LINDENWOOD NEWS NETWORK: WITH GUEST COMMENTATOR TIBBS

This time my guest commentator is Tibbs, a cat who belongs to one of my other sisters – Debbie. Tibbs wants equal time for cats after my sister Rosemary’s dog Bogie (named after Humphrey Bogart, not a golfing term) acted as a Guest Commentator a few weeks ago. Tibbs thinks she would make a great mascot for a feline-named sports team so to underline that fact she wanted to do her guest stint for the Lindenwood Lions. Tibbs’ comments do not necessarily reflect the views of Balladeer’s Blog.

Tibbs: In women’s ACHA ice hockey, Lindenwood will host the Robert Morris (IL) Eagles this weekend. The Eagles and the Lady Lions have won the last 6 ACHA Hockey Championships.  Personally I like to hunt Eagles down and then deposit them on my Mommy Debbie’s front doorstep, but she’s too uncivilized to appreciate this gesture.

Tibbs: The 6th-ranked Lions football team will be hosting the Culver-Stockton Wildcats this Saturday afternoon for Lindenwood’s Homecoming Game. Since both teams are named after cats I’m torn on this game and will probably just root for individual stats like I did last week when the Lions played Baker. Speaking of last week’s game, Lindenwood’s QB “Phootball” Philip Stabek (My uncle, the guy who usually writes this blog, is forcing me to use that lame nickname) set a school record with 6 touchdown passes in that 48-14 win. Since Culver-Stockton is winless at this point, the 5-1 Lions should have another huge win to please the Homecoming crowd.

Tibbs: The Lady Lions volleyball team is ranked #21, sports an 18-11 record and this weekend hosts the Lindenwood Invitational. Before that event they face the MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers and then in the Invitational will face the Avila Eagles, the Oklahoma City Stars and the Olivet Nazarene Tigers among others. I’m really going to “dig” this tournament! Get it? I “kill” me! Volleyball term jokes: I’ve never met anyone who DOESN’T love them!

TIBBS: The Lindenwood men’s soccer team is also ranked #21 and is off to a 9-3 start. This coming Saturday they play at the #14 Benedictine Ravens. Insert your own “Cat mascot devouring a bird mascot” joke here since I already used one above.

TIBBS: The men’s ice hockey team is still ranked #1 and is 5-1 so far in its non-conference slate. This week they travel to Indiana, whose team is currently 3-3. Last year the Lions crushed Indiana by scores of 12-0 and 9-1 so Lindenwood can definitely say “Hoosier” Daddy? to Indiana.

Well, that wraps up my turn as a guest commentator for my uncle. To tell the people at Lindenwood to just photoshop a lion’s mane on to my picture and use me as their new mascot click here: http://www.lindenwoodlions.com/

THE FEEL-GOOD STORY OF THE FALL CONTINUES

The Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers volleyball team continues their movie-like turnaround. At 1 point the ladies were a very glum 1-7 and are now boasting a 13-9 record. The Grenadiers’ latest victory came over the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks, who are sure to be featured as 1 of my Cool-Named Teams Of The Day sometime soon. IUS won in 4 sets, by scores of 25-20, 25-13, 18-25 and 25-18. Appropriate for a team called the Grenadiers the ladies had a total of 47 kills in the match. For some noteable stats from the IUS players, complete with their official Balladeer’s Blog nicknames, just read on:

Lindsey “Aces Wild” Maymon had a match-high 13 kills (and 21 wounded – rimshot) while her teammate “Judex” Julie Roeder had 11 kills of her own. (Insert your own “A Kill-Count Of One’s Own” joke here) “Stormin'” Lauren McCartin contributed 3 kills, 3 assists and 7 kills. McCartin normally plays at the “short-stop of volleyball” libero position but for this game was replaced in that role by Emily “Starry” Knight.

The Grenadiers next travel to the Pikeville Bears this Saturday and will be back in New Albany, IN on Tuesday, October 12th, hosting the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. Tickets for IUS volleyball matches are $7 for adults. If you tell them you read about the team in Balladeer’s Blog they’ll pay YOU $7.00! (I’m kidding!)

