TOPEKA – One year ago, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team walked off the Hummer Sports Park turf with lost, devastated looks on their faces after its season abruptly came to an end.
The only expressions on the Lady Dragons’ faces on Sunday at were of complete jubilation and relief.
Freshman Alicia Robinson scored off a direct corner kick 5 minutes, 35 seconds into overtime to lift the third-ranked Lady Dragons to a 1-0 victory over Butler in the Region VI Tournament championship game.
The Lady Dragons (20-0), who won their second regional title in the program’s six-year history, advance to the NJCAA District B Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Laramie, Wyo. Hutchinson last won Region VI in 2007 as the sixth seed. Title No. 2 came as the tournament’s top seed.
Hutchinson is now 2-1 in Region VI championship games. … The Lady Dragons are 3-0 in three postseason meetings with Butler. This was the first championship game meeting with Butler. … HCC has won three in a row and four of the last five against the Grizzlies. Hutch has a 5-4 series advantage over Butler. … HCC is now 3-2-2 all time in overtime. … The 2010 Lady Dragons become the first time in program history to win 20 games in a season. … The Lady Dragons are now 11-4 all time in the Region VI Tournament.
