HAWKS TRIUMPHANT – The NAIA’s 17th-ranked LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES gave the top-ranked SHORTER HAWKS nearly all they could handle yesterday. The Flames took the Hawks into overtime but wound up losing to them 80-77 on their own court. The Hawks remain the only undefeated team in NAIA-1 basketball.
NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – Meanwhile, in the NAIA-2 ranks, the new number 1 team, the OREGON TECH HUSTLIN’ OWLS were upset on the road by the wild-eyed CONCORDIA (OR) CAVALIERS in an 81-66 manhandling.
NUMBER ONE SURVIVES A SCARE – The MIDDLEBURY PANTHERS, the number 1 team in the NCAA Division 3 rankings, survived a home scare against the 13th- ranked WILLIAMS EPHS in an 80-79 grudge match.
HEART OF A CHAMPION – The PIKEVILLE BEARS, NAIA-1’s defending champs, proved once again they still pack a potent punch, winning an Instant Classic against the LINDSEY- WILSON BLUE RAIDERS. The final score in this prizefight of a game was 71-70.
FORESTERS ARE AS OKAY AS LUMBERJACKS – The HUNTINGTON FORESTERS took it on the road against the 4th ranked GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS and came away with an 81-77 upset win.
NO, THAT’S NOT A TYPO – The AUGUSTANA (IL) VIKINGS plundered and pillaged the MILLIKIN BIG BLUE by an unbelievable score of NINETY- EIGHT to TWENTY- EIGHT!
RAVENS HOOPS COMES OUT ON TOP – The BENEDICTINE RAVENS won an overtime tussle with the EVANGEL CRUSADERS by a very tight score of 63-62.
UNSUNG CLASSIC OF THE DAY – This week’s game that wins this designation was the unrelentingly intense matchup between the POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS (one of the newest NAIA football teams, too) and the BLUEFIELD RAMS. The Skyhawks eked out an 81-80 victory in this eyeball-to- eyeball showdown that the spectators will be telling their grandchildren about.
V-HAWKS: A-OK – The VITERBO V-HAWKS had one of their more impressive home stands of the season by defeating the IOWA WESLEYAN TIGERS by a score of 71-56.
STEERED RIGHT – The TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS came out on top against the BACONE WARRIORS in a 77-62 game that had the Tyler, TX home crowd howling with delight.
ALL-NAME GAME OF THE WEEK – We have a tie in this category today. First, the SOUTHERN NAZARENE CRIMSON STORM defeated the LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS 68-64, and in a clash of two equally cool-named teams the BREWTON- PARKER BARONS fell to the SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC RUNNING HORNETS by a score of 79-76.
OVERTIME PAY – As always, 40 minutes wasn’t enough for some of yesterday’s clashes.
