BLUE DRAGONS TAKE DOWN PIRATES IN OVERTIME; FACE RED RAVENS IN SEMIFINALS

After playing one of the best halves of basketball this season, the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team persevered through one of its worst halves and advanced to the semifinals of the Region VI men’s basketball tournament with an 88-84 overtime victory over Independence in Saturday’s quarterfinals at Wichita State’s Charles Koch Arena.

The 25th-ranked Blue Dragons (26-6) move on to Sunday’s 7 p.m. semifinal against Jayhawk East champion Coffeyville (28-4). Hutchinson will play Coffeyville for the second-straight season in the Region VI semifinals. The Blue Dragons are appearing in the regional semifinals for the 34th time in program history. HCC will aim for its first championship game berth since 1997.