PALM BEACH ATLANTIC SAILFISH RETURN TO THEIR WINNING WAYS

Courtesy of Palm Beach Atlantic Sports Information. The parenthetical remarks are purely my fault.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- With sophomore Mariela Quesada (Official Balladeer’s Blog nickname “The Q”) leading the way with 18 kills, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team shook off a recent two match losing streak on Tuesday evening by handing St. Thomas University a 3-0 loss at the Rubin Arena. Despite battling team-wide injuries the Fish managed to earn solid victories over the Bobcats to drop STU to 10-3 on the season and interrupt their recent seven match winning streak.

After starting the season 11-0, the Fish were tripped up their previous two matches with losses versus Lynn University (The Fighting Knights, to distinguish them from all those Pacifist Knights out there) at home (3-0) and a heartbreaking loss of 3-2 versus Florida Tech (The Panthers. I’m trying to talk them into changing their name to The Pink Panthers but no luck so far.)in Melbourne (Florida, not Australia, as I learned after arriving Down Under to cover the game) last week. Tuesday evening would be a different opponent and a different outcome as PBA (Palm Beach Atlantic, NOT the Professional Bowler’s Association) dominated with 25-13, 25-21, and 25-13 victories to cruise to their 12th win.

Quesada (“The Q”) and the Fish (The Sailfish) came out firing in game one as the 5’9″ outside-hitter produced eight kills (and left several seriously wounded) in the team’s first set while also mixing in as a setting option in games two and three.

Hitting .378 for the match, Quesada led the Sailfish hitting efforts with her 18 kills (In honor of Quesada’s nickname they should call them “Quills” when she gets them) while also adding in 10 digs for yet another double-double. As a team, Palm Beach Atlantic finished with a .344 team hitting percentage while four players hit at least .333.

Senior Jennifer (“Eldritch”) Eldridge produced six kills as did freshman Paige (“The Rage”)  Mitchell and junior (“Jumping”) Janeen McCormick. Mitchell and McCormick also produced well on the block as Mitchell led the team with four block assists and McCormick chipped in with a solo block and block assist.

(“J-Way” herself) Jessica Way (I was going to call her Jessica “Curds And” Way but thought better of it.) managed 33 assists in the win while also adding in four kills on four attempts for a perfect hitting percentage. Allie Warren (Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: “The Lethal Libero”) produced 15 digs to lead the way defensively while Eldridge and Quesada joined Warren with double-digit totals in digs with 10 digs each. (But did any of them remember to “Call before you” dig?)

The Bobcats were led on the night by Betina Schmidt who came away with a team-high 11 kills. The Brazil native managed a .219 hitting percentage but had only two teammates with at least four kills. STU connected for a .030 team hitting percentage but were held to negative hitting percentages in set one and three. (Courtesy of that potent Sailfish defense! I’ll say it even though their release is too modest to!)

PBA (This time it DOES mean the Professional Bowlers Association, oddly enough) will have the next few days off from game action while they prepare to host the Pepsi Bash at the Beach Tournament on Friday and Saturday, October 8-9 at the Rubin Arena.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: ALVERNO INFERNO FINISHES THEIR FALL SEASON

MADISON, Wis. — The Alverno College tennis team concluded its season at the  2010 Northern Athletics Conference Individual Championship this weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Sophomore Abigail Kohal (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) advanced the furthest in
the singles play, reaching the semifinals of the B-flight tournament before falling to Aurora University‘s Elizabeth Pfaff in two sets, 7-5, 6-3.

Kohal’s three wins in the tournament doubled her season win total,
finishing up 2010 at 6-12 in singles play.

“Abigail played the best tennis she’s played all season,” Alverno head
coach Erin Felber said.

Gabby Allen (Milwaukee/Bay View) made it to the quarterfinals of the
B-flight tournament, also losing to Pfaff. Allen won the first set 6-2,
before dropping the second set 7-6 on a 10-5 tiebreaker, and then being
edged out in the third set 7-5.

