COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 12TH

North_Carolina-PembrokeUNC-PEMBROKE RULES THE WORLD – Just as various 1AA (FCS) college football teams manage upsets over 1A (FBS) teams the teams in NCAA Division 2 sometimes manage upsets over 1AA teams. Yesterday the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA-PEMBROKE BRAVES took it on the road against 1AA’s UNC-Charlotte Forty-Niners. The Braves more than doubled-up on their higher division opponents, winning a 45-22 upset smackdown!  

Oklahoma Baptist University helmetHISTORY FOR OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY – The NAIA’s OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON won the very FIRST football victory of this debut year for their restored program! They simultaneously embraced that NAIA tradition of defeating their rivals in NCAA Division 3, too. The Bison traveled to face Division 3’s SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PIRATES and stampeded them by a final score of 42-21! Congratulations, OBU!

Mayville State CometsTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The MAYVILLE STATE COMETS welcomed the 16th ranked VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS and defeated them in a 14-9 nailbiter   ###   Meanwhile the KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS notched a 22-14 road win over the number 17 LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS   ###   And the DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS toppled the 20th ranked DOANE TIGERS 31-20 in their own house.

Tarleton State Texans helmetTOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The number 25 TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY TEXANS played host to the 4th ranked team in the nation, the WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES, and upset them in a 31-27 Instant Classic   ###   The SLIPPERY ROCK ROCKETS crushed the number 7 IUP CRIMSON HAWKS by a score of 42-10   ###   And the FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS surprised the storied 24th ranked GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS 54-44.   

Washington and Jefferson PresidentsTOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 3 – The unranked WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE PRESIDENTS folded, spindled and mutilated the visiting number 23 THOMAS MORE SAINTS by a score of 45-21.   ###   … And in another upset of an unranked team over a ranked one the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN won a 14-7 game for the ages against the 24th ranked LYCOMING WARRIORS.  

St Francis (IN)WHEN RANKED TEAMS COLLIDE – In a case of Cougar on Cougar violence the (4) ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS routed the (10) ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS by a score of 45-20   ###   The (9) ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES won a 31-28 Instant Classic against the visiting (21) TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS   ###   And the (22) NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRAIRIE WOLVES fell on the road to the (15) CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS 19-3.

CSU-PuebloTHUNDERWOLVES … ARE … GOOOOOO! – The 5th ranked team in the nation, the COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY-PUEBLO THUNDERWOLVES, found themselves on the road against the number 17 CHADRON STATE COLLEGE EAGLES. The Thunderwolves went home with a 51-42 shootout victory in this affair which, along with the Tarleton State vs West Texas A&M game, were the only matchups between ranked teams in D2 yesterday.   

Fullerton College HornetsUPSET OF THE YEAR IN THE CCCAA? – The FULLERTON COLLEGE HORNETS battled the storied RIVERSIDE COLLEGE TIGERS yesterday in CCCAA action. Riverside is accustomed to dominating most of their competition but the Hornets fought them blow for blow. At Halftime the Tigers led the Hornets 22-18 but after a scoreless 3rd Quarter both teams exploded offensively in the 4th, with Fullerton College managing a tight 38-36 victory.

Georgetown (KY) TigersHAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The 12th ranked GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS celebrated an incredibly tight Homecoming triumph over their namesakes, the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS. The final score in this edge-of-your- seat game was 19-14   ###   And the SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEAGULLS eviscerated their Homecoming foes, the BUFFALO STATE BENGALS, by a score of 34-6.  

Belhaven College BlazersUNHAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The BELHAVEN COLLEGE BLAZERS burned down the Homecoming festivities for the BLUEFIELD RAMBLING RAMS, torching them 40-21   ###   The DAKOTA STATE TROJANS won a 31-28 Instant Classic against the JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES   ###   Meanwhile the PRESENTATION COLLEGE SAINTS crushed the HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY INDIANS 34-14   ###   and the (6) MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS pounded the GRACELAND YELLOW JACKETS by a score of 35-7.   

Amherst Lord JeffsTHE ULTIMATE WEEKEND FOR FANS OF THE LORD JEFFS – Yesterday the AMHERST COLLEGE LORD JEFFS were on the road against the COLBY COLLEGE WHITE MULES and defeated them in a gripping 14-10 affair   ###   And the only thing that Amherst fans find almost as enjoyable as a win by the Lord Jeffs is a loss by their archrivals the WILLIAMS COLLEGE EPHS (“Eephs”). Call it gridiron nirvana as Williams College lost at the MIDDLEBURY PANTHERS by a score of 21-14.      

Peru_St_NE_OLD3HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON? –  This time around the Marathon Game of the Week designation goes to the clash between the (19) PERU STATE BOBCATS and the homestanding MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS. The Pioneers were also among the teams whose Homecoming festivities were slightly soured by a gridiron loss as the Bobcats at last emerged with a 41-38 victory in DOUBLE OVERTIME.   

