Yesterday the NAIA’s CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS continued this year-in year-out tradition by demolishing NCAA Division TWO’s ALDERSON-BROADDUS COLLEGE BATTLERS in their own house. The final score in this butt-kicking was Bulldogs 41 Battlers 17.
ANGELO STATE ALSO RULES THE WORLD – Division 2’s ANGELO STATE UNIVERSITY RAMS also brought down a team from a higher division. The Rams took it on the road against NCAA Division ONE team the INCARNATE WORD CARDINALS and emerged triumphant in a defensive epic. The Rams defeated the Cardinals 7-0.
A RUSHING CARTEL, NOT A DRUG CARTEL – Running Back Cartel Brooks from NCAA Division Three’s HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY STUDENT PRINCES set the new single-game rushing record for ALL DIVISIONS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL yesterday. Brooks ran for an unbelievable 465 yards in the Student Prince’s 42-14 rout of the homestanding BALDWIN-WALLACE YELLOW JACKETS.
TOP 25 UPSETS- NAIA – The 12th-ranked TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS were on the road against the number 8 team in the nation, the OTTAWA UNIVERSITY BRAVES and toppled them in a 23-20 game for the ages ### And the unranked TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS notched a 30-20 road win over the 17th-ranked ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The MISSOURI SOUTHERN LIONS stunned the number 6 PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS 35-21 in their own stadium, The Jungle ### The storied GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS brought down the 11th-ranked SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS 49-34 ### And the number 13 BLOOMSBURG HUSKIES edged the visiting 12th-ranked SLIPPERY ROCK ROCKETS 42-38.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 3 – The 10th-ranked UW-PLATTEVILLE PIONEERS took it on the road and beat the number 8 UW-OSHKOSH TITANS in a 17-16 nailbiter that aged the spectators by about 5 years ### The RHODES COLLEGE LYNX sent the 19th-ranked MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS home nursing a 49-30 beatdown loss.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 3 – PART 2 – The unranked CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS were on the road against the (20) ITHACA COLLEGE BOMBERS in their yearly battle for the Cortaca Jug. The Red Dragons took that trophy with a 28-24 win ### The ALBRIGHT LIONS beat the (22) LEBANON VALLEY FLYING DUTCHMEN 40-25 ### And the HUNTINGDON HAWKS held serve against the (24) MARYVILLE SCOTS 45-38.
SENIOR MOMENT – The MENLO COLLEGE OAKS celebrated their team’s 2013 Senior Day by hosting the VALLEY CITY STATE UNIVERSITY VIKINGS. Happily for the Menlo faithful their Seniors got to have a happy day since the Oaks prevailed in this final home game of their college football careers. The final score was Oaks 38 Vikings 28.
OLDEST AND LONGEST – The oldest rivalry in NCAA Division Two football also turned out to be the longest-lasting game of the day yesterday. The (5) HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY REDDIES were on the road against their ancient archrivals the OUACHITA BAPTIST TIGERS. The two battled through regulation and THREE OVERTIMES before the Reddies emerged with a 60-52 win.
BRIDGE BOWL XVIII – The 18th edition of the Bridge Bowl was played yesterday between the THOMAS MORE COLLEGE SAINTS and the homestanding MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH LIONS. By the end of the 1st Quarter Thomas More College led by a score of 14-3 and never looked back. When all was said and done the Saints had won the Bridge Bowl 59-13.
ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE – The NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVER HAWKS up-ended the CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (their spelling) by a score of 45-38 ### The UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS went on the road and routed the WAYNE STATE (NE) WILDCATS 35-10 ### And the UNIVERSITY OF MARY MARAUDERS dismembered the visiting MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON GOLDEN EAGLES 31-15.
IT’S ACADEMIC! – The Academic Bowl is the name for the annual rivalry game played between the CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY SPARTANS and the CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY TARTANS. The visiting Spartans led 28-17 at Halftime but had to endure a furious comeback attempt by the Tartans in the 2nd Half. Case Western Reserve held on for a 35-32 victory.
COOL NAME BOWLS – Here are some games where everyone was a winner because of how cool the teams’ names were: The SOUTHERN ARKANSAS UNIVERSITY MULERIDERS exterminated the ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS to the tune of 44-20 ### And the CALIFORNIA (PA) VULCANS won a 42-21 road trip to face the SHIPPENSBURG RED RAIDERS.
BRONZE TURKEY GAME – The 125th edition of the Bronze Turkey Game once again pitted the MONMOUTH COLLEGE FIGHTING SCOTS against the KNOX COLLEGE PRAIRIE FIRE. The game was all Monmouth as the road team led 21-0 at Halftime and 31-0 after 3 Quarters of play. The Prairie Fire didn’t even get on the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter, losing 37-10 to the Fighting Scots.
RUSTLING UP A ROUT – The GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS were on the road taking on the SADDLEBACK COLLEGE GAUCHOS. The Rustlers never trailed in this game and led 6-0 after one Quarter and 13-3 by Halftime. The 2nd Half saw more of the same as Golden West College continued dominating on both sides of the ball for a 30-6 victory.
WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A BASEBALL GAME BROKE OUT – The MARITIME COLLEGE PRIVATEERS won a 7-6 defensive epic against the visiting GALLAUDET BISON ### The MT IDA MUSTANGS logged a 6-0 road win over the HUSSON EAGLES ### And the MACALESTER SCOTS defeated the HAMLINE UNIVERSITY PIPERS by a score of 7-0.
TIGER TALES – The LINCOLN (MO) BLUE TIGERS smacked around the visiting SOUTHWEST BAPTIST BEARCATS 51-28 ### Meanwhile the UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS completely eviscerated their opponents, the CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS, by an unbelievable score of NINETY-ONE to TWENTY-EIGHT ### And the FORT HAYS TIGERS mauled the NEBRASKA-KEARNEY LOPERS by a score of 56-17.
CRANBERRY BOWL – The BRIDGEWATER STATE UNIVERSITY BEARS and the MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME BUCCANEERS squared off in Cranberry Bowl 35. This game was a tale of two halves. After 2 Quarters the score was all tied up at 14-14 but the final 30 minutes of play were all Bridgewater State. The final score wound up being Bears 45 Buccaneers 20.
A TALE OF TWO BETHEL TEAMS – The BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS welcomed the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES yesterday and knocked them off to the tune of 26-14 ### On the other hand the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS were taken down at home by the visiting BELHAVEN COLLEGE BLAZERS by a score of 55-45.
THE DUTCHMAN’S SHOES – The Dutchman’s Shoes are the trophy that the RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS and the UNION DUTCHMEN play for each year in their rivalry game. The score in this tight contest was 24-21 at the end of the 3rd Quarter with the Engineers going on to win by a final score of 31-28. Congratulations Engineers!
ENDING YEAR ONE WITH A BANG – Two teams in their very first year of intercollegiate football closed out their premier seasons with wins. The WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS got their first win in program history with a 13-7 road win over the CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS ### And the REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES closed out an unbelievable 6-4 debut year by beating the CAMPBELLSVILLE TIGERS 66-48 in their own house.
ALL-NAME GAMES – The CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS STAGS hosted the POMONA-PITZER SAGEHENS and won a 29-23 nailbiter ### The CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD COBBERS meanwhile took down the GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS GUSTIES 38-31 ### And the LAKE FOREST FORESTERS beheaded the ST NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS by a score of 31-3.
SWASHBUCKLERS – The MODESTO COLLEGE PIRATES keelhauled and hornswaggled the SAN JOAQUIN DELTA MUSTANGS to the tune of 72-26 ### The SANTA MONICA COLLEGE CORSAIRS meanwhile ran through the ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE MARAUDERS 57-30 ### And the MOORPARK RAIDERS won a 28-19 battle with the CERRITOS FALCONS.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NAIA – The SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS won a 38-34 game for the ages against the visiting BACONE COLLEGE WARRIORS ### The WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN won 33-28 at the TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS ### And the CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS defeated the GRACELAND YELLOW JACKETS by a score of 20-10.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NCAA D2 – The BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS took it on the road against the FORT LEWIS SKYHAWKS and went home basking in a thrilling 17-14 victory ### Meanwhile the ALBANY STATE GOLDEN RAMS won by the exact same score at the MILES GOLDEN BEARS ### And the EAST CENTRAL TIGERS won a 23-16 road clash with the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM.

ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS improved to 5-5 with their 64-23 thrashing of the CENTRAL METHODIST EAGLES ### The (17) ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES logged an 80-20 road slaughter of the WALDORF WARRIORS ### And the LINDENWOOD-BELLEVILLE LYNX dismantled the visiting HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY INDIANS 57-7.

BEATING THE BATTLING BISHOPS – The COLLEGE OF WOOSTER SCOTS eked out a 28-27 victory over the visiting OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BATTLING BISHOPS ### And in keeping with the fad of defeating teams with that nickname yesterday the METHODIST UNIVERSITY MONARCHS won a 69-62 shootout with the NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN BATTLING BISHOPS.
VARYING DEGREES OF DOUBLE DIGITS – The SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES notched a 40-7 road beatdown against the COMPTON COLLEGE TARTARS ### The CHABOT COLLEGE GLADIATORS impaled the REEDLEY TIGERS 47-6 ### And the PALOMAR COLLEGE COMETS fell to the GROSSMONT GRIFFINS by a score of 48-14.

GETTING A JUMP ON THE WEEKEND – Friday night saw a few teams kick off the college football games for the weekend. The BECKER COLLEGE HAWKS won the closest game of the evening, edging the homestanding ANNA MARIA AMCATS 24-19 ### The ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS clubbed down the TEACHER’S COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY LIONS 45-21 ### And the SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEAGULLS dismembered the FROSTBURG STATE BOBCATS 70-14 for the Regent’s Cup.