With her two tournament wins, Allen finished the season with a team-best
singles record of 9-7.

Senior Sherquila Riley (Milwaukee/Washington) was the only other Inferno
player to pick up a win in singles play. Riley won her first match of
the C-flight tournament, 8-5, over MSOE‘s Marguerite Wellstein before
falling to eventual runner-up Emily Hereford of Dominican University,
8-0, in the round of 16.

Riley closed out the season at 7-9 in singles play.

In doubles action, Kohal teamed up with Andrea Derrick (Greenfield,
Wis.) and received the B-flight tournament’s top seed. The duo advanced
to the semifinals, before falling to Marian University‘s fourth-seeded
team of Rachel Brotz and Rebecca Hezcko, 8-2.

“Andrea and Abigail played great together at doubles. They worked and
communicated well with each other and they fought hard until the end.”

Alverno–in just its second season of intercollegiate
competition–finished the season with a 5-9 overall mark, and was tied
for eighth at 4-7 in the NAC standings, just a win back of making the
NAC team tournament in the spring.

“I’m very proud of the improvements we made throughout the season. We’ve
come a long way from last year and the Alverno tennis program is headed
in the right direction.”

NUGGETS: OCTOBER 5TH

The UC-San Diego Tritons volleyball team moved above .500 Saturday night with a win over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in straight sets. The scores were 26-24, 25-20 and again 25-20 and the ladies’ record is now 7-6 on the season. Stat leaders for the match were Katie “Mighty KC” Condon with 12 kills and 10 digs; her teammate Thalia “Muse” McCann also had a double-double with 11 digs and 30 assists; Janessa “Finesse-A” Werhane, in the libero position, contributed 20 digs; Roxanne “Digger” Brunsting registered 16 digs and “The Killer A”, Alanna Rutan had 8 kills. The Tritons will next see action against the Cal State-San Bernardino Coyotes Friday night at 7pm Pacific Time.

Georgia’s Albany State Golden Rams are rolling at 5-0, having routed the Lane Dragons on Saturday by a score of 43-13. The Fleeces (as I like to call them for short) were led by Robert “Meltin'” Welton who rushed for 138 yds and 2 touchdowns while LiRonnie Davis had 2 td receptions. The score was just 14-7 at halftime, but in the 2nd half ASU’s “Dirty Blue Defense” clamped down even harder and the offense, guided by QB Stanley Jennings, asserted itself. This coming Saturday  the Golden Rams celebrate Homecoming, Auric Goldfinger-style, welcoming the Golden Bears of Miles College.

Turning to women’s golf, the Concordia (WI) Falcons won their 2nd straight Northern Athletics Conference title over the weekend. By the way, I think 100 years from now sports reports will be full of stories on institutions like Concordia (Mars) and Bethel (Alpha Centauri) but I’m kind of weird. Anyway, the Falcons were led by medalist Muriel McIntyre (make that “magnificent medalist Muriel McIntyre”) who shot 160 (75 on Day 1 and 85 on Day 2) for her 3rd straight individual conference championship. The Falcons’ total score was 756 (386 and 370) with the Edgewood Eagles in 2nd with a total score of 785 (390 and 395).

The Cumberlands Patriots retained possession of the Brass Lantern, the trophy that they and their rivals the Union Bulldogs (I’ll admit it. I’ve run out of “Union” related jokes after yesterday’s Joe Hill bit) play for. The Pats won by a score of 35-21 on Homecoming. The crucial matchup in the Mid-South Conference‘s Western Division had an extend audience since it was the Victory Sports Network Game Of The Week. Offensively QB “Jammin'” Jay Bright accomplished more with his legs than his arm yesterday, going just 4 of 11 for 73 yds through the air for 1 score and 52 yds for 3 td’s on the ground. The leading rusher for the Patriots was Terrance “The Bad TC” Cobb with 91 yds on 13 carries. This was the 5th year in a row that Cumberlands has beaten the Bulldogs for the Brass Lantern.