Hutchinson Blue DragonsBLUE DRAGONS GETTING BACK TO FORM – The HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS have spoiled their fans over the years to the point where a regular season loss or two seem like a catastrophe. At least if those losses come to anyone except Butler (KS). At any rate in a season which also saw schedule confusion because of the federal shutdown Hutch got back to normal with a 58-0 rout of the INDEPENDENCE PIRATES.

Southern_VirginiaOUR DIVISION CAN BEAT UP YOUR DIVISION – Every season Balladeer’s Blog chronicles the intense pigskin rivalry between NAIA college football teams and NCAA Division 3 college football teams. This week the divisions went .500 against each other. In addition to the aformentioned Oklahoma Baptist victory over Southwestern University D3’s SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS, the BYU of the East, defeated the NAIA’s visiting WARNER ROYALS by a score of 35-20.    

William Penn StatesmenIF ONLY CANCER ITSELF WAS THIS EASY TO DEFEAT! – The WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN welcomed the WALDORF COLLEGE WARRIORS yesterday in the Coaches vs Cancer Game. This is always a noteworthy event for a truly wonderful cause but the game itself was, unfortunately … less than competitive we’ll say. The Statesmen annihilated the Warriors by an unbelievable score of SIXTY-FIVE to NOTHING!  

Dordt_IADEFENDERS TRIUMPHANT – The DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS may want to start playing all their games on the road. The struggling team got their 2nd win of the year yesterday and, like the 1st, it came away from home. The Defenders decimated the TRINITY BIBLE COLLEGE LIONS 56-27   ###   Another team that at last logged victory # 2 for the season was the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS, who won a 20-14 nailbiter over the LU-BELLEVILLE LYNX.   

Bacone WarriorsUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NAIA – The BACONE COLLEGE WARRIORS notched a 16-9 road win over the WAYLAND BAPTIST PIONEERS   ###   Meanwhile the SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS improved to 3-3 with their 28-21 home win over the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES   ###  And the (25) ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS withstood a 28-25 invasion from the ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES.  

Shippensburg Red RaidersUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – D2 – The SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY RED RAIDERS played road warriors and edged the LOCK HAVEN BALD EAGLES 30-24   ###   The WEST LIBERTY UNIVERSITY HIPPTOPPERS overcame the homestanding FAIRMONT STATE FALCONS in a 27-21 gridiron epic   ###   And the UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS fell to the visiting WINONA STATE WARRIORS by a score of 45-40.

Mississippi_College_OLD1UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – D3 – The MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CHOCTAWS defeated the SUL ROSS STATE LOBOS 34-30 in their own house   ###   The OTTERBEIN CARDINALS eked out a 12-10 road victory over the MUSKINGUM MUSKIES   ###   Meanwhile the HAMLINE UNIVERSITY PIPERS logged a 31-28 road win over the ST OLAF OLES   ###   And the STEVENS POINT POINTERS snuck past the homestanding EAU CLAIRE BLUGOLDS 23-17.  

Monroe College Mustangs helmetUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NJCAA – The MONROE COLLEGE MUSTANGS took it on the road and defeated the HUDSON VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS in a 27-21 nailbiter   ###   The EASTERN ARIZONA COLLEGE GILA MONSTERS (love that name) won a 10-7 trip to face the PIMA COLLEGE AZTECS   ###   The DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS beat the visiting COFFEYVILLE RED RAVENS 32-27   ###   And the EAST CENTRAL WARRIORS held serve 36-31 against the MISSISSIPPI DELTA TROJANS.  

Mount San Antonio College MountiesUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – CCCAA – The MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES were at the GROSSMONT COLLEGE GRIFFINS in a battle of cool-named teams yesterday. The Mounties withstood a furious 2nd Half rally from the Griffins to eke out a 34-31 win   ###   And the ORANGE COAST PIRATES went into the 4th Quarter trailing the homestanding COLLEGE OF THE DESERT ROADRUNNERS 23-20 only to emerge with a 40-30 victory in the end.

Marian Knights helmet newWE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIEND – Yesterday the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS, the defending – but struggling – champions of NAIA college football, eked out a 27-23 road victory over the SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY SAINTS   ###   The MT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS, the champs of D3, dismembered the WILMINGTON QUAKERS 62-0   ###   And the NJCAA champions, the IOWA WESTERN REIVERS, crushed the homestanding IOWA CENTRAL TRITONS 59-7.

