BACONE RULES THE WORLD YET AGAIN! – Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog will remember that each week of every college football season brings us at least one NAIA college football team upsetting a team from NCAA Division Two. (No NCAA Division 3 teams do that) The BACONE COLLEGE WARRIORS are one of the NAIA teams that accomplish this task on a fairly regular basis and yesterday they did it again, trouncing D2’s visiting PANHANDLE STATE AGGIES 47-9.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The unranked STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS brought down the visiting 8th ranked OTTAWA UNIVERSITY BRAVES in an authoritative 30-18 manhandling ### The NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS (helmet at left) won a thrilling 30-28 homestand against the number 14 CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS ### And the SOUTHERN OREGON RAIDERS sent the 18th ranked MSU-NORTHERN LIGHTS home reeling from a 55-28 beatdown.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION TWO – The number 21 MIDWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS hosted the 7th ranked WEST ALABAMA TIGERS and crushed them 45-21 ### Meanwhile the LENOIR-RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS smacked around the visiting number 23 NEWBERRY WOLVES to the tune of 35-14 ### And the EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FIGHTING SCOTS knocked the homestanding 25th ranked IUP CRIMSON HAWKS out of the rankings in a 36-30 nailbiter.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION THREE – The ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS were ungracious hosts, toppling the number 11 WESLEY WOLVERINES by a score of 24-17 ### Meanwhile the SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEAGULLS marked Family Weekend by winning a 42-35 Instant Classic against the 19th ranked ST JOHN FISHER CARDINALS ### And the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE SPARTANS clobbered the number 21 COE KOHAWKS 38-14 in their own house.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS GAME – The number 2 team in the nation, the UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS, won yesterday’s Breast Cancer Awareness Game against the 11th ranked GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS. This was a true game for the ages but in the end the Patriots prevailed in this homestand by a score of 38-35. Cumberlands stayed perfect at 6-0 while the Tigers fall to 3-3.
WHEN RANKED TEAMS COLLIDE – The (3) GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS improved to 7-0 by totalling the visiting (23) TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS 47-14 ### Meanwhile the(4) ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS notched a 37-28 road win over the(20) ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS ### The (13) TABOR COLLEGE BLUEJAYS eked out a 20-19 victory at the (15) FRIENDS FALCONS in the game of the day ### And the (19) FAULKNER EAGLES clawed the eyes out of the (25) CUMBERLAND BULLDOGS 44-7.
DON’T CALL IT BEGINNER’S LUCK – Some of the teams playing in their VERY FIRST year of intercollegiate football are turning in respectable performances. The ALDERSON-BROADDUS COLLEGE BATTLERS logged their 3rd win of this season by trouncing the WARNER ROYALS 51-14 ### The HENDRIX WARRIORS are 3-3 after beating the BERRY VIKINGS 30-17 ### And the OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON won their 2nd game by a 37-10 score over the WAYLAND BAPTIST PIONEERS.
ALL-NAME GAMES – Clashes between teams with incredibly cool nicknames included: the HOPE COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN authoritatively smacking down the ALMA SCOTS 43-23 in their own house ### The MUHLENBURG COLLEGE MULES likewise notched an impressive road win over the GETTYSBURG COLLEGE BULLETS 35-10 ### And the ALBION COLLEGE BRITONS won a 31-21 battle at the KALAMAZOO HORNETS.
MAPLE LEAF FESTIVAL – You almost wouldn’t know that the BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS are ranked at number 10 and sport a terrific 6-1 record. Yesterday at the Maple Leaf Festival Baker … well, baked the visiting CENTRAL METHODIST UNIVERSITY EAGLES for by a score of 46-12 ### And we need more love for the 12th ranked ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS who are also 6-1 after yesterday’s 45-13 mauling of the EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS.
FEELS LIKE OLD TIMES – The UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS were one of the dominant dynasties of NAIA college football before moving up to NCAA Division Two in 2011. The Cougars are beginning to really reach their stride in D2 between last season and this one. In addition to some temporary stays in the D2 rankings USF is racking up more and more blowouts like yesterday’s 47-7 thrashing of the CONCORDIA-ST PAUL GOLDEN BEARS.
HAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The number 6 MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS routed the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS by a score of 31-14 ### The 5th ranked BENEDICTINE RAVENS won a much closer 45-40 Homecoming clash with the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE PIONEERS ### And the ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES won a 42-37 Instant Classic against the TAYLOR TROJANS.
SIXTY-THREE IS OKAY WITH ME – The IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS, the defending champions of NJCAA football, dismembered the visiting ELLSWORTH COLLEGE PANTHERS by a score of 63-6 ### And the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS also put up 63 points to the 39 that were scored by the traveling FORT SCOTT COLLEGE GREYHOUNDS in another NJCAA clash.
SHUTOUTS – The NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRAIRIE WOLVES improved to 4-3 with yesterday’s 28-0 manhandling of the DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS ### The MAYVILLE STATE COMETS boast an identical record after eviscerating the visiting TRINITY BIBLE COLLEGE LIONS 35-0 ### And the LIU-POST PIONEERS ramrodded the PACE SETTERS by an unbelievable score of FIFTY-EIGHT to NOTHING!
WORKING OVERTIME – Believe it or not in yesterday’s action there was only ONE Overtime clash in all of the divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog. The AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES, who used to go by the much cooler nickname Avalanche by the way, won a road game in Overtime against the GRACELAND YELLOW JACKETS. The final score in this gripping thriller was 30-24.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NAIA – The BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS took it on the road and won a 37-31 nailbiter against the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS ### The (16) PERU STATE BOBCATS withstood a 31-28 invasion by the CULVER-STOCKTON WILDCATS ### And the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS, the defending champions of NAIA football, are bouncing back after a rough patch and defeated the homestanding WILLIAM PENN STATESMEN 31-21.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NCAA D2 – The MISSOURI S&T MINERS survived a 14-13 visit from the ST JOSEPH’S PUMAS ### Meanwhile the MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES took it on the road and eked out a 33-31 victory over the NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY TIMBERWOLVES ### And the SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS won a 14-10 thriller at the WAYNE STATE (MI) WARRIORS.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NCAA D3 – The POMONA-PITZER SAGEHENS were on the road against the WHITTIER COLLEGE POETS and won a tight 17-10 thriller ### The LAGRANGE COLLEGE PANTHERS survived a 44-40 homestand against the HUNTINGDON HAWKS ### And the CASE WESTERN RESERVE SPARTANS notched a 38-31 road win over the PUGET SOUND LOGGERS.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NJCAA – The MESA COLLEGE THUNDERBIRDS squeezed out a 37-30 victory at the GLENDALE (AZ) GAUCHOS ### Meanwhile the NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA A&M GOLDEN NORSEMEN got some of their mojo back with a 21-14 triumph over the CISCO COLLEGE WRANGLERS ### And the IOWA CENTRAL TRITONS eked out a 29-27 neutral site affair win against the ARKANSAS BAPTIST COLLEGE BUFFALOES.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – CCCAA – The MONTEREY PENINSULA COLLEGE LOBOS survived an invasion by the GAVILAN RAMS by a score of 34-33 ### Another Rams team did well on the road, however, as the VICTOR VALLEY RAMS managed a 19-14 win at the EAST LOS ANGELES HUSKIES ### The CITY COLLEGE OF SANTA BARBARA VAQUEROS snuck past the homestanding ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE MARAUDERS 18-16 ### And the CERRITOS FALCONS won at the ALLAN HANCOCK BULLDOGS in a 30-27 thriller.
VIKINGS PLUNDERING AND PILLAGING – Various teams called Vikings showed their cold hard steel yesterday. The AUGUSTANA (SD) COLLEGE VIKINGS carved up the visiting UPPER IOWA PEACOCKS to the tune of 35-6 ### And while that was going on the AUGUSTANA (IL) VIKINGS were on the road against the MILLIKIN BIG BLUE and eviscerated them by a score of 47-19 ### Out west the DIABLO VALLEY VIKINGS crushed the REEDLEY TIGERS 28-0.