Lincoln Memorial University’s women’s soccer team has set a new school record for the best start to a season at 9-0. The Railsplitters reached this milestone with a 5-1 rout of the Cumberlands Patriots. Samantha Meek inherited the Earth early on in the game, giving the Railsplitters a 1-nil lead off a pass from Sarah “The Midfield Maniac” Taylor. 4 minutes later Sarah Harvey, “The Rabbit” herself, added another LMU goal off an assist from “Lethal” Leslie Wilson. In the 53rd minute of the game the Patriots cut the lead to 2-1, but that just made the Railsplitters angry and an offensive onslaught began. Midfield Maniac Taylor went ballistic, scoring LMU’s next goal 6 minutes later and assisting in the final 2 goals, which were slammed in by Karen “Dr B” Boleska and Jennah “Killwho?” Kilroy. This Wednesday the ladies welcome their arch-rivals the Carson-Newman Eagles.

Frank Miriello, Head Football Coach for the Washington and Lee Generals, set a school record for victories at 77 when his team roughed up the Guilford Quakers 55-29 this past weekend. The 55 points the Generals scored was the most they had scored in a game since 1962 in a win over the Franklin and Marshall Diplomats. Washington and Lee led 20-15 at half-time and then exploded in the 3rd quarter for 3 unanswered touchdowns. In the 4th quarter the teams exchanged 2 touchdowns apiece and Miriello, in his 16th year commanding the Generals, took his well-deserved place in the record books. This Saturday Washington and Lee take on the Emory and Henry Wasps at 1:30pm Eastern Time.

THE ALVERNO INFERNO HAVE BURNED THROUGH THE REGULAR SEASON; HOPE TO INCINERATE POST-SEASON OPPONENTS

In women’s college tennis, the Alverno Inferno closed out the regular season with a win over the Mt Mary College Blue Angels. The following courtesy of Alverno Sports Information:

MILWAUKEE — All four seniors on the Alverno College tennis team picked up victories en route to a 6-3 victory over visiting Mt. Mary College in
a nonconference match on Senior Day at Humboldt Park in Milwaukee.

“Awesome!” Alverno head coach Erin Felber said. “What a great win for
the seniors and a great team win.”

Trailing 3-2, the Inferno seniors won the last four matches of the dual
to seal the victory in the final team event of the fall season.

Amanda Almquist (Greenfield, Wis.) tied things up with a 6-1, 6-1
victory at No. 1 singles, setting the momentum of the match in Alverno’s favor. The next match to finish was at No. 5 singles as Sherquila Riley (Milwaukee/Washington) won a marathon of a match 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 including an 11-9 tiebreaker in the final set.

Gabby Allen (Milwaukee/Bay view) then clinched the team victory with her 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 win at No. 3 singles to improve her record to 7-6 on the season.

In the middle of a battle herself, Andrea Derrick’s (Greenfield, Wis.)
No. 4 singles match went to a third set 10-point tiebreaker with the
team result already decided. Derrick took the first set 6-4 before
dropping the second set 7-5. She then completed the senior sweep in
singles play taking the third set 10-7.

In doubles play the Inferno took two of the three matches to begin play
with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Allen and Almquist picked up their
seventh victory of the season with an 8-5 win at the two-spot. Riley
teamed up with freshman Devon Wiseman (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) for the 8-5 win and eighth victory of the season at the three-spot.

Tonight was the final team match of the season for the Inferno (5-9)
before the 2010 Northern Athletics Conference Individual Championship
Tournament this weekend at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison. The
visiting Blue Angels dropped to 3-10 on the season.

DROVERS KICKING BUTTS AS WELL AS SOCCER BALLS

(Courtesy University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Sports Information. The parenthetical comments are mine alone.)

CHICKASHA – Not just one, but two USAO Drovers stood out among conference opponents as playing exceptional soccer last week — and became Sooner Athletic Conference Players of the Week.

