BAD MOVIES: SON OF SVENGOOLIE STRIKES AGAIN

My fondness for bad movies is no secret and what would bad movies be without America’s movie hosts, those men and women who adopted funny/spooky personas to introduce them to us and make wry, sarcastic remarks about the schlockier ones, especially those superannuated flicks that were all some local channels could afford decades ago. My favorite has always been Chicago’s Rich Koz, better known as Son of Svengoolie and later, just plain Svengoolie. This blog is loaded with references to Rich Koz, the man I consider to be the Aristophanes (just to get pretentious for a moment) of movie hosts. Here are links to some bits about a man who deserves to be known by all bad movie lovers, if only because his influence has been the most extensive and his style the most imitated. Comedy was the key to Koz’s appeal. Here are links to two of his song parodies, to my tribute article about Son of Svengoolie, and to the PM Magazine television feature on Koz and his famous alter ego. Anyone who likes my bad movie reviews should love Sven!

First – Sven’s song parody – Godzilla’s Back (Sung to the tune of “my Boyfriend’s Back. The occassion was the 1985 release of the Godzilla remake, with Sven showing an old Godzilla flick and giving away tickets to the remake.   http://www.fuzzymemories.tv/index.php?c=196&m=

Second – Another song parody – Blob of Red (Sung to the tune of the Beach Boys song “Barbara Ann”. The occassion was a showing of Son of Blob. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKJBeBOo_TE

My tribute article – https://glitternight.com/2010/10/21/halloween-diversion-son-of-svengoolie/

The PM Magazine feature – just about 8 minutes, but the shortest 8 minutes of your life!    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZY4RL6i27s

Hey I saw the godzilla song before. Im have to say, I thought it was Weird AL and couldnt figure out why his name wasnt on it. Now I know.

I like the line, “Blog of red. It makes things dead.”

You know my brother recently visited me. He is on a ‘Angus Scrimm’ phase. You know, the Tall Man from phantasm?

Well my bro forced me to sit through a showing of Automatons. It was so terribly horrible. I thought it was a 50’s movie. Im in shock that is was a 2006 movie. Have you done a review for Automatons yet? Its very worthy of a Baladeer write up.

    • Yeah, I guess in his Sven gear he does look kind of like Weird Al or maybe like Zonker Harris from early Doonesbury.

I have GOT to see Automatons now. I’m going to look for it as soon as I’m done typring replies to today’s comments. Thank you for telling me about it!

Blog of red?! oops. That should say, Blob of red.

  3. Ha! I figured that was what you meant. We’ve all got blogs on the brain I guess.

  4. Cool post. I like the “Blob of Red” video when they show a close up of the woman’s arse poised for destruction above the recliner of blob death. Also, classic in that same video was the barber shop dude not even looking at the blob of goo in the sink and shoving the customers hair into it. Hysterical!

    • Glad you enjoyed it! I agree about the scene selection. “Sven” always did great editing for these song parodies, picking some of the funniest scenes from the flicks. The odd thing is I never got to see Son Of Svengoolie when it was on the air, but since I love Bad Movie Hosts I read a lot about them and got interested in him and thanks to Youtube there is a ton of video I’ve been able to watch on him and most of the other hosts.

  5. Sven rocks! He’s the man everybody after imitated!

Hey do any of you remember the song performed by Svengoolie called “Simply Reprehensible?” It was in a frankenstein episode I believe. I just love the song but can’t find it anywhere. 😦 Do any of you know where I could possibly find it? Thanks everyone. 🙂

  7. its superb as your other posts : D, regards for posting.

  8. I don’t usually comment but I gotta state regards for the post on this one : D.

Great post! This guy should tell Frank Coniff that he’ll never be as popular or as well liked as Sven.
