ODDBALL SUPERHERO: THE CONQUEROR

With the emphasis on superhero movies these days Balladeer’s Blog takes a look at another forgotten superhero.

ConquerorTHE CONQUEROR

Career: Victory Comics 1-4

Years Active: 1941-1942

Comment: Pilot Daniel Lyons accidentally crash-landed his plane in the Rocky Mountains one day. Luckily for him he landed near the remote laboratory of Dr James Norton. Dr Norton rescues Dan from the wreckage of his plane and, since the pilot is near death anyway, uses him as a human guinea pig for his Cosmic Ray Lamp.

After being subjected to the lamp not only does Dan recover, but he finds his strength, stamina and intelligence have all doubled, along with his capacity for healing. Dr Norton convinces Dan to use his second chance at life to battle the Nazis.

Conqueror 2Apparently Daniel Lyons’ ferocity was also doubled because not only does he agree to battle the Nazis but makes a personal vow to kill Hitler with his bare hands. That was a fairly edgy move for the time period since America had not yet entered World War Two, which is why some superheroes tended to fight fictional stand-ins for Nazi Germany or to settle on fighting the Bund in America.

Donning a costume Dan goes into action as the Conqueror, slaughtering Nazi soldiers all through Europe while at least once an issue repeating his vow to personally kill the Fuhrer, whom he often refers to as “the Beast.” In addition to his super-powers the Conqueror didn’t hesitate to use guns, knives and grenades to wipe out any Nazi scum that crossed his path.

Unfortunately the Conqueror barely saw New Years, 1942, before his comic book folded, leaving forever unfulfilled his desire to see Hitler take his last breath.

And no, I don’t know why Dr Norton didn’t use his Cosmic Ray Lamp to create an entire army of super-powered soldiers for the Allies. FOR A LOOK AT ALL THE OTHER HILLMAN PERIODICALS SUPERHEROES CLICK HERE.