Both Calli (“DB“) Cooper and Nikola Cakarevic (One half of Drover soccer’s “NC Hammer” duo along with Niall Crick, as readers of this blog will recall) were honored with Offensive Player of the Week. (Balladeer’s note: When Nikola scores a goal the Drover fans should chant Niiiiiiiiiiiiikolaaaaaaaaaa like in those old Ricola ads)

Calli Cooper, a sophomore from Norman, shined with back-to-back hat tricks (and hat-to-hat back tricks – rimshot) and four assists in the two games the Drovers played last week, first against the Bethel College Threshers and then the Tabor College Bluejays a few days later.

“Calli I feel is just starting to play to her potential this season,” Hampton said.

Cooper is by far the team’s leading scorer this season. She’s made more than 50 percent of her shots on goal so far in 2010, and she is eighth in the division in goals per game (1.5) and in points per game (3.83). Additionally, she’s 10th in total points with 23. She’s also ranked in the top 30 in seven other categories. (And the Top 7 in 30 other categories)

This season, Cooper has scored nine goals and had five assists.

With seven goals in two games, Cakarevic was crucial in the Drovers’ wins this week. In addition to tying his own school record with five goals in a game against Tabor College on Friday, (Five goals being more than some teams have scored so far this season) Cakarevic scored two of USAO’s three goals against Bethel College days before. He scored the team’s game-winning goal against Bethel. (Any odds on how long it will be before he marries a Spice Girl?)

He has scored 11 goals already for USAO and is third in the division in goals per game (1.67) and points per game (3.5). He’s also seventh in total goals (10) and ranked in the top 30 in four other categories. (And the Top 4 in 30 other- oh, sorry, I used that joke already)

“Nikola had a great week,” Hampton said. “He is an exceptional player, and we look forward to him continuing his success in SAC play.” (Don’t go there!)

The Drover men are undefeated (6-0) and ranked No. 10 in the country going into Tuesday’s game against conference rivals the Oklahoma City University  Stars . The women are 4-1-1 overall.

THE LEADER BOARD

As we rapidly approach the end of September let’s take a look at the Top 3 teams in the polls.

FOOTBALL

NAIA

1. SIOUX FALLS COUGARS – (4-0)  As they prepare to leave the NAIA the Cougars are hoping to go out in style – as Threepeat Champions in football. All eyes are on the Cougars and sports historians are waiting to see how this season ends.

2. CARROLL (MT) FIGHTING SAINTS – (4-0) The Halos move up to the # 2 spot vacated by the Lindenwood Lions, who were upset by the MNU Pioneers. Having beaten their arch-rivals the Montana Tech Orediggers for the move up must be especially sweet.

3. SAINT XAVIER COUGARS – (5-0) Fun fact: In all sports in the NAIA approximately 19 teams in the Top 25 are called the Cougars! (I’m kidding!) SXU has reached the 3-spot for the 1st time since 2007 led by the superheroics of QB Anthony “Crop-Man” Kropp and WR Mike “M Squared” Maher who leads ALL divisions in scoring by the way! Want to see how famous these 2 have become? Google Anthony “Crop-Man” Kropp, and then Mike “M Squared” Maher!

D3

1. UW-WHITEWATER WARHAWKS – (3-0) In D3 football our Top 2 teams have been sharing the National Championship for the past 5 years in a row. Yes, since 2005 the D3 title game has been played between the Warhawks and our # 2 team. Some love that fact, some hate it and others just say if the other teams don’t like it they can rise up and beat 1 of them in the playoffs.

2. MT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS – (3-0) Even before the Purple Raiders and the Warhawks started monopolizing the D3 Championship the Purple Raiders were an established dynasty and were practically a fixture in the title matchup. Will it be 6 in a row between our Top 2 teams? Stay tuned!

3. WESLEY WOLVERINES – (4-0) Watch out for these Wolverines (Team slogan: “100% Rich Rodriguez-Free!”) who have got to be sick of playing 3rd fiddle to the Warhawks and Purple Raiders. Wesley will be “sneaking around the chicken coop” as Lee Corso says and are many people’s pick to upset our Top 2 if anyone can.

