“MOUNTAIN LION” RYAN NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.  —   University of Sioux Falls senior receiver Jon Ryan has been named the Victory Sports Network Offensive Player of the Year, as announced by the organization this morning.

Ryan is also the lone Cougar on VSN’s First Team All-America team. This season Ryan broke the NAIA record touchdown receptions in a single season, scoring 24 times on 81 receptions that went for 1,430 yards. The senior led USF with 102.1 receiving yards per game and 17.7 yards per reception. The Watertown native had a touchdown reception in 11 of 14 competitions this season, including eight multi-touchdown reception games.

Ryan became the fourth player in USF football history to be named the NAIA Player of the Year and represented the Cougars on the AFCA All-America team.

Ryan finished his career at USF second the career charts with 52 receiving touchdowns and 3,458 receiving yards and third with 199 receptions.

Defensive lineman Brandon Koolstra and linebacker Dominic Studzinski earned recognition on the VSN Second Team All-America team. The senior duo helped the Cougar defense to their third straight season in leading the NAIA in scoring defense, allowing an average of 8.5 points per game. The USF defense led the country in total defense, 206.1 yards per game, and pass defense, 113.1 yards per game.

Facing constant double-teams by opposing offensive lineman, Koolstra recorded 28.5 tackles and five tackles for a loss. Koolstra made 2.5 quarterback sacks with four quarterback hurries and one forced and one recovered fumble.

Studzinski finished second on the team with 63.5 tackles, eight tackles for a loss and 2.5 quarterback sacks. He had three pass break-ups, three pass deflections and a forced fumble.

Senior safety Dan Schmeichel, offensive lineman Kyle Wasson, quarterback Jon Eastman, kicker Braden Wieking and return specialist Adam Lopez received VSN All-America Honorable Mention.

This season USF compiled a 13-1 overall record on the way to their fifth straight appearance in the NAIA National Championship Game and fifth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship.
