neumann_APNUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – In college hockey the unranked NEUMANN KNIGHTS came from behind on the road to topple the top-ranked and previously undefeated NORWICH CADETS in a 5-3 stunner. The Knights improve to 7-4-2 on the season while the Cadets now have a record of 11-1.   ###   It was a very tough day for the Top 8 teams yesterday. The number 3 OSWEGO STATE LAKERS fell to the 10th ranked UTICA PIONEERS in an unbelievable 6-0 laugher. At number 4 the EAU CLAIRE BLUGOLDS fell 2-1 in Overtime to the visiting CONCORDIA (MOORHEAD) COBBERS, the 7th ranked PLATTSBURGH STATE CARDINALS lost a road clash with the CASTLETON STATE SPARTANS by a score of 5-2 and the (8) MIDDLEBURY PANTHERS were bested in a 2-1 grudge match with the TRINITY (CT) BANTAMS.   ###   Outside the Top 10 the number 11 UW-SUPERIOR LAKERS were defeated 5-3 by the visiting CURRY COLONELS.

bowdoin polar bearsNEWSFLASH: SOME RANKED TEAMS ACTUALLY WON YESTERDAY – Along with all those upsets by the unranked over the ranked there were, of course, ranked hockey teams who took care of business yesterday. The 5th ranked defending champs, the ST NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS, doubled up on the ST OLAF OLES by a score of 6-3.   ###   At number 9 the BOWDOIN POLAR BEARS took it on the road and crushed the HAMILTON CONTINENTALS  6-2.   ###   The unlucky 13 AMHERST LORD JEFFS held serve against the COLBY WHITE MULES in an authoritative 3-0 victory.   ###   The (14) UMASS-BOSTON BEACONS smacked around the WENTWORTH LEOPARDS by a score of 5-2.   ###   … And the 15th ranked UNIVERSITY OF ST THOMAS TOMMIES outlasted the visiting BETHEL (MN) ROYALS  6-4.

UNE NoreastersCLASSICS ON ICE – The UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND NOR’EASTERS played a hard-hitting back and forth Instant Classic with the homestanding SUFFOLK RAMS and ultimately came out on top 5-4.   ###   The CONNECTICUT COLLEGE CAMELS likewise played Road Warriors and brought down the DARTMOUTH CORSAIRS in a 3-2 game for the ages.   ###   The SKIDMORE THOROUGHBREDS out of Saratoga Springs, NY, won a 4-3 epic against the visiting POTSDAM STATE BEARS.   ###   The GUSTAVAS ADOLPHUS GUSTIES invaded the realm of the ST SCHOLASTICA SAINTS and schooled them in a tight 3-2 matchup.    ###   … And the TUFTS JUMBOS prevailed over the visiting CANTON KANGAROOS in another 3-2 result. 

PrintTHE ICEHAWKS AND RAMS RULE THE WORLD – A pair of D3 hockey teams rose up and toppled D1 teams in yesterday’s play. The BECKER COLLEGE ICEHAWKS showed D1’s ASSUMPTION GREYHOUNDS how the good old hockey game is played in a 5-2 manhandling.   ###   The D3 FRAMINGHAM STATE RAMS took it on the road and won a scoreboard- exhausting 5-4 clash with the FRANKLIN PIERCE RAVENS.   ###   … And the BUFFALO STATE UNIVERSITY BENGALS earned a mention in this category with their 2-2 tie in Overtime against the D1 SAINT ANSELM HAWKS. 

Stout Blue DevilsWORKIN’ OVERTIME – In a pair of other Overtime hockey matchups yesterday the first one saw the STOUT BLUE DEVILS hosting the HAMLINE UNIVERSITY PIPERS (who I always say should go back to being called the Pied Pipers instead). In the extra period the Blue Devils emerged with a 5-4 victory.   ###   … And the NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE PILGRIMS played another team named Blue Devils in an Overtime affair. In this case they hailed the FREDONIA STATE BLUE DEVILS (Marx Brothers fans will get it) and fought them to a 2-2 tie in that additional period. The Pilgrims are now 4-6-2 with Fredonia notching their first tie of the season making them 4-9-1.

William Carey CrusadersTOP 25 BASKETBALL UPSETS – In NAIA basketball the (10) WILLIAM CAREY CRUSADERS toppled the (3) LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES in an 82-79 Instant Classic.   ###   The (7) WESTMINSTER GRIFFINS fell to the MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS  75-68   ###   The MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EVANGELS knocked off the 9th ranked ROGERS STATE HILLCATS by a score of 93-84.   ###   The LANGSTON LIONS rose up and overthrew the number 12 TEXAS WESLEYAN RAMS  74-65   ###   The BENEDICTINE RAVENS surprised the unlucky number 13 MIDAMERICA NAZARENE PIONEERS by a score of 67-60 in their own house   ###   The 14th ranked USAO DROVERS lost 76-70 at the (22) OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY STARS   ###   The SHAWNEE STATE BEARS tripped up the (20) CAMPBELLSVILLE TIGERS in an authoritative 80-65 win   ###   The unranked EMMANUEL COLLEGE LIONS notched a 59-57 road win over the number 21 FAULKNER EAGLES   ###   … And the 25th ranked SUNO KNIGHTS fell in Overtime to the PHILANDER SMITH COLLEGE PANTHERS by a score of 84-81.

texas college steers logoCENTURY CLUB – The (24) TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS continued their stellar season by racking up a 109-82 trouncing of the PAUL QUINN TIGERS   ###   OUR LADY OF THE LAKE UNIVERSITY SAINTS squeaked by the WILEY (TX) WILDCATS in a 101-100 shoot-out   ###   The LSU- SHREVEPORT PILOTS (riverboat pilots) smacked down the HUSTON- TILLOTSON RAMS  115-85   ###   The UNION (KY) BULLDOGS mauled the MONTREAT CAVALIERS by a score of 100-78   ###   … And the ST ANDREWS KNIGHTS fell to the TENNESSEE WESLEYAN COLLEGE BULLDOGS in a 113-79 manhandling.

Lincoln Christian University Red LionsHANGING TOUGH – The LINCOLN CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY RED LIONS haven’t gotten off to the start they would have preferred for their 2012-2013 basketball season. The Red Lions are sitting at 4-10 after Friday’s loss in the Cookson Hills Classic. With 11 games left in the regular season there is still ample opportunity to turn things around, however. The most recent victory for LCU came on the 3rd against the NEBRASKA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE PARSONS in a 72-53 road win. The Red Lions will next see action on the 10th as they host the Central Christian College of the Bible.
