anthony “Crop-Man” Kropp and WR Mike “M Squared” Maher who leads ALL divisions in scoring by the way! Want to see how famous these 2 have become? Google Anthony “Crop-Man” Kropp, and then Mike “M Squared” Maher!

D3

1. UW-WHITEWATER WARHAWKS – (3-0) In D3 football our Top 2 teams have been sharing the National Championship for the past 5 years in a row. Yes, since 2005 the D3 title game has been played between the Warhawks and our # 2 team. Some love that fact, some hate it and others just say if the other teams don’t like it they can rise up and beat 1 of them in the playoffs.

2. MT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS – (3-0) Even before the Purple Raiders and the Warhawks started monopolizing the D3 Championship the Purple Raiders were an established dynasty and were practically a fixture in the title matchup. Will it be 6 in a row between our Top 2 teams? Stay tuned!

3. WESLEY WOLVERINES – (4-0) Watch out for these Wolverines (Team slogan: “100% Rich Rodriguez-Free!”) who have got to be sick of playing 3rd fiddle to the Warhawks and Purple Raiders. Wesley will be “sneaking around the chicken coop” as Lee Corso says and are many people’s pick to upset our Top 2 if anyone can.

D2

1. MN-DULUTH BULLDOGS – (4-0) UMD won the 2008 D2 National Championship and are itching to wear the crown again. With the Grand Valley State Lakers out of the top spot the Bulldogs are riding high at least until the playoffs roll around. That’s right, fans of 1A football. In the divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog they settle it on the field!

2. GVSU LAKERS – (4-0) Speak of the devils! Even before their Brian Kelly days the Lakers were perennial contenders in D2, piling up a slew of Championships. They’re likely to use their recent fall from the top spot as motivation to win big the rest of the way rather than simply fume over it.

3. NORTH ALABAMA LIONS – (4-0) They’ve had THE Terry Bowden coaching them for the last few years, they’ve got the coolest helmets out of the Top 3 teams in D2 and they play in the Gulf South Conference, which is often called “The SEC of D2 football”. Well, at least until the Arkansas teams bolt the conference after the end of this season.

VOLLEYBALL

NAIA

1. FRESNO PACIFIC SUNBIRDS – (14-0) It’s not true that the Sunbirds haven’t lost a match since the Eisenhower Administration, it just seems that way. (It was really during Reagan’s 2nd term) These ladies are trying for 4 National Championships in a row! Will they make it? Will they actually LOSE a game at some point? Keep checking back to find out!

2. LEE FLAMES – (14-0) The Flames move up from the 3-spot last week. You almost wish the playoffs would start this week so that the Sunbirds and the Flames could meet each other with no losses, winner take all. You can bet the Flames will try to be the closest thing to a rival that Fresno Pacific has yet had!

3. BIOLA EAGLES – (12-4) The Eagles flew all the way up from #9 leapfrogging still-undefeated teams like the Red Raiders and the Scorpions. Like our #1 team Biola plays in the Golden State Athletic Conference, for my money the toughest volleyball conference in the NAIA. How tough? So tough that Biola is 4th in the conference race, yet 3rd in the national rankings!

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM SEPT 25TH’S ACTION

“Win One For Ransburg” – The NAIA’s 6th-ranked MNU Pioneers upset the #2 Lindenwood Lions 26-20. Winning QB Sean Ransburg wrote himself into the pages of college football lore with a well-placed remark toward the end of the game. Clinging to their 6-point lead the Pioneers needed to burn up the remaining 2:37 on the game clock. Picking up 2 first downs would do the trick and as Ransburg reported this moment with his teammates, “I looked into their eyes and told them to tell me how bad they wanted this.”  I held a seance to find out how the late Howard Cosell would have described what Ransburg did next and he said “With his troops thus inspired, this latter-day Napoleon of the gridiron turned Pioneer Stadium into his own version of the battlefied of Marengo. A 26-yard completion to tight end Juan Redmon on 3rd and 8 from the Lindenwood  43  gave the battle-hardened MNU team a 1st down and with it the tactical high ground to ensure a victory.” Maybe I should have conjured up someone a little more contemporary instead.