D2

1. MN-DULUTH BULLDOGS – (4-0) UMD won the 2008 D2 National Championship and are itching to wear the crown again. With the Grand Valley State Lakers out of the top spot the Bulldogs are riding high at least until the playoffs roll around. That’s right, fans of 1A football. In the divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog they settle it on the field!

2. GVSU LAKERS – (4-0) Speak of the devils! Even before their Brian Kelly days the Lakers were perennial contenders in D2, piling up a slew of Championships. They’re likely to use their recent fall from the top spot as motivation to win big the rest of the way rather than simply fume over it.

3. NORTH ALABAMA LIONS – (4-0) They’ve had THE Terry Bowden coaching them for the last few years, they’ve got the coolest helmets out of the Top 3 teams in D2 and they play in the Gulf South Conference, which is often called “The SEC of D2 football”. Well, at least until the Arkansas teams bolt the conference after the end of this season.

VOLLEYBALL

NAIA

1. FRESNO PACIFIC SUNBIRDS – (14-0) It’s not true that the Sunbirds haven’t lost a match since the Eisenhower Administration, it just seems that way. (It was really during Reagan’s 2nd term) These ladies are trying for 4 National Championships in a row! Will they make it? Will they actually LOSE a game at some point? Keep checking back to find out!

2. LEE FLAMES – (14-0) The Flames move up from the 3-spot last week. You almost wish the playoffs would start this week so that the Sunbirds and the Flames could meet each other with no losses, winner take all. You can bet the Flames will try to be the closest thing to a rival that Fresno Pacific has yet had!

3. BIOLA EAGLES – (12-4) The Eagles flew all the way up from #9 leapfrogging still-undefeated teams like the Red Raiders and the Scorpions. Like our #1 team Biola plays in the Golden State Athletic Conference, for my money the toughest volleyball conference in the NAIA. How tough? So tough that Biola is 4th in the conference race, yet 3rd in the national rankings!

NUGGETS: SEPTEMBER 28TH

The Cumberlands Patriots started Mid-South Conference play Saturday with a 35-33 win over the Bethel (TN) Wildcats in an Instant Classic. The Patriots are now 2-2 overall after holding on late to notch this win. Sophomore star Terrance “The Bad TC” Cobb led the team’s rushing attack with 114 yds on 21 attempts plus 1 TD catch. QB “Jammin'” Jay Bright was 6 of 12 with 3 TD’s. On the other side of the ball the Patriots were led by “Dr Defense” himself, Brendan Kelly, who had 20 tackles, an interception and 2 pass breakups, 1 of which sealed the win for UC. Next Saturday the Pats face The Battle For The Brass Lantern against their rivals the Union Bulldogs.

The Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitters volleyball team came back from being down 2-1 to pull out a 3-2 win over the Newberry College Wolves. The ladies won by scores of 22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 29-27 and 16-14. With this win the Railsplitters are now 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Tomorrow LMU will take on the Tusculum Pioneers with the opening serve scheduled for 6:30PM.

Reigning NAIA football champs the Sioux Falls Cougars continued their quest to threepeat as National Champions with a handy 34-10 win over the Hastings Broncos. QB Jon “Jonny East” Eastman gave Broncos defenders fits with his arms and his legs (and his pancreas had them frothing at the mouth with rage) picking up 386 yds through the air and 39 more on the ground. The high point of the game for Hastings, the home team, may have come when a team of skydivers (Insert your own Coleman Francis joke here. Fans of bad movies will get it) delivered the game balls in spectacular fashion prior to kickoff.

The Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers’ volleyball team continues their monumental turnaround this season. At one point sporting a glum record of 1-7 the ladies have won 9 in a row to become 10-7 on the year! Balladeer’s Blog has been following this story since the ladies were still below .500 and this may well be the feel-good story of the fall! This past weekend the Grenadiers defeated the Mountain State Cougars and the Cincinnati Christian Eagles. Jade “Killbot” Troutman led IUS with 11 kills and Lindsey “Aces Wild” Maymon had a match-high 4 service aces against the Cougars. Against the Eagles “Judex” Julie Roeder provided crucial kills to keep the Grens in the game until a big block by PJ “PJ” Cockerell put them up for good. Someone get a movie studio ready for a project about these ladies!

