“PLAYOFFS!? YOU’RE TALKING PLAYOFFS?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?”

Jim Mora proving that sometimes a coach just has to lie to keep his team's respect.

As I love to point out, the College Football Divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog settle it on the field in the form of a playoff. Here’s a nice preview of this weekend’s semifinal games in the Jayhawk Conference.

HCC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College football team will play host to its first Region VI playoff game since 2004 when the seventh-ranked Blue Dragons will meet Independence in a semifinal matchup on Sunday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons haven’t played host to a playoff semifinal game since 1995 when HCC defeated Coffeyville 17-16 in overtime. HCC’s last playoff at home was a quarterfinal game against Highland, a 65-0 semifinal victory.

Region VI dropped the quarterfinal round of playoffs and cut the field to four teams before the 2006 season.

Hutchinson (8-1) will be the No. 2 seed in the four-team field. Independence (4-5) is the No. 3 seed, tying Coffeyville for third. The Pirates won the tie-breaker with the Red Ravens, defeating Coffeyville 14-10 in Week 8.

The Blue Dragons clinched their first playoff home game in six years and their highest Jayhawk Conference finish since 1995 with a resounding 41-0 victory over No. 14 Coffeyville on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

By virtue of losing the tie-breaker with Independence, Coffeyville slips to the fourth seed and will now travel to top-seeded and top-ranked Butler at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday in El Dorado.