Top 25 Upsets – In NCAA Division 3 the 9th-ranked Coe Kohawks upset the #7 Central Dutch 37-28; in Division 2 action #13, the West Liberty Hilltoppers fell at home to Continue reading

THE LEADING SCORER FOR ALL COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYS IN THE NAIA

SXU's Mike Maher Official Balladeer's Blog nickname: "M Squared"

Let’s get to the bottom of the latest sports scandal: a college football player with no arrest record leads the entire nation in scoring! Mike Maher, better known to my readers as “M Squared” in stories about the Saint Xavier Cougars leads all college scoring. The following courtesy of the SXU Sports Information Department:

CHICAGO – If asked to guess where college football’s top scorer is playing this season, most fans and followers would likely choose a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) school or maybe even a NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program with a rich history of football success.  However, the real answer lies at a small NAIA institution nestled in the south suburbs of Chicago.  Saint Xavier University senior wide receiver Mike Maher (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic) has posted 78 points over four games this season behind 13 touchdowns (10 receptions, three kick returns).  The next highest scorer is NCAA Division II University of Minnesota-Duluth’s senior running back Isaac Odim, who has tallied 60 points (10 TDs) over three games.

In terms of scoring average, Maher ranks third (19.5 points per game) in all of college football (all divisions, including junior college) behind NCAA Division III Thomas More College’s (Ky.) freshman running back Domonique Hayden with 54 points over two games (27.0 points per game) and Odim (20.0 ppg).  Maher has had the start to his senior season that every college student-athlete dreams about.  He currently has 31 receptions for 508 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns (three off kick returns).  The 5-10, 185-pound speedster has also returned either a kickoff or a punt for a score in each of his last three games and, most importantly, his team is off to a 4-0 start and ranked No. 4 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Football Coaches’ Poll.  Maher’s 508 receiving yards this fall currently ranks him No. 2 among all college football institutions in total receiving yards behind only NCAA Division III Wittenberg University (Ohio) junior wideout Josh McKee.  McKee has 514 receiving yards in three games after Saturday’s big game that saw him finish with 318 yards and five touchdowns in a 37-7 win over Washington-St. Louis (Mo.).

“Mike is an absolutely dominant player at our level,” said SXU football coach Mike Feminis.  “In my mind, he’s a Division I-type caliber athlete who, luckily for us, slipped through the cracks.  We give a “Play of the Day” award after each game and we might as well rename it the “Maher Play of the Day,” because he wins it just about every week.  Mike’s a human highlight reel, but what makes him so special is his incredible work ethic and desire to be successful.  The only negative about Mike is that he’s too hard on himself.  He hates to fail.  Every coach uses the phrase, ‘play every play like it’s your last.’  That’s Mike Maher in a nutshell.”

Maher will get the chance to add to his scoring total on Saturday, September 25, when the Cougars head to Quincy, Ill., to take on Quincy University (Ill.) in a Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover match-up.  The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM SEPT 18TH’S GAMES

Top 25 Upsets – Let’s take this division by division. Our New Kids On The Block are the D2 teams so starting with them the 12th-ranked Tuskegee Golden Tigers got spanked by the unranked Albany (GA) State Golden Rams 34-6. *** The #22 Delta State Statesmen  continued to be dream-wreckers for the 17th-ranked Valdosta State Blazers, who lost at home to the Statesmen in a 27-23 instant classic.***In addition to Tuskegee, other ranked teams in D2 losing to unranked opponents were the 15th-ranked UNC-Pembroke Braves, who fell on the road to the Wingate Bulldogs 28-23 and the #19 Winona State Warriors who lost at the St Cloud Huskies 31-26. *************In the NAIA the biggest upset among the ranked teams came when the #16 Cumberlands Patriots got beaten by the unranked and previously winless Georgetown (KY) Tigers by a score of 58-40! The only other Top 25 upset in NAIA was a milder one – the 7th-ranked Ottawa (KS) Braves fell to the 9th-ranked McPherson Bulldogs 56-24.*********In D3 the only upset among the ranked teams was the 15th-ranked Cal Lutheran Kingsmen’s road loss to the unranked Pacific Lutheran Lutes 35-21.

