In the spirit of the 4th of July season here’s a neglected battle from the American Revolution.
BATTLE OF ELIZABETHTOWN
Date(s): January 5th-7th, 1777
Location: Elizabethtown and Springfield, NJ
American Commander: General William Maxwell
British Commander: Colonel Charles Mawhood
The Battle: On January 5th American Rebels attacked a British Cavalry patrol, killing one man and wounding another. The next day some cavalrymen and 50 infantrymen set out from the town to kill or capture any Rebels in the area.
Hours after their departure the Redcoats clashed with American units who killed 9 of the infantrymen and captured all the others. Only the cavalrymen returned to Elizabethtown.
The British Colonel Mawhood ordered his men to evacuate to Amboy and on January 7th they abandoned Elizabethtown to the Americans. New Jersey Militiamen attacked the rear guard of the departing Brits, capturing another 100 men, food supplies and ALL the baggage wagons of TWO REGIMENTS.

Thanks.
I like lesser covered revolutionary War battles.
Thanks! So do I!
These kinds of actions are more fun to me than the big battles.
I know how you feel.
Too bad the British lost.
I disagree.
Revolutionary War heroes are the greatest heroes of history! “I’m so fly I never land!”
They are up there, that’s for sure!
