KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 2010 National Championship trophy was awarded to Hastings (Neb.) after a 5-3 victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 4 in Orange Beach, Ala., from the Orange Beach Sportsplex. The Broncos out-scored their five National Championship opponents by a 21-4 margin, including three shutouts. Hastings became the 26th men’s soccer program to win the National Championship and the fifth different team to do so in as many years.
Besides earning their first-ever title in men’s soccer, the Broncos set four National Championship team records, including most tournament goals (21), assists (20), points (62) and a game-high mark for assists (9). All of these marks broke records that were set more than 20 years ago. Five Hastings players were selected to the All-Tournament team, including Defensive Player of the Tournament Derek Prinz and Offensive Player of the Tournament Jordan Green.
In 30 matches, there were 13 shutouts and six other games decided in overtime. There were several upsets early in the National Championship. In the Opening Round on Nov. 20, No. 2-seeded Simon Fraser (B.C.) was knocked out by unseeded Great Falls (Mont.) 1-0. In the Second Round on Nov. 29, No. 1-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio) was eliminated by Bethel (Tenn.), 2-1, in the first match at the National Championship final site. There were seven unseeded teams to defeat a seeded program, including Southern Poly State (Ga.) taking out defending national champion and No. 6-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 2-0, in the Opening Round.
The 2011 National Championship final site is scheduled for Nov. 28-Dec. 3 in Orange Beach, Ala.
