*** Adrian “The Guz” Guzman, junior midfielder for the Saint Xavier University Cougars scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Al Palar in a 1-nil victory over the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. The goal came in the 75th minute of a game which saw both teams generate 5 shots on goal apiece. SXU’s freshman goalie “Wild” Kyle Held had five saves in his first collegiate shutout. The Cougars are now 2-2-0 overall with their next action coming Sept 8th against the Goshen Maple Leafs.
***Last season the Carleton Knights women’s soccer team became the first 4-seed to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and as the ladies get ready for this season here’s a quick rundown of their personnel: As always here at Balladeer’s Blog all nicknames are purely my own demented creation and have never seriously been applied to the players to the best of my knowledge.) “Tricky” Niki Tomita, who had a team-high 12 goals last year despite not joining the roster until October following injuries to teammates; Rachel “Ra-Fo” Foran, who anchors the stingy Knights defense, which was 2nd in the Conference last year; “Able” Abby Wills, a midfielder who is always on the spot for a pass in a crucial situation and Kate “The Keeper” Trenerry, Carleton’s goalkeeper, who allowed just 4 goals in her final 7 games last season.
***Ashley “Stonewall” Shugar, goalkeeper for the Saint Xavier Cougars women’s soccer team, has been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player Of The Week. Shugar, a junior, had 15 saves and a shutout, earning her the honor.
