THE TOP SIX COLLEGE FOOTBALL STADIUMS IN NCAA DIVISION 2

Yes, I know that technically the plural form of stadium would be “stadia” but I’m going with the more generally known form here. With this post I’ll be looking at some of the D2 football venues that I feel are that division’s equivalent of D1’s Big House or The Swamp.

Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem

6. BOWMAN-GRAY STADIUM

TEAM: WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS

COMMENT: This is sort of D2’s version of Ohio State’s stadium the Horseshoe, back when it really was a horseshoe.

5. MAXWELL FIELD

TEAM: WINONA STATE WARRIORS

COMMENT: Night games at Maxwell Field in the bracing Minnesota air epitomize college football.

West Texas A&M

West Texas A&M

4. KIMBROUGH MEMORIAL STADIUM

TEAM: WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES

COMMENT: Like the iconic stadium the Yale Bowl, Kimbrough Memorial Stadium is a classic in-ground bowl-shaped venue that nicely captures the spirit of college football’s historic lore. This may be the Lone Star Conference’s best.

3. THE REDWOOD BOWL

TEAM: HUMBOLDT STATE LUMBERJACKS

COMMENT: A perfectly picturesque stadium for a team with an enjoyable off-beat nickname. The intimate feel of the Redwood Bowl is legendary in D2 football.

The Jungle

The Jungle

2. THE JUNGLE

TEAM: PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS

COMMENT: What better name for the stadium of a team with an intimidating nickname like Gorillas? That’s a pic of the team’s mascot Gus the gorilla in the center of the field. “Welcome to the Jungle” appears over the stadium’s main entrance.

Lubbers Stadium

Lubbers Stadium

1. LUBBERS STADIUM

TEAM: GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS

COMMENT: When you consider how much of a dynasty Lakers football has been GVSU’s stadium deserves the top spot for embodying the feel of the Division 2 football playoffs.

I never heard of any of these teams but your blog is loaded with them. You’ve made a Division 2 fan out of me!

    • Great! I love bringing fresh eyes to the subjects I cover here.

      • WSU ALUM

Really cool! I’m a Winona State Alum, and I am happy to hear of the recognition. Maxwell Field has an atmosphere that no other in our conference has. However, of all the places I played in the NSIC, I have to say Augustana College in SD has the best stadium from a physical standpoint. If you can get to a game there I would highly suggest it! But the atmoshphere, no way, Winona has them beat!

      • Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I’m still wondering if Sioux Falls can support TWO D2 football teams.

  2. Benny

Wooo hoooo! Luv learning about these new teams! I’ll be following those Sunday recaps that I see you do every week during football season!

  3. Dennis I’ll say Pittsburg state Gorillas has the Best stadium in Div II with the largest scoreboard in div.II at 1.5 million in 2009 egual to alot of div I schools Will add seats in the furture to 11,000 Its pretty where the gorillas play with the most wins at 631 games

I think that with the new “Jungletron” which is bigger than almost all D1 schools. It should easily take the top spot away from Grand Valley… My high school stadium was more up to date than Grand Valley’s from personal experience… Yeah they have had great teams in the past but some how that never translated to thier stadium.. Grand Valley would be outside of my top 15 only taking into consideration the stadium and not the teams record.. List looks good otherwise… out of all the stadiums I have been to though Pitt States definately takes the cake.

Kimbrough is a great stadium. very steep banks of stands that put the loud and rowdy West Texas Buffalo fans right on top of the action.

Great place to watch a night game.