The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays football team crushed the Moravian Greyhounds 41-3 on Saturday. QB “Hurlin'” Hewitt Tomlin went 18 of 33 for 219 yds and 2 TD’s through the air and on the ground led the Blue Jays with 65 yds. 53 of those yds came on a career-long run for Tomlin following a fake in the 2nd quarter. Tomlin has been named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player Of The Week for his performance.  The Blue Jays are now 2-1 for the 3-game road series to open the 2010 season.

Two women on the Alverno Inferno volleyball team were named to the Moody Bible Institute All-Tournament Team after the Inferno’s participation in the event this weekend. Chelsea Gulbronson and Morgan Stuckey were the two players named to the All-Tournament Team. Over the course of the 3 matches Gulbronson had 12 kills, 6 service aces and 2 solo blocks. while Stuckey had a team-leading 29 kills, 6 aces and 4 digs.

SPECIAL GUEST COMMENTATOR: BOGIE

My sister Rosemary’s dog Bogie is a passionate Redskins fan. He’s also an expert on various college  sports and has been following them for all 10 years of his life so far. Balladeer’s Blog is proud to have him as our very first Special Guest Commentator. ******The following comments are strictly Bogie’s opinions and do not necessarily reflect the views of Balladeer’s Blog.

Bogie: The Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers volleyball team has won their 6th game in a row, extending their effort to turn this season around. The ladies are now 7-7 after defeating the Spalding Golden Eagles in straight sets 25-20, 25-21 and 25-12. My Mom and my Uncle (the guy who writes this blog) and I are big Marx Brothers fans and we can’t believe the Spalding teams aren’t called the Captains! Anyway, the Grenadiers try to go over 500 for the 1st time this season when they host the Fighting Engineers of Rose Hulman today!

Bogie: The Lewis-Clark State Warriors men’s cross-country team has moved up 1 notch to #19 in the latest Top 25 poll. Ironically the women’s team is at #19 in their poll as well, but that represented a drop of 3 spots. The Warriors teams will next see action tomorrow in the Eric Anderson Memorial Invite, to be run at Plante’s Ferry Park in Spokane, WA.  I’d like to give a shoutout to Spokane’s Gonzaga teams which are doggies like me but my Uncle says I can’t. I’ll just wish Coach Mike Collins and the teams good luck then.

Bogie: The Albany State Golden Rams football team, fresh off their upset of Tuskegee last Saturday, prepare to face old rivals the Savannah State Tigers in the “Rumble In The Swamp” tomorrow. This will be the 60th meeting between the 2 HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). The Golden Rams lead the series by a record of 41-16-2 and come into this Saturday’s action riding a 13-game winning streak against Savanna State. Kickoff is set for 2pm at Waycross Memorial Stadium. Since Tigers are a kind of cat I’ll be rooting for the Golden Rams to beat them since we dogs hate cats!

Bogie: The University of Science and Arts Of Oklahoma Drovers (Drovers are a cooler version of a cowboy) men’s soccer team remained at #10 in the NAIA Top 25,  coming off a rest week. Tuesday night the Drovers defeated the Bethel (KS) Threshers and will next face the Tabor College Bluejays today, on Drover Pitch. The Drover women’s soccer team has gotten some votes but still hasn’t cracked the women’s Top 25 just yet.

Bogie: Tomorrow, when the Cumberlands Patriots face the Bethel (TN) Wildcats on the gridiron, Head Coach John Bland will wear a Coach T Cure Muscular Dystrophy patch, like many coaches nationwide, as part of a promotion to raise money for MD research. For live audio of the game click here:  http://www.cumberlandspatriots.com/   In a  related Patriots football story, you can read about their legendary  player Madison McCalmon by clicking here:  https://glitternight.com/2010/07/25/the-truth-behind-the-legend-of-madison-mccalmon/

Now it’s off to collect my fee of a doggie treat for filling in for my Uncle!
