NAIA FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS DOWN TO THEIR FINAL FOUR

The Sioux Falls Cougars rolled to a 27-7 victory over the McKendree Bearcats led by running back “Magic” Kristian Porter and by a Cougar D that  only  allowed  100 total yards for the  Bearcats.   Porter rushed for 108 yds and 3 touchdowns. Magic Kristian was named the Offensive Player of the Game and the Defensive Player was “Smilin'” Dan Schmeicher, who had 8 stops and a blocked punt. The Cougars continue their quest to threepeat as National Champions next Saturday by hosting the MNU Pioneers.

The CC Fighting Saints, like Sioux Falls a football dynasty in the NAIA, were hosting the Marian Knights, who were in their first trip to the NAIA quarterfinals. The Knights may be much-improved but talent and post-season experience told the tawdry tale as the Fighting Saints once again put the “Hell” in Helena, MT (Hey, a lame joke deserves a second chance) by crushing Marian 38-6.  Next Saturday the Fighting Saints host the St Xavier Cougars in semifinal action.

The Pioneers, believe it or not, actually trailed their quarter- final opponents, the  Morningside Mustangs 10-7 before scoring 27 unanswered points to win the game 34-10. The Pioneer defense made it a very, very long  afternoon for the formerly potent Mustang offense, causing them to suffer through stalled drive after stalled drive. Next Saturday the Pioneers will blaze a trail to Sioux Falls to take on USF in a semifinal matchup.

In what was easily the game of the day Saturday, the St Xavier Cougars  defeated the St Francis Cougars  by a deceptive final score of 40-21. This was a very tight game, with St Francis leading 21-20  in the 3rd quarter before the usual super- heroics of SXU quarterback Anthony “Crop- Man” Kropp  kicked in and Chicagoland’s Cougars pulled away for the win. Kropp threw for a school record 570 yds and 4 touchdowns, making him the Offensive Player of the Game. On the other side of the ball linebacker “Battlin'” Brendan Sheehy was the Defensive POG with 13 tackles, 3 hurries and a fumble recovery. SXU will be in Helena, MT next Saturday for their semifinal game against the CC Fighting Saints. If I may recommend a movie for Coach Fem on this road trip, how about Monster On The Campus?
