NEW CONFERENCE BEING FORMED IN NCAA DIVISION 3

Five of the Division 3 football schools that left the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference are joining three other schools in forming a new, as yet unnamed league. The five schools will also be leaving behind the automatic bid to the playoffs that the SCAC champ received each year. The eight institutions forming the core of this new conference are: Birmingham-Southern College Panthers, Centre Colonels, Hendrix Warriors, Millsaps Majors, Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, Rhodes Lynx and Sewanee Tigers.

I just wanted to say yours is the only sports stories I read. I like how you always give the team’s nickname not just the name of the school. It makes for more fun reading.

    • Thank you! I can’t believe the schools themselves don’t make a point out of using the colorful nicknames more often. In my e-mail exchanges with Sports Information Directors at the colleges I cover I always point out to them that a catchy nickname also HELPS PEOPLE REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE UNIVERSITY THE TEAM IS ASSOCIATED WITH! Just say Crimson Tide and even non-sports fans know you mean Alabama. SID’s and other sports bloggers seem to have an inexplicable aversion to using such a basic marketing technique.