Crop-Man ForeverSt Xavier Cougars’ outstanding quarterback, Anthony “Crop-Man” Kropp was 19 of 21 for 263 yards and 6 touchdowns as SXU trounced the Olivet Nazarene Tigers 56-17. Kropp’s teammate, “M Squared” himself, wide receiver Mike Maher, had 230 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns, 1 off a punt return. The defense proved just as super-powered as Kropp and Maher, recording 11 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 3 interceptions and a fumble. To read Crop-Man: Origins (with a teaser about M Squared)  click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/07/22/saint-xavier-cougars-quarterback-anthony-kropp-joins-new-superhero-team/

The Lambuth Eagles Rule The World Again! – Last Saturday the NAIA’s Lambuth Eagles defeated Division 1AA’s Georgia State Panthers (I’m such a rebel for continuing to say 1A and 1AA) and yesterday they upset Division 2’s 13th-ranked West Alabama Tigers in a 14-13 nail-biter. Rumor has it Lambuth is targeting 1A’s Michigan Wolverines next! (I’m kidding!)

Comeback Cougars – The St Francis (IN) Cougars, ranked 11th in the NAIA poll (and 1 of 14 teams called Cougars in the Top 25) trailed the St Ambrose Fighting Bees 20-9 going into the 4th quarter, but then scored 22 unanswered points to emerge with a 31-20 win.

How Long Has This Been Going On? – This week’s award for the Marathon Game goes to the D3 matchup between the LaGrange Panthers and the Maryville (TN) Scots. The Scots won 20-17 in 3 Overtimes.

Point Of Pride – Division 3’s UW Stevens Point Pointers upset Division 2’s Missouri S&T Miners by a score of 29-10. The Pointers were led by Mike Griffin, who rushed for 138 yards and by stellar play on the defensive side of the ball.

We Went To A Football Game And A Baseball Game Broke Out – This week’s game that fits this category was the 7-3 game between the Midland Lutheran Warriors who won out over the Concordia (NE) Bulldogs in a textbook example of a defensive struggle.

We Went To A Football Game And A Basketball Game Broke Out – The 20th-ranked William Penn Statesmen beat out the Quincy Hawks 67-58. Statesmen fullback Shawn Davis ran for 166 yards and 4 touchdowns in the game.

Team To Keep A Closer Eye On – The #17 Benedictine Ravens defeated the Central Methodist Eagles 38-14. The Ravens are 3-0 under the leadership of senior QB Ryan Kelly and you can look for them to move up in the rankings.

“Our Division Can Beat Up Your Division” Dept – Let’s take a look at how this week’s games between NAIA and NCAA Division 3 teams went.  Winners on the NAIA side were: the 19th-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars, who defeated the Whittier Poets 46-21; the Southern Virginia Knights beat the Ferrum Panthers in their own house 20-17 and the Malone Pioneers, who crushed the Anna Maria Amcats 69-0.  D3’s winners were: the Willamette Bearcats, who defeated the Southern Oregon Raiders 42-24; the top-ranked Whitewater Warhawks beat the Campbellsville Tigers 37-7; the Emory and Henry Wasps over the UVA-Wise Highland Cavaliers 20-10 and the Huntingdon Hawks  who manhandled the Faulkner Eagles 42-10.

Under The Radar Instant Classics – If you’re as into college football as I am, these are some games you may want to catch in archived video or audio form. You can check the scores in my Saturday Scoreboard but to avoid spoiling the outcomes for people who will be checking them out I’m leaving out the scores in this section: the Millersville Marauders hosting the Gannon Golden Knights; the JC Smith Golden Bulls hosting the Brevard Tornadoes; the Upper Iowa Peacocks taking on the MSU-Moorhead Dragons; the Lincoln Blue Tigers hosting the Panhandle State Aggies; the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers at the VCS Vikings; the Jamestown Jimmies hosting the Black Hills State Yellowjackets; the Newport News Apprentice School Builders hosting the Greensboro Pride; and the Christopher Newport Captains at the Frostburg State Bobcats.

