March 8th, 1644 – Sir John Meldrum, just two days after beginning a siege of the crucial northern Royalist stronghold of Newark, gambles on an attempt to take the city by storm. With 5,000 men and 13 large cannon Meldrum stormed Newark but after fierce fighing was repulsed and settled back in to seige operations.