Huntingdon Hawks helmetHAWKS, BOTH REAL AND IMAGINARY  – The HUNTINGDON COLLEGE HAWKS led the homestanding GREENSBORO PRIDE 28-12 at Halftime but had to hold on against a furious comeback attempt in the 4th Quarter. The final score was Hawks 48  Pride 40   ###   And the (19) COE COLLEGE KOHAWKS were at the LORAS DUHAWKS for their annual battle. The Kohawks plucked all the feathers off the Duhawks by a score of FIFTY-SIX to NOTHING!

Northwestern College Red RaidersGO GOLD OR GO HOME – In yesterday’s Go Gold Game the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS were on the road against the BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS. Unlike the Coaches vs Cancer Game this event proved to be a fiercely fought, blow-for-blow gridiron Armageddon that left the attendees nearly as exhausted as the players. The Red Raiders left with a 24-17 victory.  

Illinois College Blue Boys helmetCOLORFUL TEAMS – The ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUE BOYS eviscerated the LAKE FOREST FORESTERS by an unbelievable score of 55-7   ###   Meanwhile the ST NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS survived a 20-17 home game against the CORNELL (IA) RAMS   ###   And the CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS incinerated the homestanding MONTCLAIR STATE RED HAWKS by a final score of 48-14.

Benedictine RavensOUTSTANDING DEFEAT OF A TEAM NAMED EAGLES – Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog are familiar with how bored I am with the enormous amount of college sports teams called Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs and Wildcats. This week’s winner of the distinction of a VERY memorable win over a team called Eagles are the (5) BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS. The Ravens made the AVILA EAGLES their prison brides by a score of 62-37.  

Crown Storm helmetWORKING OVERTIME – The CROWN COLLEGE STORM and the homestanding IOWA WESLEYAN COLLEGE TIGERS needed more than 4 Quarters to settle their differences yesterday. In the end the Storm emerged with a 34-21 victory in Overtime.   ###   And the COAHOMA COLLEGE TIGERS and the ITAWAMBA INDIANS went into Double Overtime before the Tigers won 47-41.

Langston LionsLION-HEARTED – The LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS traveled to take on the SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS and hammered them by a final score of 41-17.   ###   The MISSOURI SOUTHERN LIONS meanwhile won a much-closer 45-40 affair against the homestanding SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS   ###   And the TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE LIONS notched a 41-28 road win over the TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS.   

ASA CollegeAVENGERS: THE AGE OF VICTORIES – New York City’s ASA COLLEGE AVENGERS continue racking up the victories and making it look easy! Yesterday the Avengers kicked around the visiting LACKAWANNA COLLEGE FALCONS to the tune of 27-0.   ###   Another team that rolled to another win: the TYLER COLLEGE APACHES, who annihilated the CISCO COLLEGE WRANGLERS 49-0 in their own house.

Knox Prairie Fire helmetWIN IT BY TEN – The KNOX COLLEGE PRAIRIE FIRE were on the road against the BELOIT BUCCANEERS and handed them a 31-21 loss   ###   Meanwhile the SHAW BEARS notched a road win against the FAYETTEVILLE STATE BRONCOS by a score of 44-34   ###   And the WALSH UNIVERSITY CAVALIERS visited the MALONE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS, winning their clash 38-28.   

Bakersfield College RenegadesSHUTOUTS, INC – The BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES, the defending champions of CCCAA football, beat up on the visiting EL CAMINO COLLEGE WARRIORS in a 28-0 shutout.   ###   And in another case of defensive perfection out on the west coast the ALLAN HANCOCK COLLEGE BULLDOGS traveled to face the LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE SEAHAWKS and walked away with a 17-0 triumph of their own.

Thiel TomcatsDECIMATIONS – The THIEL COLLEGE TOMCATS managed a 30-3 trouncing of the visiting ST VINCENT BEARCATS   ###   The PACIFIC BOXERS knocked out the PUGET SOUND LOGGERS 56-14   ###   The CHAPMAN PANTHERS obliterated the POMONA-PITZER SAGEHENS 62-21 in their own house   ###   And the MONMOUTH (IL) FIGHTING SCOTS annihilated the GRINNELL PIONEERS 65-3.  

Golden West College RustlersBLOWOUTS AND BUTTKICKINGS – The GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS led the homestanding PASADENA LANCERS 24-10 at Halftime, then poured it on in the 2nd Half to win by a final score of 45-10.   ###   And the CHABOT COLLEGE GLADIATORS welcomed the CABRILLO COLLEGE SEAHAWKS to their Colliseum and sent them home reeling from an astonishing 64-24 manhandling.  

Tabor_KSBALLADEER’S BLOG DOES IT AGAIN – Just as Balladeer’s Blog correctly predicted the rise of Marian University football before anyone else I can pat myself on the back yet again! Yours truly accurately foretold the gridiron ascencion of the TABOR COLLEGE BLUEJAYS! The (14) Bluejays continued impressing yesterday by facing the visiting KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES and sending them home with a 54-28 loss.