NOTEWORTHY RESULTS FROM SEPT 11TH’S ACTION

Top 25 Upsets – Depending which side of the upset you were on it wasn’t always a great day to be a ranked team in the NAIA and D3. The Linfield Wildcats, D3’s 4th-ranked team, lost to the #25 Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, 47-42. If only the Kingsmen were still sporting their cool helmets instead of these bland ones with just lettering it would really have been a great day for their fans…The 9th-ranked St John’s Johnnies fell to the unranked Eau Claire Blugolds 23-20. After being on the losing end of an epic tussle last year Todd Glaser’s boys emerged with a win this time around…In what was just barely an upset in the rankings #14, the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys won a 31-22 game with the 13th-ranked Willamette Bearcats…Over in the NAIA, the 13th spot in the rankings was equally unlucky with the Hastings Broncos losing at home to the 23rd-ranked Northwestern (IA) Red Raiders, 24-10. As usual Great Plains Athletic Conference teams are beating up on each other…The 8th-ranked McKendree Bearcats suffered a road loss to the unranked Marian Knights in a 45-12 beat-down…The #18 Campbellsville Tigers lost at the unranked Cumberland Bulldogs, who were obviously inspired by Ron Pavan’s participation in Sherry’s Run Day, 33-21… The Grand View Vikings, at # 20, also lost a road game to an unranked opponent, the St Francis (IL) Fighting Saints, by a score of 17-10, and the 22nd-ranked Taylor Trojans were upset at home by the William Penn Statesmen in a 44-19 shocker that nobody outside the WP locker room saw coming.

The Lambuth Eagles And The Franklin Grizzlies Rule The World – Last Saturday the Azusa Pacific Cougars defeated the 1AA San Diego Toreros. Yesterday the NAIA’s Lambuth Eagles defeated the 1AA Georgia State Panthers 23-14. The Panthers may be in their 1st year of playing football, but they are Division 1 with all the money and facilities that suggests, so this is another David and Goliath story for the ages. D3’s Franklin Grizzlies, who just barely missed the cut in my list of The 20 Coolest Football Helmets In NCAA Division 3, thrashed 1AA’s Valparaiso Crusaders 42-7, treating Valpo like Simon Bar Sinister to their Underdog.

Not-So-Blue Raiders – Like the Notre Dame College Falcons last weekend it only took the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders 2 games to get the 1st ever win in their new football program’s history! They beat up on the hapless Southern Virginia Knights, 44-3. The Blue Raiders had an extended audience for their historic moment since the matchup was the Victory Sports Network’s Game Of The Week yesterday. For archived views of all VSN games from this season go to http://www.livestream.com/victorysports

S.A.M. – Service Academy Mania – It doesn’t get anywhere near the press of Army vs Navy, but the Merchant Marine Academy Mariners and the Coast Guard Academy Bears have an intense rivalry. The Bears walked away with bragging rights following an emotion-charged 10-8 victory.

Hands Across The Border – The Southern Oregon Raiders traveled to Burnham, British Columbia to play the Simon Fraser Clan, one of the Canadian teams who play in the USA‘s lower divisions for collegiate athletics. The Raiders came out with a 31-18 win, becoming the 2nd Oregon team to recently beat up on the Clan, who also lost to D2’s Western Oregon Wolves 38-0.

We Went To A Football Game And A Baseball Game Broke Out – Yesterday’s game that fits this feature was the 6-3 win by the Rensselaer Engineers over the Endicott Gulls. It’s always noteworthy when just 1 touchdown and successful conversion attempt would have let you emerge with a victory.

