NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 3RD: NAIA, NJCAA, D3 AND D2

The Langston Lions Rule The World – The NAIA’s Langston Lions ( who I always say should change their name to the Langston Hugheses … my fellow poetry geeks will get it) upset a team from TWO divisions higher. The Lions took down Division 1AA’s Arkansas- Pine Bluff Golden Lions in a 19-12 game for the ages … Honorable mention goes to the NAIA’s Azusa Pacific Cougars who took 1AA’s San Diego Toreros down to the wire (after defeating them last season) in a heartbreaking 42-40 outcome.

The Franklin Grizzlies Also Rule The World – D3’s Franklin Grizzlies also brought down a team two divisions higher. The Grizzlies beat the 1AA Valaparaiso Crusaders 49-35 on Valpo’s own field.

Top 25 Upsets – NCAA Division 3 – There were no upsets in the NAIA’s or D2’s Top 25 so we’ll jump straight to D3. The 4th ranked North Central Cardinals fell to the unranked Redlands Bulldogs in a 35-29 nailbiter … At number 10, the Coe Kohawks were defeated by the 16th ranked Hardin- Simmons Cowboys in a 41-14 spanking that reflected the Cowboys’ disgruntlement with their pre-season ranking and the unranked Lycoming Warriors took down D3’s number 22 team, the Rowan Profs, who always seem to excel at falling short of their potential. This game ended with the odd score of 8-6.

Blue Dragons Crush Independence – The Hutchinson Blue Dragons moved to 2-0 with another easy victory. This time they eviscerated the Independence Pirates in a 70-0 laugher. Hutch now has their first Jayhawk Conference win of the year under their belt before they eat their first Labor Day hamburger. The Pirates, meanwhile, will need to scramble to recover some of the respect they earned last season following this debacle.

Golden Rams Continue Their Ownership Of Savannah State – D2’s Albany (GA) State Golden Rams (who I call the Fleeces for short) got their routine victory over Division 1’s Savannah State Tigers. The game was tighter than usual, though, with the Golden Rams’ Dirty Blue Defense and GoldRush O-Line earning them a 37-34 road win.

Here We Go Again – For the second week in a row the Tyler Apaches were involved in one of the closest and most hard- hitting games of the weekend, and once again they came out on top. This time they defeated the Kilgore College Rangers in an exhausting 34-31 classic.

Our Division Can Beat Up Your Division” Department – In the ongoing rivalry between the NAIA and NCAA Division 3 the NAIA’s Bethel (TN) Wildcats won a 26-21 Instant Classic against the Eau Claire Blugolds and the Trinity Bible College Lions dismembered D3’s Presentation Saints by a score of 39-13. D3’s victories over NAIA teams came in the form of the Louisiana College Wildcats’ TRIPLE OVERTIME win over the Belhaven Blazers in a 32-24 marathon and in the form of a few blowouts as the Salisbury Seagulls annihilated the Newport News Builders 42-3 and the Concordia- Moorhead Cobbers plucked the Dickinson State Blue Hawks (sorry, Coach Biesiot) 37-13.

Hasty Plate Of Soup – I love obscure historical references so I couldn’t resist that title for this segment. The Gate City Soup Bowl, an event you just KNEW Balladeer’s Blog would cover, was played yesterday and the Guilford Quakers used aggressive pacifism to manhandle the Greensboro Pride by a score of 27-7.

Blue Man Group – The Illinois College Blue Boys won on the road against the Millikin Big Blue in a 34-31 overtime showdown. This game defines the expression Instant Classic, leading us to our next category …

Under The Radar Instant Classics – The Mississippi College Choctaws won in overtime 33-27 over the Millsaps Majors … the Bethany Swedes emerged with a 29-21 win over the Southwest Assemblies of God Lions … the Mesabi Tech Norse fell to the Ridgewater Warriors 17-14 … the Heidelberg Student Princes needed OT to bring down the Alma Scots by a score of 34-28 and the Northwood Timberwolves defeated the Findlay Oilers in a 14-10 nailbiter.

Canada … Triumphant At Last – The Simon Fraser Clan (as in Scottish clan), one of the Canadian college teams that play in the USA’s lower divisions, got a win over an American team, but had to drop down still another division to do it. They defeated D3’s Pacific Boxers 36-28.
