COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 6th

college of idaho coyotesCOLLEGE OF IDAHO MARKS THE RETURN OF FOOTBALL WITH A WIN – Yesterday the NAIA’s COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES played their first game of intercollegiate football since 1977! The Yotes did it in style, too, not only notching a win ON THE ROAD but carrying on the NAIA tradition of defeating their rivals in NCAA Division 3 football. C of I battled the D3 PACIFIC UNIVERSITY BOXERS and led 7-0 in the 1st Quarter but were tied with the Boxers 14-14 at Halftime. Things stood at 28-28 going into the 4th Quarter but in the end the Coyotes blocked a Field Goal attempt and won the game 35-34! Welcome back to the gridiron, College of Idaho!

Menlo Oaks helmetTHE OAKS RULE THE WORLD – Each week of every college football season at least one NAIA football team upsets a team in NCAA Division Two, similar to when a 1AA team upsets a 1A team. Yesterday the MENLO COLLEGE OAKS took it on the road to Canada to battle D2’s SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN (as in Scottish clan). The Oaks won this instant classic by a final score of 31-24. (SFU is one of the Canadian teams that do play in America’s lower divisions of college sports)

Langston LionsLANGSTON RULES THE WORLD, TOO – The 2014 Missouri Classic at Arrowhead Stadium pitted the NAIA’s LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS against NCAA Division Two’s LINCOLN (MO) UNIVERSITY BLUE TIGERS. Both offenses were clicking early as a 7-0 Blue Tiger lead became 7-7 after the Lions answered, then became a 14-7 Lincoln University lead and so on. By Halftime the Blue Tigers had seized a 42-28 advantage but Langston’s QB Mark Wright, Jr came out of the break ready to lead his team to a comeback win. The Lions scored 21 unanswered points while shutting out the Blue Tigers all 2nd Half until very late in the 4th Quarter. Langston’s Tra Keyes blocked the PAT, preserving the 49-48 upset win for the Lions!

Belhaven Blazers helmet NEWEVERYBODY, INCLUDING BELHAVEN, WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD – The NAIA’s BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY BLAZERS hosted the crosstown D2 team, the MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CHOCTAWS yesterday. QB Conner Preston and RB Aaron Spikes were on fire, passing and running for 294 and 114 yards respectively. The Blazers led 7-0 after the 1st Quarter and 20-14 at the Half. After a scoreless 3rd Quarter Belhaven added 12 more points in the 4th to seal a 32-14 victory and improve to 2-0 on the season!   Continue reading

Azusa Pacific CougarsNUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – The AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS, in their first official game as a full member of NCAA Division 2 after their move over from the NAIA, pulled off a seismic upset last night! The Cougars welcomed the storied NUMBER TWO TEAM IN THE NATION – the GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS – and defeated them in a Double Overtime Instant Classic. APU trailed the Lakers 3-0 after the 1st Quarter and 10-7 at Halftime but the Cougar defense limited Grand Valley State to just 3 points in the 2nd Half. RB Terrell Watson put the Cougars up 13-10 with 4:20 to go in the 3rd Quarter but a Laker Field Goal in the 4th tied the game at 13-13. In the SECOND OVERTIME PERIOD the Cougars emerged with a 26-23 victory that laid low the most famous D2 football dynasty and rocked the rankings!

East_Mississippi_CC_MSTHE CHAMPS TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS – To check in down at the 2-year college level for a moment the top-ranked defending champions of NJCAA football – the EAST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE LIONS – were in action last night. The Lions – sporting their stylish skull and crossbones helmets – played host to the NUMBER THREE team, the COPIAH- LINCOLN COLLEGE WOLFPACK. East Mississippi led 14-7 after one Quarter of play but QB Chad Kelly led his team to a 31-7 advantage by Halftime. Lindsey_Wilson_KYTHE BATTLE OF HIGHWAY 55 – The 18th ranked LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS couldn’t get out of their own way last night until they trailed the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS 9-0 with 6:08 left in the 1st Quarter. Valley City State Vikings helmetTHE PAINT BUCKET GAME – Meanwhile, even further west, the VALLEY CITY STATE UNIVERSITY VIKINGS battled the UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES for the Paint Bucket. Though this was the North Star Athletic Association Game of the Week it was a bit of a letdown. The Jimmies held the Paint Bucket after last year’s clash but the Vikings reclaimed it with ease last night. A 7-0 lead after 1 Quarter became 21-0 at Halftime, then 28-0 after the 3rd Quarter. COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM AUGUST 23rd

Yesterday was the kickoff of the 2014 college football season! ESPN doesn’t have the contract to televise the divisions that got underway so that’s why they simply ignore them to avoid publicizing games shown elsewhere. Here is a look at noteworthy results from August 23rd’s action.

Evangel CrusadersINAUGURAL GAME FOR ACU – The ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM played their very first game of intercollegiate football last night! They hosted the storied EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS who, unfortunately for the Firestorm faithful, made it a bittersweet night at best for ACU. The Crusaders (helmet above left) showed their years of experience over the newbies and went back home with a 40-16 victory. Congratulations to Evangel and welcome to gridiron action to the Firestorm! We’re all looking forward to seeing your football program grow.

Eastern Oregon helmetMOUNTAINEERS CLIMB OVER THE OAKS – The EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS were on the road against the MENLO COLLEGE OAKS. The Mountaineers led 13-0 after the 1st Quarter, but by Halftime the Oaks had whittled that down to a 16-14 advantage. The 3rd Quarter started out with the teams exchanging scores, leaving the score EOU 23  MC 20. The Oaks closed out the Quarter by taking their first lead of the game, 27-23 but the Mountaineers would put up 22 unanswered points in the 4th to win 45-27. QB Zach Bartlow went 23 of 33 with 4 TD’s.

Montana Western helmetDAWGS CHOMP THE DIGGERS – The UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA- WESTERN BULLDOGS welcomed their archrivals the MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS yesterday. Things got rolling early in a big way for the Bulldogs, who scored on their first three possessions for a 21-0 lead in the 1st Quarter. That expanded to a 35-0 lead at the Half. To close out the game the Montana Tech defense nearly shut out the UMW offense, giving up one lone field goal in the 2nd Half. The Orediggers scored once in the 4th Quarter making the final score Bulldogs 38  Orediggers 6. UMW QB Tyler Hulse threw for 3 TD’s in the win.  Continue reading