STILL TIME FOR A TURNAROUND – The KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES notched a 34-20 road win against the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES ### The MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS broiled the DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS by a score of 34-14 ### The LANGSTON LIONS mauled the TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS 34-8 ### And the UNION (KY) BULLDOGS triumphed at the BLUEFIELD COLLEGE RAMBLING RAMS 45-35.
ROAD WARRIORS – The MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY MARAUDERS were at the CHEYNEY WOLVES and hammered them by a score of 30-12 ### The CALIFORNIA (PA) VULCANS devastated the SETON HILL GRIFFINS 33-7 ### The CENTRAL WASHINGTON WILDCATS won a 54-14 laugher at Canada’s SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN ### And the WESTERN OREGON WOLVES won a closer 46-34 clash with the DIXIE STATE RED STORM.
BLOWOUTS AND BUTTKICKINGS – The TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGONS scorched the visiting SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS 60-21 ### The EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY TIGERS folded, spindled and mutilated the NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE RANGERS by a score of 64-14 ### And the COLORADO MESA MAVERICKS crushed the homestanding FT LEWIS SKYHAWKS 42-0.
ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS made the visiting BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS their prison brides to the tune of 86-36 ### Meanwhile the MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS ran through the homestanding HASTINGS BRONCOS 61-35 ### And the top-ranked MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS handed a 62-27 smackdown to the DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS in their own house.
BOTH TEAMS WERE PLAYING BASKETBALL – The COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS CORSAIRS were on the road against the MENDOCINO COLLEGE EAGLES in a game where playing defense was apparently optional. At the end of the 1st Quarter the Corsairs led 21-7 but by halftime they held just a slender 34-33 advantage. 48-46 was the score in favor of C of R after 3 and by game’s end the Corsairs went home with a 69-66 victory.
HOMERS – Home teams pleasing their crowd with a victory included the MALONE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS, who won a 55-50 gridiron epic against the visiting LAKE ERIE COLLEGE STORM ### The UNIVERISTY OF NORTH ALABAMA LIONS found their old dominance returning in a 49-17 drubbing of the TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS ### And the ALBANY STATE GOLDEN RAMS won a 42-20 manhandling of the MOREHOUSE MAROON TIGERS.
VARYING DEGREES OF SLAUGHTER – The SANTA ANA COLLEGE DONS welcomed the ORANGE COAST PIRATES by pounding them to the tune of 38-16 ### The HARTNELL PANTHERS shut out the WEST VALLEY VIKINGS 51-0 ### The SCOTTSDALE FIGHTING ARTICHOKES de-pitted the PHOENIX BEARS 60-21 in their own house ### And the MODESTO COLLEGE PIRATES keelhauled the COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS GIANTS 76-32.
FORTY-TWO TO TWENTY-ONE – The GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS GUSTIES took it on the road and doubled-up on the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS 42-21 ### Meanwhile the NORWICH UNIVERSITY CADETS sent the MARITIME COLLEGE PRIVATEERS home nursing a loss by the same score ### And in another 42-21 affair the THOMAS MORE SAINTS drubbed the homestanding THIEL TOMCATS.
A TALE OF TWO TEAMS CALLED MUSKIES – The LAKELAND COLLEGE MUSKIES hosted the MARANATHA BAPTIST BIBLE CRUSADERS yesterday and annihilated them by a final score of 55-14 ### Meanwhile the MUSKINGUM UNIVERSITY MUSKIES let down their end of the Muskie alliance by losing on the road to the 20th ranked JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY BLUE STREAKS 41-9.
WIN IT BY FOURTEEN OR YOUR MONEY BACK! – The SHASTA COLLEGE KNIGHTS lead off this category with their 52-38 home win over the LOS MEDANOS MUSTANGS ### The NAVARRO COLLEGE BULLDOGS logged a 42-28 road victory over the BLINN COLLEGE BUCCANEERS ### And the MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COLLEGE BULLDOGS upset the visiting COPIAH-LINCOLN WOLFPACK by a score of 21-7.