We Went To A Football Game And Half A Basketball Game Broke Out – The NAIA’s 10th-ranked Missouri Valley College Vikings crushed the Culver Stockton Wildcats 70-0 on Saturday! This lopsided victory was  the theme of the day for MVC sports as the Women’s Soccer team routed the Tabor College Bluejays 7-0 and the Men’s Soccer team took it to Tabor 9-2. Who would have thought the football team would give up fewer points than the Men’s Soccer team on a given day?

“My Division Can Beat Up Your Division” Department – Balladeer’s Blog has made several references to the passionate rivalry that exists between NAIA schools and NCAA Division 3 schools. To dispassionate outsiders they seem equal in athletic prowess but never to their partisans. NAIA teams had a 5 games to 4 edge in inter-divisional contests coming into this weekend but wound up on the losing side of some thumpings this time around, despite a few wins here and there…D3’s Top-Ranked Whitewater Warhawks dismembered the Dakota State Trojans 70-7. I understand the Warhawks just scored again a few minutes ago…Here are a few more D3 wins over the NAIA: the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers topped the Valley City State Vikings 42-0; the McMurry “No Nicknames” (I’m serious) crushed the Texas College Steers 64-0; the Coe Kohawks beat the Olivet Nazarene Tigers 45-7; the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets slammed the SWAG Lions 32-7; the Birmingham-Southern Panthers up-ended the Faulkner Eagles 52-16 and the Buena Vista Beavers defeated the Peru State Bobcats 27-7. NAIA teams who made a fight out of it but fell short were the Jamestown Jimmies, who fell to the Stout Blue Devils 27-24 and the ever-tough Belhaven Blazers lost to D3’s 21st-ranked Mississippi College Choctaws, 21-14. NAIA teams who came out with a win were the Menlo Oaks, who defeated the Chapman Panthers 21-10 and the Azusa Pacific Cougars, who lambasted the La Verne Leopards 59-14.

Other Thoughts – The Washington and Lee Generals got their season back on the right track by opening up a can on the Sewanee Tigers, walking away with a tidy 48-17 win. Washington and Lee promised to stop scoring if Sewanee  would stop talking about their “most wins within a few days of each other” road trip from way back when. (Just kidding! I love that kind of college football lore!) The Generals are now 1-1 and next face the Averett Cougars on Sept 25th***The Saint Ambrose University Fighting Bees (love that name!) improved to 2-0 with a 28-7 win over the Malone Pioneers. This bizarre turnover-happy game was tied 7-7 at halftime but under the sure leadership of QB “Dangerous” Danny Tharp the Fighting Bees took control in the 3rd quarter***The Ursinus Bears snuck by the Franklin and Marshall Diplomats 10-7 in a game with huge implications for the Centennial Conference race.  Ursinus trailed 7-3 at halftime and neither defense blinked in the 2nd half until Bears QB “Joltin'” Justin  Decristofaro hit Nick “Nicky G” Giarrantano with a 22 yd touchdown pass with just over 6 minutes left***Another big win for the Saint Xavier Cougars and another record-setting performance for wide receiver Mike “M Squared” Maher. In the 62-6 smothering of the Trinity Intnl Trojans Maher become SXU’s all-time leading receiver with 258 catches. Cougars quarterback Anthony “Crop-Man” Kropp was 15 of 22 for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns. For the full story on Kropp’s superhero persona Crop-Man (which includes foreshadowing of the star performances by M Squared), click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/07/22/saint-xavier-cougars-quarterback-anthony-kropp-joins-new-superhero-team/

Under The Radar Instant Classics – Yesterday’s crop of unheralded matchups that provided little bits of Pigskin Heaven were: the Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets over the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays 41-37; the Wabash Little Giants over the Wooster Scots 21-17; the Carthage Red Men over the Lakeland Muskies in Overtime 35-34; the LaGrange Panthers over the Millsaps Majors 27-21, also in Overtime; the Methodist Monarchs downing the Guilford Quakers 26-21; the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes over the Tabor Bluejays 23-20; the Montana Tech Orediggers beating the Montana StateNorthern Lights 17-13 and the Rocky Mountain Battlin’ Bears over the Montana-Western Bulldogs 33-31. Archived video or audio broadcasts would be well worth your time!
